A Study of first-line nurse manager's self-efficacy (일선 간호관리자의 자기 효능감에 관한 연구)

  • In human societies, there are various organizations which are unique and have different roles. Among them, hospital organization are much more complex than other organizations because of their multitude of professional groups each with its own goals. To achieve its purposes, hospital should manage each professional group effectively. Hospital nursing organizations are the core positions in hospitals for patient care. Therefore nursing organizations have have efficient nurse managers to lead nurses for their own purposes. First- line nurse managers have special tasks for patients and nurses, which include to motivating, managing communicating with the people. So they should have high self-efficacy, which is the belief that one can successfully perform the behaviors in question. Self-Efficacy of first line nurse managers that asked them for leading their staff, and their tasks, is essential to bring about self-realization of staff nurses through motivation and job satisfaction, taking advantage of sound surrounding which is able to operate her staff nurses in order to function efficiently. But there were few studies on the topic in a hospital setting. This study was designed to measure first-line nurse managers' self-efficacy. The subjects for this Study were 167 first-line nurse managers randomly selected from 18 university hospitals in Korea. The Self-Efficacy was measured using 'The general self-efficacy scale' developed by Sherer and Maddux(1982). The data were collected through questionnaires and analysed using SAS program, frequencies, percentages and Pearson' correlation coefficients. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The average of first- line nurse managers' self- efficacy was 66.7. 2. The correlation between first-line nurse managers' self- efficacy and general characteristics(age, education, career) was not significant. From the above findings, this study can suggest the following : 1. Repeat studies are needed in various hospital settings. 2. First-line nurse managers must be trained with special programs for each nursing organizations' purposes.

A study on the Effect of Self-Efficacy on Stress-Coping methods of Health department and Non-health department university students (보건계열과 비보건계열 대학생의 자기효능감이 스트레스 대처 방식에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study is designed to examine the effect of self-efficacy on stress-coping methods of health related and non-health related department college students. Method: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 533 students (268 health department and 265 non-health department) of health department and non-health department students at 1 university and 2 university in Gyeonggi-do, jeollabuk-do and jeollanam-do. Results: The results were statistically analyzed using SPSS 12.0, which made no statistically-significant difference among health and non-health students. The study on the effect of self-efficacy on stress-coping methods has revealed that both health and non-health department students showed statistically-significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and emotion-centered coping methods. Also, Social efficacy had negative correlation with social-supported coping methods. While non-health department students had statistically-significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and wishful coping. Conclusion: Accordingly, it has been revealed that self-efficacy is effective in stress-coping methods.

The effects of self-esteem on job-seeking efficacy of dental hygiene students (치위생과 학생들의 자아존중감이 구직효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the self-esteem and job-seeking efficacy of dental hygiene students in an attempt to provide some information on career guidance, counseling and the development of employment programs by colleges, as self-esteem seemed to be one of integral variables to affect job-seeking efficacy. Methods : The subjects in this study were the dental hygiene students in three different colleges in South and North Jeolla Provinces. After a self-administered survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 562 respondents were analyzed by the SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 12.0. Results : 1. The students investigated got a mean of 2.43 in self-esteem, which was not a high score. The sophomores had a better self-esteem than the freshmen and juniors, and the gaps among the respondents in each subfactor of self-esteem were significant($p^*$ <0.01, $p^{**}$ <0.05). 2. The students got a mean of 3.12 in overall job-seeking efficacy, and there were significant differences among them in each subfactor of job-seeking efficacy($p^*$ <0.01). 3. The freshmen were ahead of the sophomores and juniors in job-seeking efficacy, and the gaps between the former and the latter were significant($p^*$ <0.01). 4. There was a significant relationship between the self-perceived self-esteem and job-seeking efficacy of the students. A higher self-esteem led to a better job-seeking efficacy(p<0.01). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings illustrated that a higher self-esteem had a more positive effect on job-seeking efficacy. Therefore the development of programs geared toward boosting the self-esteem of dental hygiene students is required, and educational institutions should provide quality self-esteem programs for students to plan and prepare for their future, to make the right career choice, to improve their vocational adjustment, to keep pursuing self-development and to build the right values.

Professional Self-Concept and Self-Efficacy according to the Need for Advanced Practice Nurse among Korean Nurses (전문간호사 요구에 따른 간호사의 자기효능감 전문직 자아개념)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the need for advanced practice nurse and explain the relationship between self-efficacy and professional self-concept among Korean nurses. Method: The participants were 511 Korean nurses who were recruited in hospitals or public health centers in Korea. The instruments used in this study were Sherer et al's self-efficacy instrument, Arthur's professional self-concept instrument, and a structured questionnaire on the need for advanced nurse practitioners. Cronbach alpha, mean, SD, $X^2$, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data using SPSS PC+ ver 12.0 for Windows. Results: Of the nurses, 57.9% of wanted to be advanced practice nurses. The mean of professional self-concept and self-efficacy scores for the nurses were at the medium level. Professional self-concept and self-efficacy of nurses showed significant differences according to age, working location, marital status, level of education, and length of clinical experience. A significant positive correlation was found between professional self-concept and self-efficacy. Conclusion: Before planning to develop the role of Advanced practice nurse, there is a need to measure self-efficacy and professional self-concept among nurses. Politically, strategies to increase self-efficacy and professional self-concept among Korean nurses will be necessary in order to prepare good advanced practice nurse.

