The mean residual life(MRL) function gives the expected remaining life of a item at age t. In particular F is said to be an increasing intially then decreasing MRL(IDMRL) distribution if there exists a turing point $t^*\ge0$ such that m(s)$\le$ m(t) for 0$$\le s$\le$ t $t^*$, m(s)$\ge$ m(t) for $t^*\le$ s$\le$ t. If the preceding inequality is reversed, F is said to be a decreasing initially then increasing MRL(DIMRL) distribution. Hawkins, et al.(1992) proposed test of H0 : F is exponential versus$H_1$: F is IDMRL, and $H_0$ versus $H_1$' : F is DIMRL when turning point is unknown. Their test is based on a complete random sample $X_1$, …, $X_n$ from F. In this paper, we generalized Hawkins-Kochar-Loader test to random censored data.

In a resent paper, Na, Lee and Kim(1998) develop a test statistic for testing whether or not the mean residual life changes its trend based on complete data and show that the new test performs better than previously known tests. In this paper, we extend their test to the randomly censored data. The asymptotic normality of the test statistic is established. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to compare our test with a previously known test by the power of tests.

We studied the trend change of failure rate function and uncertainty of residual life function in terms of location of their trend change points. It is shown that the trend change of uncertainty of residual life takes place before the failure rate changes its trend. Like DIFR(IDFR) does not necessary implies IDMRL(DIMRL), we find the fact that DIFR(IDFR) does not always imply IDURL(DIURL) under certain conditions, through the exponentiated-weibull distribution.

This is primarily an expository paper that presents several nonparametric procedures for testing exponentiality against certain monotonicity properties of the mean residual life function, tests against the trend change in such function attract a great deal of attention of late in reliability analysis. In this note, we present some of the known testing procedures regarding the behavior of mean residual life function. These tests are also compared in terms of asymptotic relative efficiency and empirical power against a few alternatives. The tests based on incomplete data are also briefly discussed.
