In this paper, a novel ultra wide band(UWB) antenna with tri-band notch capability is proposed. The proposed antenna can reject WiMAX(3.3~3.7 GHz), WLAN IEEE 802.11a/n(5.15~5.825 GHz), and ITU(8.025~8.4 GHz) bands. Band rejection capability is achieved only split ring resonators(SRRs) and complementary SRRs(CSRRs). The SRR under the radiating patch, the CSRR loaded on the radiating patch, and the CSRRs on the ground of the CPW feeding reject the WiMAX, WLAN, and ITU bands, respectively. The simulation and measurement results demonstrate the performances of the proposed antenna.

This paper describes a multi-mode LDPC decoder which supports three block lengths(648, 1296, 1944) and four code rates(1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6) of IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard. To minimize hardware complexity, it adopts a block-serial (partially parallel) architecture based on the layered decoding scheme. A novel memory reduction technique devised using the min-sum decoding algorithm reduces the size of check-node memory by 47% as compared to conventional method. From fixed-point modeling and Matlab simulations for various bit-widths, decoding performance and optimal hardware parameters such as fixed-point bit-width are analyzed. The designed LDPC decoder is verified by FPGA implementation, and synthesized with a 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS cell library. It has 219,100 gates and 45,036 bits RAM, and the estimated throughput is about 164~212 Mbps at 50 MHz@2.5v.
This paper focuses on contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols used in wireless local area networks. We propose a novel MAC protocol called adaptive backoff tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the request-to-send/clear-to-send mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.

The LDPC(Low-Density Parity-Check) code, which is one of the channel encoding methods in IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard, has superior error-correcting capabilities. Since the hardware complexity of LDPC decoder is high, it is very important to take into account the trade-offs between hardware complexity and decoding performance. In this paper, the effects of LLR(Log-Likelihood Ratio) approximation on the performance of MSA(Min-Sum Algorithm)-based LDPC decoder are analyzed, and some optimal design conditions are derived. The parity check matrix with block length of 1,944 bits and code rate of 1/2 in IEEE 802.11n WLAN standard is used. In the case of $BER=10^{-3}$, the $E_b/N_o$ difference between LLR bit-widths (6,4) and (7,5) is 0.62 dB, and $E_b/N_o$ difference for iteration cycles 6 and 7 is 0.3 dB. The simulation results show that optimal BER performance can be achieved by LLR bit-width of (7,5) and iteration cycle of 7.

One interesting problem regarding wireless local area network (WLAN) ad-hoc networks is the effective mitigation of hidden nodes. The WLAN standard IEEE 802.11 provides request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) as mitigation for the hidden node problem; however, this causes the exposed node problem. The first 802.11 standard provided only two transmission rates, 1 and 2 Mbps, and control frames, such as RTS/CTS assumed to be sent at 1 Mbps. The 802.11 standard has been enhanced several times since then and now it supports multi-rate transmission up to 65 Mbps in the currently popular 802.11n (20 MHz channel, single stream with long guard interval). As a result, the difference in transmission rates and coverages between the data frame and control frame can be very large. However adjusting the RTS/CTS transmission rate to optimize network throughput has not been well investigated. In this paper, we propose a method to decrease the number of exposed nodes by increasing the RTS transmission rate to decrease RTS coverage. Our proposed method, Asymmetric Range by Multi-Rate Control (ARMRC), can decrease or even completely eliminate exposed nodes and improve the entire network throughput. Experimental results by simulation show that the network throughput in the proposed method is higher by 20% to 50% under certain conditions, and the proposed method is found to be effective in equalizing dispersion of throughput among nodes.

IEEE 802.11n standard provides a framework for new link adaptation. A station can request that another station provide a Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) feedback, to fully exploit channel variations on a link. However, if the time elapsed between MCS feedback request and the data frame transmission using the MCS feedback becomes bigger, the previously received feedback information may be obsolete. In that case, the effectiveness of the feedback-based link adaptation is compromised. If a station can estimate how fast the channel quality to the target station changes, it can improve accuracy of the link adaptation. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, through a thorough NS-2 simulation, we show how the coherence time affects the performance of the MCS feedback based link adaptation of 802.11n networks. Second, this paper proposes an effective algorithm for coherence time estimation. Using Allan variance information statistic, a station estimates the coherence time of the receiving link. A proposed link adaptation scheme considering the coherence time can provide better performance.
To improve the efficiency of wireless channel, IEEE 802.11ac uses the DL MU-MIMO MAC scheme through which an AP transmits multiple frames to different mobile nodes simultaneously. IEEE 802.11ac DL MU-MIMO MAC needs a new step, called as TXOP sharing, between legacy IEEE 802.11n DL SU-MIMO's two operations, the obtaining an EDCA TXOP and the transmitting multiple frames for EDCA TXOP. In the TXOP sharing operation, both wireless channel destinations and frames transmitted for its TXOP period should are determined. So this paper deals with the TXOP sharing for improving IEEE 802.11ac MAC performance. However, the EDCA priority based method mentioned by IEEE 802.11ac standard document not fair among the buffers and the frames of buffers, and occurs in high_loss rate and high_delay about specific buffers. In this paper, we propose a new scheme of the TXOP sharing with sequencing p-AC, s-AC in similar properties, and all S-AC. This method provides a differentiated service without damage of EDCA characteristics.

In this paper, authors have been evaluated the Frame Error Rate (FER) performance of IEEE 802.11 a/g/p standard 5 GHz frequency band WLAN over Rayleigh and Rician distributed fading channels in presence of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based transceiver is implemented by using real-time signal processing frameworks (IEEE 802.11 Blocks) in GNU Radio Companion (GRC) and Ettus USRP N200 is used to process the symbol over the wireless radio channel. The FER is calculated for each sub-carrier conventional modulation schemes used by OFDM such as BPSK, QPSK, 16, 64-QAM with different punctuated coding rates. More precise SNR is computed by modifying the SNR calculation process of YANS and NIST error rate model to estimate more accurate FER. Here, real-time signal constellations, OFDM signal spectrums etc. are also observed to find the effect of multipath propagation of signals through flat and frequency selective fading channels. To reduce the error rate due to the multipath fading effect and Doppler shifting, channel estimation (CE) and equalization techniques such as Least Square (LS) and training based adaptive Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm are applied in the receiver. The simulation work is practically verified at GRC by turning into a pair of Software Define Radio (SDR) as a simultaneous transceiver.