A Study on Perceived Self-efficacy in Non-insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (제 2형 당뇨병환자의 자기효능에 관한 연구)

  • This study was designed to identify the degree of perceived self-efficacy and self-esteem in non - insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The 278 Diabetic patients participating in this study were selected from a diabetic clinic. The period of data collection was September 2 to September 10, 1996. Collected data were analyzed by means of Frequency, Mean, SD, t - test, Pearson correlation, ANOVA using SPSS/PC+. The result are summarized as follows: 1. The mean score of perceived self-efficacy were 3.52 in total, 3.91 for medication, 3.40 for exercise, 3.60 for diet control, 3.18 for glucose test, 3.53 for general management. And the mean score of self-esteem were 3.51 2. Perceived self-efficacy and self-esteem had statistically significant positive correlations (r=.3125, p=.001). 3. The results of testing for the degree of perceived self -efficacy, according to the subject's demographic variables, showed that there were significant differences in sex (t=4.14, p<0.001), the level of education(t=6.24, p<0.01) and diabetic education(t=3.25, p<0.05). These results suggest that perceived self-efficacy and self-esteem is an important variable in the compliance of diabetic patients.

  • Under the new media environment this study is designed to investigate how the concept, 'self-efficacy' would be applied in an advertising context. The current study reviews consumer-controlled media environment, consumers' various attitude toward advertising and strategies for coping for advertising. In addition, how self-efficacy has been defined and applied in politics, education, and the Internet was discussed. From the advertising perspective it is interesting to examine how self-efficacy would be defined and applied in the consumers' attitude toward advertising. Lastly, this study will examine effects of self-efficacy on advertising research and advertising industry. For further study on self-efficacy much research needs to be conducted, focusing on conceptual and operational definition. Specifically, scale development and validation tests of 'self-efficacy' should be preceded.

The association between oral health behavior intention and self-efficacy of dental hygiene students (일부 치위생과 학생들의 자기효능감과 구강보건행동 실천의지의 연관성)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide basic data to develop health education program, by analyzing the relationship between the oral health behavior intention and self-efficacy in dental hygiene students. Methods : This research was based on self administrated survey conducted by 348 dental hygiene students. The survey was composed of five items of general characteristics, ten items of factor in self-efficacy and seven items of factor in oral health behavior intention. Results : According to general characteristics, students with high grades had higher oral health behavior intention(p<0.05) and students answered that the significance of oral health is very important had higher oral health behavior intention(p<0.05). The level of self-efficacy was separated by high-level(30%), medium-level(40%), and low-level (30%), and the higher self-efficacy was, the higher oral health behavior intention was. Conclusions : By improving dental hygiene student's self-efficacy, it was necessary to promote oral health behavior intention.

The Effect of BSE Education with Practice on Knowledge, Self-Efficacy and Performance in Middle-Aged Women (중년여성의 유방자가검진 교육이 유방자가검진 지식, 자기효능감 및 수행에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: Breast cancer is a common cancer in women in Korea. Early detection of breast cancer is very important for the protection of a woman's health. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effect of BSE education on knowledge, self efficacy and performance in middle-aged women. Method: The participants were 33 women who agreed to participate in the study. They responded to a questionnaire that included items on knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE. The experimental group was given a 90 minute-session including a lecture and practice with a BSE practice model and their own body. Their knowledge of the BSE was measured using Choi's tool and self-efficacy was measured using the scale by Champion and Scott. Results: Homogeneity for knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE between the experimental and the control groups was confirmed. After 3 months of BSE education, knowledge, self-efficacy and frequency of BSE performance in the experimental group were significantly higher than for the women in the control group. Conclusion: A BSE education program would be helpful to enhance health behavior by early detection of breast cancer in middle-age women.

Depression, Self-efficacy and Coping in Patients with Cancer (암환자의 우울, 자기효능 및 대처간의 상관관계)

  • The relationships among self efficacy, depression and coping with cancer were examined in 194 outpatients who had received a diagnosis of cancer. The sample for this descriptive correlational study consisted of people who were at least 19 years old and had been treated for cancer at 6 hospital in Seoul. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. The results of this study are as follows: 1. People who attributed cancer to heredity/family showed the highest mean score of self efficacy. People who attributed cancer to smoking showed the highest mean score of depression. and coping. 2. There were significant differences between causal attribution and depression and between causal attribution and coping. 3. There was a negative correlation between self-efficacy and depression(r=-.301, p= .000), whereas there was a positive correlation between self-efficacy and coping (r=.195, 0=.006). Finally, it is evident that identifying clear perceived causes, self-efficacy, depression and coping in patients with cancer continues to challenge researchers. Based upon this study, it is recommended that future research have a longitudinal design that allows for the identification of changes in perception, emotion and coping and, possibly, different relationships over time.

Mediation effects of social support and self-efficacy between academic stress and college adjustment in physical therapy students (물리치료학과 학생의 학업스트레스와 대학생활적응의 관계에서 사회적 지지와 자아탄력성의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the mediating effects of social support and self-efficacy between academic stress and college adjustment in physical therapy students. Design: Survey. Methods: 75 subjects were surveyed about the level of academic, Academic Stress, College Adjustment, Social Support, Self-Efficacy, and self-control. To confirm the cognitive function on brain activity were evaluated. Results: First, College students have higher academic stress and lower college adjustment. Higher social support and self-efficacy have lower academic stress and better college adjustment. Second, students with high academic stress need constant attention to increase their social support and programs to reduce academic stress. Third, students with high academic stress, low social support, and low self-efficacy can increase their cognitive strength through the brain wave thereby reducing the academic stress they are currently feeling. Conclusion: In order to improve the College Adjustment, it is considered that it is important to increase the cognitive function through brain train along with the development of a student management program that can reduce academic stress and increase social support and self-efficacy.
