  • Low and high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) coupled with ion chromatography (IC) has been investigated for speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). In particular, the interference of ArC^+formed by the carbon in a sample on the simultaneous determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) has been studied. In chemical speciation, this study shows that quadrupole type ICP-MS with low resolution has a limitation of simultaneous determination fo chromium species if the sample contains the carbon elements. The interference problems can be solved by high resolution ICP-MS.

  • In this study, we compared three different pretreatment methods, such as block digestion, microwave digestion and solvent injection, coupled with Octopole Reaction System(ORS)-ICP-MS was used for the quantification of heavy metals in mainstream smoke of 2R4F reference cigarette, and then evaluated those efficiencies in the recovery, repeatability and reproducibility. In all methods, volatile heavy metals, As, showed the highest CV value, and Cd showed the lowest one. However, the solvent injection method showed the most stable recovery rate and CV value of 2.36 %. This method showed also advantages in time-consuming and compatibility with ICP-MS system. This results demonstrate that solvent injection method can be recommended as a superior pretreatment procedure to be able to reduce contaminants and spectral interference as well as loss of the elements interested.

  • The simultaneous determination of As(III), As(V), and DMA has been performed by ion chromatography (IC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The separation of the three arsenic species was achieved by an anionic separator column (AS 7) with an isocratic elution system. The separated species were directly detected by ICP-MS as an element-selective detection method. The IC-ICP-MS technique was applied for the determination of arsenic species in a NIST SRM 1643d water sample. An As(III) only was detected in the sample. The detection limits of As(III), As(V) and DMA were 0.31, 0.45, and 2.09 ng/mL, respectively. It was also applied for the determination of arsenic species in a human urine obtained by a volunteer, and three arsenic species were identified. The determination of total As in human urines that were obtained from 25 volunteers at the different age was also carried out by ICP-MS.

  • The analytical performance of four commercially-available pneumatic nebulizers(Meinhard, Cross-flow, Babington, ESI PFA) was evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instruments. The performance of an inert concentric nebulizer and a modified conespray nebulizer, made in Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), is compared with that of the four commercial nebulizers. Variation of sample introduction efficiency was investigated as carrier argon pressure and sample uptake rate were changed. Variation of sensitivity, signal stability, blank intensity and oxide/hydride ratios were also studied when the nebulizers were connected to the ICP-MS and ICP-AES instruments. It was found that good analytical result such as high sensitivity, low blank, stable signal and so on can be obtained with judicious selection of the nebulizer depending on the type of sample, sample amount, type of analytical instrument and analyte.

  • An ultra-sensitive detection method for small molecules such as antibiotics was developed using ICP-MS with magnetic and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Since most of the antibiotics are too small to employ a sandwich-type extraction through an immunoreaction, a non-specific platform was employed, in which the target was extracted by magnetic separation, followed by tagging with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles of 11.2 nm for ICP-MS measurement. The detection limit for salinomycin obtained from spiked serum samples was $0.4ag\;mL^{-1}$ (${\pm}10.3%$), which was about $1.5{\times}10^6$ times lower than that of LC-MS/MS and about $1.2{\times}10^{11}$ times better than that of ELISA. Such an excellent sensitivity enabled us to study the toxicity of antibiotics exposed to human beings by determining them in serum.

  • Ammonium biflouride ($NH_4HF_2$) digestion was studied for germanium analysis in rock and sediment by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). QLO-1 and SDO-1 are used for reference materials from USGS. Sediment, basalt and ball clay for GeoPT were chosen as real samples. The loss of germanium in open vessel digestion was well known which can be caused by easy transformation to volatile compounds. But ammonium bifluoride digestion could suppress loss of germanium in open vessel digestion. Germanium recovery was not influenced by hydrogen peroxide with ammonium bifluoride digestion. Furthermore, the new method was simple and rapid in germanium analysis by ICP/MS. MDL(method detection limit) was 0.015 ${\mu}g/g$ and germanium recovery was 106~128%.

  • LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon age was determined from the granite gneiss from Jeungsan-Pyeongwon area located to the west of Pyeongan Basin, North Korea, yielding concordant age of $1,873{\pm}19(2{\sigma})$Ma interpreted as Paleoproterozoic granitic magmatism. Considering relatively precise data reported recently using SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS, ages around 1,870 Ma have been most frequently reported from Precambrian basement rocks of Korean peninsula, including Yeongnam, Gyeonggi, and Nangnim massifs altogether. Geologic events of this period are interpreted as not only granitic magmatism but also hightemperature regional metamorphism depending on their localities. The magmatic and regional metamorphic events of similar periods have also been reported from neighboring cratons of both North China and South China. Therefore, we need more data and efforts to decipher correlation between Precambrian basements between Korea and China.

  • Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare concentrations and the correspondence of human blood cadmium by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which are representative methods of heavy metal analysis. Methods: We randomly selected 79 people who agreed to participate in the research project. After confirming the linearity of the calibration curves for GF-AAS and ICP-MS, the concentrations of cadmium in a quality control standard material and blood samples were measured, and the correlation and the degree of agreement were compared. Results: The detection limit of ICP-MS (IDL: $0.000{\mu}g/L$, MDL: $0.06{\mu}g/L$) was lower than that of GF-AAS (IDL: $0.085{\mu}g/L$, MDL: $0.327{\mu}g/L$). The coefficient of variation of the quality control standard material showed stable values for both ICP-MS (clinchek-1: 5.35%, clinchek-2: 6.22%) and GF-AAS (clinchek-1: 7.92%, clinchek-2: 5.22%). Recovery was relatively high for both ICP-MS (clinchek-1: 95.1%, clinchek-2: 92.8%) and GF-AAS (clinchek-1: 91.4%, clinchek-2: 98.8%), with more than 90%. The geometric mean, median, and percentile of blood samples were all similar. The agreement of the two instruments compared with the bias of the analytical values found that about 81% of the analytical values were within ${\pm}30%$ of the deviation from the ideal reference line (y=0). As a result of the agreement limit, the value included in the confidence interval was about 94%, which shows high agreement. Conclusion: In this study, we confirmed there was no significant difference in concentrations of a quality control standard material and blood samples. Since ICP-MS showed lower concentrations than GF-AAS at concentrations below the method detection limit of GF-AAS, it is expected that more precise results will be obtained by analyzing blood cadmium with ICP-MS.

  • A rapid and inexpensive method was developed for the determination of trace silver in geological samples by using sulfhydryl cotton coupled with ICP-MS. The interferences such as $^{90}Zr$, $^{92}Mo$ and $^{93}Nb$ on silver were investigated in detail. Sulfhydryl cotton was found to be an effective adsorbent for separation of interferences for Ag in the solutions. Excellent agreements with the certified values were obtained for all the certified reference materials. The memory effects of Ag by ICP-MS were examined by using different agents, including water, nitric acid, and HCl-thiourea to all standards/samples. The agents also acted as cleansing solutions. A combination of HCl with thiourea gave the minimum memory effect. For comparison of results, a proposed Chinese Geology Survey procedure DC-ARC-AES and a direct determination pretreatment method of ICP-MS (water bath- auqa regia digestion) were studied. Under optimal conditions, the detection limits of our method for $^{107}Ag$ and $^{109}Ag$ were 1.2 ng/g and 1.3 ng/g, which offered much better accuracy for some difficult analysis geological samples such as GBW07604, GBW07605.
