A Study on the Insulation Performance Improvement of Induction Motors Fed by IGBT PWM Inverter (IGBT PWM 인버터 구동 유도전동기의 절연성능 향상기술 연구)

  • The recent advancements in power electronic switching devices have enabled high frequency switching operation and have improved the performance of pulse-width modulated (PWM) inverters for driving induction motors. But, the insulation failures of stator winding have attracted much concern due to high dv/dt of IGBT PWM inverter. In this paper, the test results for evaluation on the stator winding insulation of low-voltage induction motors for IGBT PWM inverter applications are presented. The insulation characteristics are analyzed with partial discharge and dissipation factor tests. Also, insulation breakdown tests by switching pulse voltage are performed. An effective insulation technique to enhance the insulation strength is suggested from the test results.

  • this paper a new PAM-PWM Inverter using IGBT Is described. The output waveforms in the proposed PAM-PWM inverter are investigated both theoretiically and experimentally. The line-voltage waveform is composed of fundamental component and the sidebands of carrier frequency. The lower order harmonics are not included In the output waveform. As each inverter arm does not operate during two-thirds period, the heats, generated in the devices are reduced. That is the size of the inverter system can be minimized because of the reduction In the heat dissipating equipemnt.

  • This paper describes distribution characteristics of switching surge voltage in stator windings of induction motor driven by IGBT PWM inverter. To analyze the voltage distribution between the turns and coils of stator winding, equivalent circuit model of induction motor including cable was proposed and high frequency parameter is computed by using finite-element method (FEM). From the electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation of the whole system for induction motor, feeder cable, and PWM inverter, the variable effect on rising time of the inverter, cable length, and switching frequency on the voltage distribution is also presented. In order to experiment, an induction motor, 380[V], 50[HP], with taps from one phase are built to consider the voltage distribution so that these results can be helpful when filter was designed to remove high dv/dt.

  • The high rate of voltage rise (dv/dt) in motor terminals caused by high-frequency switching and impedance mismatches between inverter and motor are known as the primary causes of irregular voltage distributions and insulation breakdowns on stator windings in IGBT PWM inverter-driven induction motors. In this paper, voltage distributions in the stator windings of an induction motor driven by an IGBT PWM inverter are studied. To analyze the irregular voltages of stator windings, high frequency parameters are derived from the finite element (FE) analysis of stator slots. An equivalent circuit composed of distributed capacitances, inductance, and resistance is derived from these parameters. This equivalent circuit is then used for simulation in order to predict the voltage distributions among the turns and coils. The effects of various rising times in motor terminal voltages and cable lengths on the stator voltage distribution are also presented. For a comparison with simulations, an induction motor with taps in the stator turns was made and driven by a variable-rising time switching surge generator. The test results are shown.

  • This paper presents a novel prototype of three-phase voltage source type zero voltage soft-switching inverter with the auxiliary resonant snubbers suitable for high-power applications with IGBT power module packages in order to reduce their switching power losses as well as electromagnetic conductive and radiative noises. A proposed single inductor-assisted resonant AC link snubber circuit topology as one of some auxiliary resonant commutation snubbers developed previously to achieve the zero voltage soft-switching (ZVS) for the three-phase voltage source type sinewave PWM inverter operating under the instantaneous space voltage vector modulation is originally demonstrated as compared with the other types of resonant AC link snubber circuit topologies. In addition to this, its operation principle and unique features are described in this paper. Furthermore, the practical basic operating performances of the new conceptual instantaneous space voltage vector modulation resonant AC link snubber-assisted three-phase voltage source type soft-switching PWM inverter using IGBT power module packages are evaluated and discussed on the basis of switching voltage and current waveforms, output line to line voltage quality, power loss analysis, actual power conversion efficiency and electromagnetic conductive and radiative noises from an experimental point of view, comparing with those of conventional three-phase voltage source hard-switching PWM inverter using IGBT power modules.

  • The low-voltage induction motors have been widely driven by IGBT PWM inverters, ever since it was used to apply variable speed drives. Recently, the insulation failures of the stator windings become critical problems due to the high ratio of dv/dt in IGBT PWM inverters. In this paper, the detailed insulation tests on the IGBT PWM inverter fed induction motor are carried out. Five different types of insulation techniques are used to ti induction motors. The change of the insulation characteristics such as partial discharge, AC current, capacitance, and dissipation factor are compared. respectively In addition, insulation breakdown tests using the high voltage pulse are performed, and corresponding breakdown voltages are analyzed.

  • 철도용 전동기는 작은 크기와 중량에 비해 큰 추진력(토크)을 필요로 하지만, 전철의 입력전원 시스템의 특유한 성질로 입력전압이 주기적으로 부족하다. 따라서 전압이용률을 최대화할 수 있는 과변조 PWM이 필요하다. 또 철도용 IGBT 인버터의 스위칭 주파수는 기존의 GTO인버터보다 2배 이상 크므로 철도용 IGBT 인버터 전용의 새로운 동기화 전략이 필요하다. 본 논문은 'Min/Max PWM'을 과변조 영역으로 선형 확장하는 과변조 PWM기법과 최적 동기화법을 혼합한 철도용 IGBT 인버터를 위한 최적 PWM 전략을 제안한다. 전동기-관성부하 모델을 대상으로 시뮬레이션한 결과와 축소모델 실험 결과는 본 전략이 타당함을 보여준다.

  • HEP(Head Electric Power) system, supplying 3-phase service power to the coach vehicles, is a kind of special auxiliary power equipment which is boarded on 8200 series electric locomotives in KORAIL. This equipment shares high voltage DC link with a main propulsion converter/inverter systems. It was difficult to use high frequency PWM technique so that GTO has been used as a power device same like the main power system. Due to low PWM frequency(300Hz) of HEP inverter, the output voltage has less power quality comparing to normal SIV(Static Inverter) system. In this paper, an optimal PWM strategy is presented for new IGBT type HEP inverter system. Several PWM techniques were investigated to improve output voltage quality under fixed lower filter inductance and not high PWM frequency. Finally PC simulations have been done to clarify its availability.

  • In this paper, the IGBT VVVF inverter for 1C4M propulsion system of railway traction is studied. The inverter is consisted of IGBT stacks, a DB unit, and a control unit. The test results of the combined system is given, which shows an excellent performance of the overall system.
