Evaluating the effects of probiotics in pediatrics with recurrent abdominal pain

  • Background: Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is one of the frequent complaints in general practice, particularly in pediatrics and is among the common cause of referral to gastroenterology clinics. Purpose: This study is designed to investigate the effects of probiotics for the treatment of RAP and desired therapeutic outcomes. Methods: One hundred twenty-five children with the diagnosis of RAP according to Rome III criteria for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional abdominal pain (FAP), functional dyspepsia (FD), and abdominal migraine (AM), were enrolled in this double-blind randomized controlled trial. Results: Sixty-five subjects received probiotics, and others received placebo treatment for 4 weeks. Lactobacillus reuteri was therapeutically effective in 32 patients compared to 8 patients, responding to the placebo treatment. Compared to baseline, all pain-related variables showed a significant reduction for the IBS and FD at the end of the 4th week. However, it did not respond well in FAP and AM groups. Pain-related outcomes such as, frequency of the pain, severity, and duration of the pain were decreased following the probiotic treatment. No therapeutic response was seen in AM group after the administration of probiotics. L. reuteri significantly led to pain relief in the overall population, and also in FAP, FD, and IBS subgroups. Conclusion: L. reuteri probiotics are likely to lead to RAP relief and can be recommended for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

A case of a patient with irritable bowel syndrome diagnosed with Shanghanlun Yangmingbing Soseunggi-tang (『상한론(傷寒論)』 양명병(陽明病) 소승기탕(小承氣湯)으로 진단된 과민 대장 증후군 환자 1례)

  • Objective : This study reports on the case of a patient with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) diagnosed by the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS). We tried to verify the therapeutic effects of Soseunggi-tang (SSGT) administration and pathological character. Methods : The patient was administered SSGT for 31 days. We observed the progression of symptoms, patient compliance, and the presence of side effects. The progression of IBS was evaluated based the on Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). Abdominal pain, flatus, visual findings, and patient statements were also assessed. Results : According to the DPIDS, the patient was diagnosed with Yangmingbing (陽明病). As a result, his GSRS score dropped from 15 to 5, the visual analog scale (VAS) score for abdominal pain lowered from 9 to 4, and the VAS score for flatus decreased from 8 to 4. The stool type changed from diarrhea to a loose stool form. Conclusions : SSGT showed therapeutic effects on the patient diagnosed with IBS and Yangmingbing.

  • BiSrCaCuO superconducting thin films have been fabricated by co-deposition using IBS(Ion Beam Sputtering) method. Despite setting the composition of thin film Bi2212 or Bi2223, in both cased, Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 phase were appeared. It was confirmed the obtained field of stabilizing phase was represented in the diagonal direction of the right below end in the Arrhenius plot of temperature of the substrate and $PO_3$ and it was distributed in the reeone.

When operating a complex facility, it is beneficial in equipment management to provide the operator with tools which can help in dicision making for recovery from a failure of the system. The main object of the study is to develop real-time automatic fault detection and diagnosis system for optimal operation of IBS building.

Refolding of Fusion Ferritin by Gel Filtration Chromatography(GFC)

  • Fusion ferritin (heavy chain ferritin, $F_H+$ light chain ferritin, $F_L$), an iron-binding protein, was primarily purified from recombinant Escherichia coli by two-step sonications with urea [1]. Unfolded ferritin was refolded by gel filtration chromatography (GFC) with refolding enhancer, where 50 mM Na-phosphate (pH 7.4) buffer containing additives such as Tween 20, PEG, and L-arginine was used. Ferritin is a multimeric protein that contains approximately 20 monomeric units for full activity. Fusion ferritin was expressed in the form of inclusion bodies (IBs). The IBs were initially solubilized in 4 M urea denaturant. The refolding process was then performed by decreasing the urea concentration on the GFC column to form protein multimers. The combination of the buffer-exchange effect of GFC and the refolding enhancers in refolding buffer resulted in an efficient route for producing properly folded fusion ferritin.

IBS로 증착된 산화물박막의 기판상태에 따른 XRR 특성 변화

  • 본 연구에서는 IBS(Ion Beam Sputter) 증착방법으로 Cr2O3, Ta2O5 타겟을 이용하여 single layer 산화물 박막을 제작하였다. IBS 박막 증착 시 발생하는 전하의 영향을 상쇄시키기 위하여 neutralizer를 사용하였다. 증착 시 기판을 si, quartz, 그리고 sapphire로 변화시켜 각 기판위에 증착한 산화물 박막에 대한 특성평가를 하였으며, 증착 전 기판 cleaning방법에 따른 변화도 같이 관찰하였다. 증착된 박막의 두께, 거칠기, 밀도 등을 평가하기 위해 XRR(X-ray Reflectometer)을 이용하여 살펴보았다. 기판, 박막두께, cleaning 등의 조건을 변화시켜 여러 종류의 박막을 만들었다. Sapphire 기판에 증착한 박막은 XRR 그래프의 변화가 생겼는데 cleaning과 곡률반경에 의한 영향임을 확인하였다. 다른 종류의 기판에서도 같은 현상이 있을 것으로 예상되고, 이런 영향은 IBS로 증착되는 산화물박막을 분석하는 데에 많은 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

  • Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 thin films are prepared by IBS(ion beam sputtering) technique. Three phases of Bi-2201, Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 appear as stable ones in spite of the conditions for thin film fabrication of Bi-2212 and Bi-2223 compositions, depending on substrate temperature($T_{sub}$) and ozone pressure( $PO_3$ ). It is found out that these phases show similar $T_{sub}$ and $PO_3$ dependence, and that the stable regions of these phases are limited within very narrow temperature.
