Purpose: The radial forearm fasciocutaneous free flap is currently considered as the ideal free flap for reconstruction of mucosal and soft tissue defects of the palate. But the availability of stably attached oral and nasal mucosal lining is needed. In addition to this, for better operation field, operating convenience and esthetics, we planned a prelaminated radial forearm free flap. Methods: A 64-year-old male patient was admitted due to a $4{\times}4.5cm$ full through defect in the middle of the hard palate caused by peripheral T cell lymphoma with actinomycosis. In the first stage, the radial forearm flap was elevated, tailored to fit the hard palate defect, and then it positioned up-side down with split thickness skin graft. Two weeks later, the prelaminated radial forearm free flap was re-elevated and transferred to the palatal defect. One side covered with grafted skin was used to line the nasal cavity, and the other side (the cutaneous portion of the radial forearm flap) was used to line the oral cavity. Results: The prelamination procedure was relatively easy and useful. The skin graft was well taken to the flap. After 2nd stage operation, the flap survived uneventfully. There was no prolapse of the inset flap into the oral cavity and the cutaneous portion of the flap was mucosalized. The procedure was very successful and the patient can enjoy normal rigid diet and speech. Conclusion: The use of prelaminated radial forearm free flap for hard palate reconstruction is an excellent method to restore oral function. Based upon the result of this case, microvascular free flap transfer with prelaminated procedure is a valid alternative to the prosthetic obturator for palatal defect that provides an improved quality of life. It should be considered as an integral component of head and neck cancer therapy and rehabilitation.
When U-ribs of steel deck plates are connected at the field, overhead welding should be done with backing strips. Misalignments may occur and lead to eccentric moments as well as high stress concentrations at welded joints. In this study, stress analyses and fatigue tests were carried out. Stress analyses for U-ribs' welded joints with backing strips were performed with different misalignments, root shapes, root gaps, and backing strip sizes. From the stress analyses, the stress concentration factors increased with increasing misalignments and root gaps. With the fixed misalignments and root gaps, the stress concentration factors obtained in the case of the semi-circle root shape were lower than those in the case of the right-angle root shape. It was verified that backing strip sizes have little influence on stress concentration factors. The fatigue tests for U-ribs' welded joints with backing strips indicated that increased misalignments shorten fatigue life drastically and cracks usually initiate at the root of the base metal and are propagated to the weld bead surface. Based on the results of the stress analyses, root-shape control methods were developed to mitigate stress concentration by changing welding condition control, radius curvature, and flank angle.

Using carotenoid genes of Erwinia herbicola, metabolic engineering was carried out for lycopene production with the pAC-LYCO4 plasmid, which was composed of a chromosomal DNA fragment of E. herbicola containing the crtE, crtB, and crtI genes under the control of the tetracycline promoter and the ipi gene of Haematococcus pluvialis with the trc promoter. Plasmid pAC-LYCm4 was constructed for efficient expression of the four exogenous genes using a strong RBS sequence and the same tetracycline promoter. The optimized expression construct of pAC-LYCm4 increased Iycopene production three times as compared with pAC-LYCO4. pAC-LYCm5 containing ispA behind the four exogenous genes was constructed. There was no significant difference in Iycopene production and cell growth between pAC-LYCm4 and pAC-LYCm5. FPP synthase encoded by ispA was not rate-limiting for Iycopene production. Each gene of crtE, crtB, crtI, and ipi was overexpressed, using pBAD-crtE, pBAD-crtIB, and pBAD-ipiHPI, in addition to their expression from pAC-LYCm4. However, there was no increase oflycopene production with the additional overexpression of each exogenous gene. The four exogenous genes appeared to be not rate-limiting in cells harboring pAC-LYCm4. When pDdxs, pBAD24 containing dxs, was introduced into cells harboring lycopene synthetic plasmids, lycopene production of pAC-LYCO4, pAC-LYCm4, and pAC-LYCm5 was increased by 4.7-, 2.2-, and 2.2-fold, respectively. Lycopene production of pBAD-DXm4 containing crtE, crtB, crtI, ipi, and dxs was 5.2 mg/g dry cell weight with $0.2\%$ arabinose, which was 8.7-fold higher than that of the initial strain with pAC-LYC04. Therefore, the present study showed that proper regulation of a metabolically engineered pathway is important for Iycopene production.

