  • With advance in technologies for wireless sensor networks(WSNs), 2.4 GHz band has become gradually attractive due to increase in low-power wireless communication devices. Especially ZigBee(IEEE 802.15.4-based) technology whose frequency band includes the 2.4GHz industrial, scientific and medical band providing nearly worldwide availability has been universally applicable to a various remote monitoring system and applications related home network system. However network throughput of these systems is significantly deteriorated due to this ISM band is a license-exemption used in a variety of low-power wireless communication devices. For instance, other IEEE 802 wireless standards such as Bluetooth, WLAN, Wi-Fi and others cause radio interference to ZigBee. The experiments was carried out to analyze radio frequency interference between heterogeneous devices using ISM bands to improve the limited frequency utility factor. Finally this paper suggests a frequency hopping-based adaptive multi-channel methods to decrease interference with empirical results.

  • The recent rapid growth of the IoT(Internet of Things) is leading to the spread of low-power wireless technology. A major challenge in designing IoT wireless networks is to achieve coexistence between different wireless technologies that share the 2.4 [GHz] ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) frequency band. Therefore, there is a need for research on improving the reliability of wireless networks and coexisting operation between wireless networks. In particular, it is necessary to study an interference model and performance for mutual service coexistence in a BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) wireless network environment, which is expected to be widely used as a connection medium between devices in various industrial fields. In this paper, the co-channel interference model with the IEEE 802.15.4 system is established focusing on the physical layer of the BLE system widely used in residential and industrial wireless applications, and the performance of the BLE wireless communication system is analyzed in the co-channel interference environment. As a result of the analysis, as the distance between the interference source and the BLE system increases in an environment where noise and co-channel interference exist, the amount of co-channel interference decreases and the error rate performance of the BLE system improves.

  • Recently Task Group (TG) 4 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.15a has been recommended a system with ranging capability in existence of multiple Simultaneous operating piconets (SOPs) as well as low-cost, low-power. According to the ranging service, coherent and non-coherent based ranging schemes using ternary code have been adopted as a standard. However it is hard to estimate an accurate time of arrival (TOA) in case of using direct sequence based TOA estimation method because pulse repetition interval (PRI) offered by TG is more limited than the maximum excess delay (MED) of channel. To mitigate inter pulse interference (IPI) problem, this paper proposes a non-coherent TOA estimation scheme using non-periodic transmission (NPT) pattern. The proposed receiver is based on a non-coherent energy detection considering with motivation of low rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN). TOA information is estimated via proper comparison with a prescribed threshold after the sliding correlation and search back window (SBW) process for reducing TOA error. To verify the performance of proposed ranging scheme, two distinct channel models approved by IEEE 802.15.4a TG are considered. According to the simulation results, we could conclude that the proposed scheme have performed better performance than the conventional method on the existence of multiple SOPs.

  • We propose ID-exchange protocol for Connectionless Location-Awareness Service (CLAS) to locate mobile nodes in indoor sensor network. When adapting location-awareness service to sensor network, the target system must be designed in accordance with various metrics which reflect the system requirement. We especially consider sustainability of the existing service which has been provided for its original purpose, such as environmental monitoring. The detailed meaning of sustainability here is that, even if location-awareness service is newly added to the existing service, the system must be assured to retain a stable network condition, and to deal with newly caused traffic properly. The CLAS ID-exchange protocol is especially designed for fixture and mobile nodes communication to achieve these properties. The protocol operates on 802.15.4 MAC layer to make mobile node work independently of the procedure to build routing table of fixture node, so a stable routing condition can be achieved even if there are many mobile nodes. Moreover, the dedicated frequency channel is assigned only for this protocol, so that traffic caused by location-awareness service can be distributed to another channel. A real system adapting the protocol was implemented to monitor fire and authorities' positions. We verified the overhead and elapsed time for location-awareness. The result shows the proposed protocol has a high performance in detecting speed, traffic distribution, and stability of overall network.

