  • Recently, various types of wireless networks have been proliferated. Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11 WLAN, 802.16e Mobile WiMAX (or Wibro) and 3G celluar networks are some examples. Accordingly, research on seamless mobility support mechanisms among homogeneous or heterogeneous networks has drawn significant interests. This paper examines recent research efforts on seamless mobility support mechanisms from link to transport layer. Yet, no single solution meets all the requirements for supporting the seamless mobility and it seems hard to tell which layer is the most appropriate one for supporting mobility. This area is still wide open and needs further research.

  • Since subscribers, who pay the same communication fees, have a strong desire to take similar services with the other users, it is an important issue to provide fairness among those subscribers wherever they are located. Therefore, in this paper we propose a QoS packet scheduler that can provide fairness among wireless LAN terminals and evaluate its performance using computer simulation. The key idea of this scheduler is to reduce the CW value of the wireless LAN terminal that has failed in sending its packets due to channel transmission error in order to offer the wireless MM terminal a higher transmission priority which is the idea of service compensation. We evaluate its performance using NS-2 network simulator, compare its numerical results to those of IEEE 802.11e without this scheme, and conclude that this scheme can reduce throughput difference between similar wireless LAN terminals.

  • In this paper, we investigate the parameters of the IEEE 802.11e MAC protocol, CWmin and AIFS, in terms of their capability of QoS control. The delay and the bandwidth performances are selected as the QoS medics to examine the characteristics of those parameters. A policy on MAC parameters usage, thereby, is proposed. We regard the MAC-level traffic classification as the differentiation in the channel accessibility, and thus the delay differentiation is referred to a main issue of the class-level QoS control. Realizing the tight relationship between the delay performance and the parameter AIFS, we derive an analytical expression of their relationship through an analysis of the MAC mechanism. Various simulations are examined which show the validity of our assertions, and a policy on the parameters usage is proposed based on those observations.

  • The number of industry wireless networks based on IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology deployed in large outdoor work sites, such as freight container terminal, is increasing these days. Wider service coverage, frequent movements of stations and high requirement on service reliability are main characteristics of these networks compared to the conventional IEEE 802.11 networks used in home, office and school. While the importance of these networks Bets higher, we can hardly find previous studies including concrete analysis on these networks based on actual experiments. We carried out several field experiments at a freight container terminal to analyze its IEEE 802.11 network and found out some problematic situations, such as over 50% retransmission rates and frequent disruption of communication link while a station is moving. We explain why these problematic situations happen and suggest some solutions, such as application of mesh technology, smart handoff based on location and movement pattern and adjustment of signal strength and channel allocation. Methods and tools used in the experiments are also detailed in the paper which may be helpful for similar future studies.

  • Recently, users want to use real-time multimedia services, such as internet, VoIP, etc., using their IEEE 802.11 wireless lan mobile stations. In order to provide such services, a handoff among access points is essential to support the mobility of a node, in such an wide area. However, the legacy handoff methods of IEEE 802.11 technology are easy to lose connections. Also, the recognition of a disconnection and channel re-searching time make the major delay of the next AP to connect. In addition, because IEEE 802.11 decides the selection of an AP depending only on received signal strength, regardless of a node direction, position, etc., it cannot guarantee a stable bandwidth for communication. Therefore, in order to provide a real-time multimedia service, a node must reduce the disconnection time and needs an appropriate algorithm to support a sufficient communication bandwidth. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm which predicts a handoff point of a moving node by using GPS location information, and guarantees a high transmission bandwidth according to the signal strength and the distance. We implemented the suggested algorithm, and confirmed the superiority of our algorithm by reducing around 3.7ms of the layer-2 disconnection time, and guaranteed 24.8% of the communication bandwidth.

  • A novel design of a simple circular ring with open-ended monopole antenna for wireless local area network (WLAN) applications is proposed in this article. The proposed antenna consists of an open-ended circular ring and $50-{\Omega}$ microstrip feed-line. The proposed antenna is capable of generating two separate resonant modes with good impedance-matching conditions. A prototype of the proposed antenna is designed, fabricated, and measured. Acceptable agreement between the measurement and simulation results is achieved. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna has operating bandwidths of 1.99-3.04 GHz and 5.08-6.1 GHz with a return loss of less than -10 dB, covering the required bandwidths of the 2.4/5.2/5.8-GHz WLAN standards. This is a microstrip antenna for IEEE 802.11a/b wireless local area networks applications. Meanwhile, the two-dimensional (2D) radiation patterns and three-dimensional (3D) gain performance of the antenna are also observed and discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a practical implementation of network-adaptive HD(high definition) MPEG-2 video streaming with a cross-layered channel monitoring(CLM) over the IEEE 802.11a WLAN(wireless local area network). For wireless channel monitoring, AP(access point) periodically measures the MAC(medium access control) layer transmission information and sends the monitoring information to a streaming server. This makes that the streaming server reacts more quickly as well as efficiently to the fluctuated wireless channel than that of the end-to-end monitoring(E2EM) scheme for the video adaptation. The streaming sewer dynamically performs the priority-based frame dropping to adjust the video sending rate according to the measured wireless channel condition. For this purpose, our streaming system nicely provides frame-based prioritized packetization by using a real-time stream parsing module. Various evaluation results over an IEEE 802.11a WLAM testbed are provided to verify the intended QoS adaptation capability The experimental results show that the proposed system can effectively mitigate the quality degradation of video streaming caused by the fluctuations of time-varying wireless channel condition.

  • Link Adaptation should select the best modulation and coding scheme (MCS) which gives the highest throughput as channel conditions vary. Several link adaptation algorithms for wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed but for the future WLAN systems such as 802.11n system, these algorithms do not guarantee the best performance. In this paper, we propose a new link adaptation algorithm in which an MCS level is chosen by the received SNR plus the offset value obtained from the transmission results. The performance of proposed algorithm is simulated by an IEEE 802.11n system. From the analysis, we conclude the proposed algorithm performs better than the well-known link adaptation algorithms such as auto rate fallback and general SNR-based techniques. Particularly, the proposed algorithm improves throughput when the packet error ratio (PER) is constrained for fast fading channels.

  • We identify the problem of the current IEEE 802. lie HCCA (Hybrid Coordination Function Controlled Channel Access) scheduler and its numerous variations, that the queue information cannot be notified to the Hybrid Coordinator (HC) timely, therefore the uplink delay lengthens unnecessarily. We suggests a simple solution and a couple of implementation practices, namely the Adaptive Scheduler with RTS/CTS (ASR) and Adaptive Scheduler with Data/Ack (ASD). They are both further elaborated to emulate the Deficit Round Robin (DRB) scheduler. They are finally compared with existing exemplary schedulers through simulations, and shown to perform well.