This study analyzes water quality change trends in three major rivers in Daejeon and effect of discharge from Daejeon Wastewater Treatment Plant between 1992 and 2014. As of 2014, COD concentration in the Gab-cheon-A station is in level VI for Korea river water quality standard while BOD and TP are in level III. As expansions of the treatment plant, water quality in the Gab-cheon River has been improving accordingly. However, during the study period, TN concentrations of the headwater and the most downstream locations of the Gab-cheon River have increased about twice and three times, respectively. It was estimated that the treatment plant is responsible for 35%. 46%, 76% and 63% of BOD, COD, TN and TP loadings of the Gab-cheon River, respectively. It was also estimated that small tributaries and nonpoint sources are responsible for 54% and 47% of BOD and COD loadings of the Gab-cheon River. Therefore, it is recommended to further reduce nutrient loadings from the treatment plant and also reduce surface runoff organic loading from nonpoint sources including small tributaries and storm sewers.
Purpose: We analyzed the clinical results of ACL(anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction of chronic anterior cruciate ligament injuries with a fresh frozen Achilles allograft, retrospectively. Methods: Thirty-eight patients(average age 32.4 years) who had an chronic injury of ACL reconstructed with an Achilles allograft between January 1999 and February 2001 were included. The mean follow-up was 19.2(12-36) months. The clinical evaluation was done by range of motion, Lachman and pivot-shift test, KT-1000 arthrometer, Lysholm knee score, and the modified Feagin score. Results: All patients recovered full range of motion of affected knees. With use of Lachman and pivot-shift test data, thirty seven(97.4%) were functional. When comparing KT-1000, we found mean maximum side-to-side differences less than 2.1 mm. According to Lysholm knee score, mean postoperative score was 90.4. Thirty four(89.5%) had good to excellent results in modified Feagin score. Conclusion: Results of ACL reconstruction using fresh frozen Achilles allografts were comparable to autografts. ACL reconstruction with Achilles allograft could be a reasonable altemative to autografts.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of treatment with the plant-growth-promoting bacteria on the growth and yield of red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) with different soil electrical conductivity(EC) levels. The mixed liquid culture was done pseudomonas P and saboraud dextrose medium. The isolated bacteria(IB) were inoculated by spray of 3.7ml at 1/2000a pot filled with different soil electrical conductivity level(2.9, 8.6, 11.5dS/m) every week, respectively, with mixed liquid culture (Pseudomonas P+Sabouraud dextrose) of eight strains. The plant height of red pepper with IBs treatment in different soil EC levels showed better growth than IBs nontreatment in the order of the 2.9>8.6>11.5 dS/m. The yield of pepper with IBs treatment in different soil EC level was higher in 13% than IBs nontreatment and chemical properties($P_2O_5$, K, Ca, Mg) of the soil after harvest in IBs treatment were slightly increased, while organic matter and EC of IBs treatment were slightly decreased than those of IBs nontreatment. Moisture content of the soil after the harvesting with IBs treatment was slightly increased than IBs nontreatment.