  • To provide scalability, wireless sensor network has cluster-based architecture. Wireless sensor network can be implemented based on the IEEE 802.15.4 which is exploited in 2.4GHz ISM frequency band. Since this frequency band is used for various data communication, network status of wireless sensor networks frequently changes according to wireless environment. Thus, wireless channel selection to avoid reduction of transmission efficiency is required. This paper estimates network status using the information that a cluster-head collects in a cluster. Through objective function with throughput, RSSI level and reliability as input parameters, this paper proposes proper wireless channel selection. Simulation results show that the proposed method maintains transmission efficiency even though network status changes.

  • Recently, RFID/USN is one of fundamental technologies in information and communications networks. Low-Rate WPAN, IEEE802.15.4 is a low-cost communication network that allows wireless connectivity in applications with limited Power and relaxed throughput requirements. Its applications are building automation, personal healthcare, industrial control, consumer electronics, and so on. Some applications require location information. Of course location awareness is useful to improve usability of data Low-Rate WPAN Is regarded as a key specification of the sensor network with the characteristics of wireless communication, computing, energy scavenging, self-networking, and etc. Unfortunately ZigBee alliance propose a lot of applications based on location aware technologies, but the specification and low-rate WPAN devices don't support anything about location-based services. RSSI ( Received Signal Strength indication) is for energy detection to associate, channel selection, and etc. RSSI is used to find the location of a potable device in WLAN. In this paper we studied indoor location awareness using vector matching of RSSI in low-Rate wireless PAN. We analyzed the characteristics of RSSI according to distance and experimented location awareness. We implemented sensor nodes with different shapes and configured the sensor network for the location awareness with 4 fixed nodes and a mobile node. We try to contribute developing location awareness method using RSSI in 3-dimension space.

  • For a realization of the ubiquitous society, applying IT to vehicle industry has recently been an attractive issue to make wireless communication in body area network possible to everywhere. In this paper, we propose the physical layer symbol structure based on PPM scheme of the IEEE 802.15.4a for the off-body high data rate WBAN system. We propose four symbol structures which is classified according to the number of the chip and whether the channel coding is used or not. We calculate the required SNR through the link budget calculation and the recently proposed off-body WBAN channel environment was applied in the simulation. The results of four systems show that small number of burst's chip enhances the performance and the system is capable to achieve the data rate of 10 Mbps.

  • In order for heterogeneous unlicensed devices to co-exist on the same frequency band, the frequency interference avoidance mechanism is necessary. In this paper, a frequency interference between WLAN and WPAN systems that operate at 2.4 GHz ISM band was analyzed in the MAC layer. We observed that WPAN systems suffer from severe interference from WLAN systems. To avoid this interference problem, we propose a new channel shift algorithm for WPAN systems. We showed that the proposed channel shift algorithm is better than the traditional WPAN system which uses a fixed channel in terms of throughput.

  • In this paper, we propose a threshold estimation algorithm for a noncoherent IR-UWB receiver using 1-bit sampler. The proposed method reduces the hardware complexity by using the information of binary data resulted from 1-bit sampler instead of measuring the energy level of a received signal. Besides, mathematical modeling shows that the performances are similar to those of theoretically optimal threshold in terms of bit error rate. Computer simulations based on the IEEE 802.15.4a channel model also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm.

  • The signal model and weighted-average based estimation techniques are proposed to estimate the angle-of-arrival (AOA) parameters of multiple clusters for a low data rate ultrawide band (LR-UWB) based wireless positioning system. It is observed that the weighted-average based AOA estimation technique gives an optimal AOA estimate under few clusters condition, and the average based AOA estimation technique gives a correct AOA estimate under many clusters condition through computer simulation. Also, we can observe that the variance estimation error decreases as SNR increases, and the proposed techniques are superior to the conventional technique from the viewpoint of performance.
