  • We observe simultaneous transmission of relay stations (RSs) allowed in current IEEE 802.16j draft standard for multi-hop relay networks may involve severe interference among the RSs, hence leading to throughput degradation. Allowing only 1/3 of the RSs to simultaneously transmit instead of 1/2 RSs as in the current draft standard reduces the interference but results in reduced throughput. To remedy this problem, we devise schemes to incorporate network coding at link-layer level (decode-and-forward) into the simultaneous transmission of RSs. Data movement is rearranged to maximize coding gain. Formula is derived to dictate exact movement of packets traveling between base station (BS) and mobile stations (MSs) via intermediate RSs. The frame structure in the current IEEE 802.16j draft standard does not allow broadcast needed for network coding. We devise a new frame structure which supports the broadcast. A new R-MAP (pointers to the burst data) is introduced to implement the broadcast. Since our new frame structure is used only for BS to RS or RS to RS communication, our schemes retain backward compatibility with legacy MSs based on IEEE 802.16e standard. Simulation based on simple configuration of RSs shows considerable improvement in terms of system throughput and round trip delay. For a 4-hop relay network with 1 BS and 4 RSs with symmetric traffic in uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), throughput is improved by 49% in DL and by 84% in UL traffic compared with IEEE 802.16j draft standard under the assumption that omni-directional antennae are used in BS and RSs.

  • In this paper, BER performance and error convergence speed of layered LDPC(Low Density Parity Check) decoder which supports IEEE 802.16e WiMAX standard is analyzed, and optimal design conditions for hardware implementation are derived. A LDPC decoder is modeled and simulated at AWGN channel with QPSK modulation by Matlab. The parity check matrix(PCM) for IEEE 802.16e standard which has block lengths of 576, 1440, 2304 and code rates of 1/2, 2/3A, 2/3B, 3/4A, 3/4B, 5/6 are used. Fixed-point simulation results show that fixed-point bit-width should be more than 8 bits for acceptable decoding performance.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 has been emerging as the popular choice for various monitoring and control applications. In this paper, a fault management system for DC power-lines has been designed using IEEE 802.15.4, in order to monitor DC power-lines in real time, and to rapidly detect faults and shut off the line where such faults occur. Numbers were allocated for each node and unslotted CSMA-CA method of IEEE 802.15.4 was used, the performance of which was analyzed by a simulation. For such purpose, a total of 60 bits of the control data consisting of 16 bits of the current, 16 bits of the amplitude, 28 bits of the terminal state data were sent out, and the packet transfer rate and the transmission delay time of the fault management system for DC power-lines were measured and analyzed. When the traffic load was 330 packets per second or lower, the average delay time was shown to be shorter than 0.02 seconds, and when the traffic load was 260 packets per second or lower, the packet transfer rate was shown to be 99.99% or higher. Therefore, it was confirmed that the stringent condition of US Department of Energy (DOE) could be satisfied if the traffic load was 260 packets per second or lower, The results of this study can be utilized as basic data for the establishment of the fault management system for DC power-lines using IEEE 802.15.4.

  • This paper aims at designing an impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transceiver, especially targeting the IEEE 802.15.4a indoor ranging and communication systems. We first investigate the IEEE 802.15.4a IR-UWB signals and suggest the full-digital transceiver architecture accordingly. Since the wireless systems equipped with the impulse signal have the property of low-duty cycle, i.e., discontinuity in time, while the conventional systems takes the continuous signals, it is required to reconfigure the system design, including link budget. Following brief introduction to our IEEE 802.15.4a IR-UWB system hardware, we finally examine the ranging performance in indoor environments to verify our system design.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth provisioning method based on traffic forecasting in IEEE 802.16e packet core network. The traffic is categorized as 4-different classes and the traffic amount of each class is forecasted by the Box-Jenkins method. To increase the service provider's revenue we provision the bandwidth of 4-different classes dynamically using greedy algorithm. The simulation results show that the number of packet drops is reduced and the level of QoS is improved compared with two different the methods - no priority considering and static provisioning.

  • A lot of works on the throughput analysis of the IEEE 802.11 DCF have been studied since last few years. However, we should predict the throughput of the IEEE 802.11g that we mostly use today because the existing numerical results do not consider exactly the IEEE 802.11g with the physical layer ERP-OFDM parameters. In particular, we might have different results in the working WLAN s compared with the simple predictions of the throughput using the previous results. In this paper, we directly monitor the ERP-OFDM physical layer parameters on the operating WLANs, and then analyze the saturated DCF throughput with the well-known analytic model. Moreover, we measure the bandwidth utilization on the real WLANs working with FTP services, and then compare them with the analytic results. According to the experiment results, we confirm the usefulness of the analytic models which assume the saturated traffic sources.

  • In this paper, an analytic model of a sleep mode operation in the IEEE 802.16e is investigated. A mobile subscriber station(MSS) goes to sleep mode after negotiations with the base station(BS) and wakes up periodically for a short interval to check whether there is downlink traffic to it. If the arrival of traffic is notified, an MSS returns to wake mode. Otherwise, it again enters increased sleep interval which is double as the previous one. In order to consider the situation more practically, we propose the sleep mode starting threshold, during which MSS should await packets before it enters the sleep mode. By modifying the M/G/l with multiple vacations model, energy consumption ratio(ECR) and average packet response time are calculated. Our analytic model provides potential guidance in determining the optimal parameters values such as sleep mode starting threshold, minimal sleep and maximal sleep window.

  • In this paper, we propose a mechanism for increasing the handover performance of the IEEE 802.11 link layer. The mechanism reduces the number of scanning channels by referencing an AP map based on GPS. Also, by monitoring the SNRs of the mobile node and neighbor APs, it enables the handover to maintain a higher SNR than a given threshold. The experimental results establish that it has a disconnection ratio of 6.7% and an average SNR of 16.8 dB. It is 4.1% lower disconnection ratio and 26% higher SNR than the mechanism used by MadWifi.

  • In this paper, we designed an embedded audio video bridging (AVB) platform based on IEEE 802.1BA for real-time multimedia transmission in smart-car, smart-home, smart-theater, and then evaluated a performance of the implemented platform by analysis of IEEE 802.1AS (time synchronization protocol) and IEEE 802.1Qat (stream reservation protocol). Especially, the AVB Layer-2 protocol of MRP(Multiple Registration Protocol), MMAP(Multicast Address Acquisition Protocol), IEEE 1722, 1722.1 etc. was and implemented by linux based operating system. It is shown by interoperability tests with commercial products that the implemented platform transmits real-time multichannel AV data over AVB networks for Multichannel Multimedia Transmission.

  • IoT has been consistently used in various fields such as smart home, wearables, and healthcare. Since IoT devices are small terminals, relatively simple wireless communication protocols such as IEEE 802.15.4 and ISO 18000 series are used. In this paper, we designed the 802.15.4q 2.4 GHz TASK physical layer. Physical protocol data unit of TASK supports bit-level interleaving and shortened BCH encoding. It is spread by unique ternary sequences. There are four spreading factors to choose the data rate according to the communication channel environment. The TASK physical layer was designed using verilog-HDL and verified through the loop-back test of the transceiver. The designed TASK physical layer was implemented in a fpga and tested using MAXIM RFICs. The PER was about 0% at 10 dB SNR. It is expected to be used in small, low power IoT applications.
