  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of media symbol variety on group performance in virtual teams. Symbol variety is defined as the number of ways in which information can be communicated and includes Daft and Lengel [1986]'s multiplicity of cues and language variety. According to media richness theory and media synchronicity theory, the use of media with high symbol variety is assumed to facilitate and promote communications among virtual team members. Therefore, it is expected that the media symbol variety is positively associated with group performance in virtual teams. Furthermore, online relationship building is expected to mediate the impacts of symbol variety on the performance. To confirm the suppositions, a controlled lab experiment was conducted with 60 undergraduate students as subjects. In the experimental virtual teams, subjects were allowed to communicate with other members using text-based messenger with emoticons. Subjects in the control virtual teams were allowed to communicate using only text-based messenger. The direct impact of symbol variety on group performance in virtual teams was found insignificant. However, the online relationship was found to completely mediate the positive impact of symbol variety on group performance. The implications and limitations of this study are also discussed for future research.

  • This paper describes the development and implementation for the SYMBOLGEN(SYMBOL GENerator) software. The SYMBOL-GEN software is for improving graphic processing speed and decreasing data communication load in ASC by genera ting and downloading off-line symbol file for HUD and MFD , which are the main display equipments in military aircraft. The SYMBOL-GEN is developed on PC using C++ language and MS Visual Studio 6.0 development tool. It is also designed to be modified and extended easily by introducing object-oriented software development technique.

  • As for the public, it is hard to understand semiotics because of the scope of an enormous semiotics education. This study is making semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce the subject. I thought that utilization can hold his semiotics study in a visual design field. First of all, this study considered design related papers related to the existing semiotics again and study found an error of the existing semiotics study and understanding did category concept with re-definition about semiotics of Peirce. Explained a symbol mark through understanding of semiotics of Peirce. This study was able to get the following conclusion through these results. 1) A symbol mark means one product, sonics, company oneself with a custom. Therefore, it is a rule symbol in the Representation side. 2) A symbol mark symbolizes an object with one symbol, so a symbol mark is a symbol in an object. 3) Because a symbol mark exists through a social rule, in semiotics definition of Peirce, this must become understanding with a Argument symbol. 4) A symbol mark is what a company or an organization field used from the past, and the public are recognizing this how. Therefore, it works as fact a company attaches a symbol mark to own product, and to show the public a symbol mark. A symbol mark is Dicent Sign in Interpretant. A rule and understanding about a lot of types which have various mutual relation, Peirce classification and understanding of a symbol mark tells to demand is holding that understanding a type of semiotics with the concept that is not an image to us.

  • In this thesis we propose symbol-based decoding for turbo codes which is used SOVA as a decoding algorithm. The proposed turbo codes that is interleaved on symbol-by-symbol basis and inputted as n-bit symbols to the decoder. This method makes that the stages of the original trellis are merged together and the trellis depth is reduced by 1/n. We research turbo codes with symbol size n=2 in this paper and its performance.

  • This paper proposes a new concept of a signal constellation of the recently introduced half-symbol-rate-carrier phase-shift keying (HSRC-PSK) modulations for bandwidth-efficient high speed data communications. Since the HSRC-PSK modulations contain different symbol energies representing the same bit sequences due to the loss of orthogonality of their HSRC signals, it is very hard to represent the symbol using the conventional signal constellation. To resolve the problem, two different energies are assigned to represent one symbol for the HSRC offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) modulation. Similarly, the different energies exist to display the different symbol for HSRC minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation. With the proposed signal space representation, HSRC-PSK symbol can easily be shown with a two-dimensional scatter plot which provides helpful information of evaluating HSRC-PSK signal's quality.

  • This paper presents and compares several techniques that detect the symbol rate of unknown received signal. Symbol rate is detected from the power spectral density of the circuits such as the delay and multiplier circuit, the square law circuit, and analytic signal, etc. As a result of discrete Fourier transform of the output signals of these circuits, a lot of spectral lines and some peaks appear in frequency domain and the position of first peak is corresponding to the symbol rate. If a spectral line on the frequency that is not located in symbol rate is larger than the first peak, the symbol rate is erroneously detected. Thus, the ratio between the value of first peak and the highest side spectral line is used for the measure of the performance of symbol rate detector. For the MPSK modulation, the analytic signal method shows better performance than the delay and multiplier and square law circuits when the received signal power is lager than -20dB. It is also noted that the delay and multiplier circuit is not able to detect the symbol rate for the QAM modulation.

  • Since the research of advanced terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting system is still in progress, and in our previous paper, in which we introduced how to combine one conventional transmitted symbol with two additional bits to form a new symbol transmission, the bit error performance of LP bits is not realizable, because even we implemented the turbo code to protect the LP bits transmission, to obtain a certain good bit error probability, the value of $E_b/N_0$ cost highly. In this paper, we modified the composition of low-priority symbol and high-priority symbol, and through the system presented in previous paper we get a better simulation result of the LP symbol transmission.

  • In this paper, it is called nonlinear-symbol CPFSK(NCPFSK) which is modulated by the nonlinear function of information carrying phase function within all symbol interval produce time invariant trellis structure. In general, the bit error probability performance of CPFSK modultion scheme within given signal constellation is determined from the number of memory elementsof continuous phase encoder, i.e. number of state. In this paper the number of state of analyticall designed NCPFSK is time invariant. And the nonlinear symbol mapping function of the proposed moudlation produces the nonlinear symbol andthe phase state of the modulation for updating the phase function of NCPFSK. It si shown in this paper nonlinear symbol CPFSK with multiple TCM to make further improvements in d$^{2}$, and analyzed BER performance in AWGN channel envioronments.hannel envioronments.

  • ELF, an abbreviation for Executable and Linkable Format, is the basic file format for shared libraries and executable files used in the Linux system, whereas 'Linker' copies the symbol information of static shared libraries into the symbol table in the target file generated by way of static linking. At this time, the symbol table keeps various pieces of debugging-related information including function names provided by the shared libraries, and it can be deleted to avoid debugging for security reasons by utilizing the fact that it does not directly affect the program execution. This paper proposes a method for restoring the symbol information of static shared libraries from the ELF object file in which the symbol table is deleted, and confirms that the symbol information is restored by conducting practical experiments.

  • In spatial modulation (SM), both the signal symbol and spatial symbol, i.e., the index of the antenna from which signal symbol is transmitted, carry information. To increase the number of bits carried by spatial symbols, more transmit antennas are required. In the generalized SM (GSM), the same signal symbol is transmitted from a combination of antennas, resulting in a reduction in the number of antennas required to achieve a given spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose a rotated-symbol GSM (RGSM), in which the signal symbol is rotated with an angle corresponding to the position of the antenna index within the combination. This increases the number of spatial symbols by a factor equivalent to the length of the antenna combinations of the GSM. Numerically, SM, GSM and RGSM require 128, 17 and 12 transmit antennas to convey seven bits through the spatial symbols. Simulation results show that RGSM performs relatively close to GSM, and in several system settings, their error performances coincide.