Purpose: To evaluate treatment outcomes and determine prognostic factors in patients with esophageal cancer treated with esophagectomy after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 39 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed by esophagectomy between 2002 and 2012. Initial clinical stages of patients were stage IB in 1 patient (2.6%), stage II in 5 patients (12.9%), and stage III in 33 patients (84.6%). Results: The median age of all the patients was 62 years, and the median follow-up period was 17 months. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rate was 33.6% in all the patients. The 3-year locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) rate was 33.7%. In multivariate analysis with covariates of age, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, tumor length, clinical response, clinical stage, pathological response, pathological stage, lymphovascular invasion, surgical type, and radiotherapy to surgery interval, only pathological stage was an independent significant prognostic factor affecting both OS and LRFS. The complications in postoperative day 90 were pneumonia in 9 patients, anastomotic site leakage in 3 patients, and anastomotic site stricture in 2 patients. Postoperative 30-day mortality rate was 10.3% (4/39); the cause of death among these 4 patients was respiratory failure in 3 patients and myocardial infarction in one patient. Conclusion: Only pathological stage was an independent prognostic factor for both OS and LRFS in patients with esophageal cancer treated with esophagectomy after NCRT. We could confirm the significant role of NCRT in downstaging the initial tumor bulk and thus resulting in better survival of patients who gained earlier pathological stage after NCRT.
Objective: To evaluate the ability of serum anti-M$\ddot{u}$llerian hormone (AMH), FSH, and age to clinically predict ovarian response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) in IVF patients with endometriosis. Methods: We evaluated 91 COH cycles, including 43 cycles with endometriosis (group I) and 48 cycles with male factor infertility (group II) from January to December, 2010. Patients were classified into study groups based on their surgical history of endometriosis-group Ia (without surgical history, n=16), group Ib (with a surgical history, n=27). Results: The mean age was not significantly different between group I and group II. However, AMH and FSH were significantly different between group I and group II ($1.9{\pm}1.9$ ng/mL vs. $4.1{\pm}2.9$ ng/mL, $p$ <0.01; $13.1{\pm}7.2$ mIU/mL vs. $8.6{\pm}3.3$ mIU/mL, $p$ <0.01). Furthermore, the number of retrieved oocytes and the number of matured oocytes were significantly lower in group I than in group II. In group II, AMH and FSH as well as age were significant predictors of retrieved oocytes on univariate analysis. Only the serum AMH level was a significant predictor of poor ovarian response in women with endometriosis. Conclusion: Serum AMH may be a better predictor of the ovarian response of COH in patients with endometriosis than basal FSH or age. AMH level can be considered a useful clinical predictor of poor ovarian response in endometriosis patients.
The sub-prime crisis led to the collapse of US investment banks which were considered highly competitive during the Asian Financial Crisis. The event gave us a lesson on importance of the financial supervision. Additionally concerns rise over the fact that the role model of the Capital Market Law, created for the purpose of developing the capital market, is the US investment banks. This paper investigates if the prudential regulations, among them especially the capital regulation, are able to prevent the risk the arises from Korean financial firms operating investment bank business. The current capital requirement regulation, Net Capital Ratio(NCR), is not sufficient, because it's nature of being a ratio makes the NCR ineffective when assets and liabilities are concurrently rising. We also verified the internal model which measured the market risk, by comparing the US investment and Korean banks' diversification effect. The result of the test is that it is difficult to conclude the internal model has a critical defect. This paper's contribution is that it is not sufficient use only the capital regulation in supervising financial markets.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the biological function of ODAM and its signal transduction pathway in the steps of ameloblast differentiation and enamel mineralization. An ODAM recombinant protein was produced and stable ODAM transgenic cell lines were also established using ameloblast-lineage cells (ALCs). To verify the ODAM signal transduction pathway, BAMBI recombinant protein, an inhibitor of BMP2 and BMP receptor 1B (BMPR-1B), was treated and BMPR-1B siRNA was used to silence expression of BMPR-1B. Mineralization was augmented by the ALCs treated with the ODAM recombinant protein and the sense ODAM overexpressing cells. The ALP activity was also increased markedly in the sense ODAM overexpressing cells and the ALCs treated with ODAM recombinant protein. The inactivation of ODAM in the ALCs down-regulated the expression of BMPR-1B, whereas its expression was up-regulated markedly when ODAM was overexpressed. These results provide deeper insights into the process of ameloblast maturation and in enamel mineralization. It also suggested that ODAM augmented enamel mineralization.
