  • To study properties of the variation of the infrared emission of OH/IR stars, we collect and analyze the infrared observational data in K band for nine OH/IR stars. We use the observational data obtained for about three decades including recent data from the two micron all sky survey (2MASS) and the deep near infrared survey of the southern sky (DENIS). We use Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm to determine the pulsation period and amplitude for each star and compare them with previous results of infrared and radio investigations.

  • Two different types of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques were employed to investigate the tensile behavior of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Two NDE methods, ultrasonic testing (UT) and infrared (IR) thermography, were used to assess defects and/or damage evolution before and during mechanical testing. Prior to tensile testing, a UTC-scan and a xenon flash method were performed to obtain initial defect information in light of UT C-scans and thermal diffusivity maps, respectively. An IR camera was used for in-situ monitoring of progressive damages. The IR camera measured temperature changes during tensile testing. This paper has presented the feasibility of using NDE techniques to interpret structural performance of CMCs.

  • $Ir(dpq/dpqx)_2$(przl-R) complexes were prepared and their electrochemical properties were investigated, where dpq, dpqx and przl-R represent 2,3-diphenylquinoline, 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline and N-phenyl-R-pyrazolonate derivatives, respectively. The iridium complexes containing dpq and dpqx as main ligands were reported to show red phosphorescence, and involvement of a pyrazolonate ancillary ligand in the iridium complexes led to high luminous efficiency for organic light-emitting diodes. In this study, we synthesized red phosphorescent iridium complexes containing a new pyrazolonate ancillary ligand and investigated the HOMOs, LUMOs and resulting electrochemical gaps of $Ir(dpq/dpqx)_2$(przl-R) by cyclic voltammetry. The emission wavelengths of the complexes at 600 - 640 nm were consistent with the gaps of 1.95 - 2.03 eV measured from reduction and oxidation potentials of the complexes.

  • Metamaterials are artificial media that can control the properties of waves at will. Active photonic metadevice technologies cover the device and material technologies that control the visible and IR light through an external signal (mainly an electrical signal). The application areas of active photonic metadevices are tremendous for example holography, active HOE, bio imaging, IR imaging, telecommunication, and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, the technical trends and prospects of active metamaterials, active meta holography, active meta devices, nano-optical telecommunication devices, and IR imaging meta devices are reviewed.

  • The shape of a galaxy's spectral energy distribution ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR) wavelengths provides crucial information about the underlying stellar populations, metal contents, and star-formation history. Therefore, analysis of the SED is the main means through which astronomers study distant galaxies. However, interstellar dust absorbs and scatters UV and optical light, re-emitting the absorbed energy in the mid-IR and Far-IR. I present the updated 3D Monte-Carlo radaitive transfer code MoCafe to compute the radiative transfer of stellar, dust emission through a dusty medium. The code calculates the emission expected from dust not only in pure thermal equilibrium state but also in non-thermal equilibrium state. The stochastic heating of very small dust grains and/or PAHs is calculated by solving the transition probability matrix equation between different vibrational, internal energy states. The calculation of stochastic heating is computationally expensive. A pilot study of radiative transfer models of SEDs in clumpy (turbulent), galactic environments, which has been successfully used to understand the Calzetti attenuation curves in Seon & Draine (2016), is also presented.

  • This study conducted a measurement method of high temeprature conditions using infrared termography. All objects emit infrared light, and this emissivity has a significant impact on the temperature measurements of infrared thermal imaging (IR) cameras. In order to measure the temperature more accurately with the IR camera, correction equations were derived by measuring the emissivity according to the temperature change of combustible metals in a high-temperature environment. Two combustible metals, Mg and Al, were used to measure emissivity with changing temperature. Each metal was heated, the emissivity was measured by comparing the temperature with IR camera and thermocouples so that the correlation between temperature and emissivity could be anslyzed. As a result of the experiment, the emissivity of the metals increases as the temperature increased. This can be interpreted as a result of increased radiation emission as the thermal movement of internal metal molecules increased.

  • We have developed low voltage driving red phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices using a new electron transport layer. $Ir(piq)_3$ and CBP were used as a phosphorescent dopant and an emission host, respectively. The device exhibits a luminance of $1000\;cd/m^2$ at a voltage of 2.8 V. This high luminance at low voltage results from a high electron conduction behavior of the new electron transport layer.

  • In the past, making IR photography needed somewhat complicated process, so its application fields were limited. However, it has become easy to make IR photography with advanced digital technology, so it is expected that the fields of IR photography and existing limit due to difficult making process will be expanded. Therefore, in this study, it is decided that the need of IR standard chart which allows us to manage exposure and tone of IR photography for scientific purpose will increase. Two methods were used to make IR standard chart. First method is to use aluminum. When aluminum has oxide coating through anodic oxidation, it has high durability, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Also, IR reflectance of aluminum can be controlled in some degree depending on the thickness of oxide coating. Second method is to use pigments. Yellow 10P150 pigment is used for the brightest patch. This pigment is appropriate in this study due to high heat resistance and IR reflectance. Carbon black is used for the darkest patch. Carbon black absorbs much IR, and its color is not faded by any source of light. IR reflectance is adjusted elaborately by mixing two pigments. Finally, 6 patches are selected with consideration for actual IR reflectance of patches. As a result, IR reflectance of random subjects can be known approximately and IR photographs can have appropriate contrast with the IR standard chart.

  • Amber has been used as gemstones and artifacts from the period of the Three Kingdoms or earlier, which are discovered in the process of excavation now. It is, however, very difficult to discuss the importing route and circulation of amber because there are no informations available on the provenance. In this study, we acquired the IR spectra of ambers originating from 5 different locations. We also monitored the change of characteristic IR peaks by artificially aging the ambers under heat, light and heat with oxygen, respectively. As the aging proceeded, the intensity of C=O band and O-H band increased, however, the bands related with C=C bond decreased. There needed some modifications in the discerning scheme because some peak disappeared with aging; yet, it was still possible to discern different ambers largely. Therefore, it is expected that the scheme can be used practically by appraising its applicability to the real amber relics excavated.
