  • Successful germination and establishment of seedlings in flooded paddy are critical in direct seeding cultivation of rice. In this study, we examined the relationship between antioxidant enzymes and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activities and coleoptile elongation under submergence of deep water with two rice cultivars, Iksan429 and Woodrose, which show characteristic coleoptile elongation under hypoxic condition. The growth of shoot under submerged in water was faster than the root. The survival duration was longer in Iksan429 than in Woodrose under submerged in water. The alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activities were significantly increased under hypoxia compared to in aerated condition. The ADH activity was increased in Iksan429 more than in Woodrose under hypoxia. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in Iksan429 was gradually increased up to 5 days after treatment (DAT) then decreased slowly till 14 DAT under water, whereas in Woodrose it was dramatically decreased after 5 DAT. The peroxidase (POX) activity in Iksan429 was significantly increased until 7 DAT under hypoxia, whereas it was not significantly different in Woodrose during hypoxic treatment. However, in non-treated condition, POX activity in Woodrose was increased more than Iksan429. The changes of catalase (CAT) activities showed no differences in both cultivars. We suggest that the overexpression of ADH, SOD and POX activities is responsible for the hypoxic tolerance and plays an important role in the surviving of rice seedling.

  • In trauma patients, cognitive impairment may develop due to several causes: traumatic brain injury such as intracranial hemorrhage, diffuse axonal injury, hypoxic brain injury or reperfusion injury, the psychologic disorder, such as acute stress disorder, post-traumatic disorder or delirium. We describe a 62-year-old male with post-trauma cognitive impairment due to a primary central nervous system lymphoma.

  • A 12-yr-old patient was admitted due to severe hemoptysis and known cyanotic CHD. In chest P-A and echocardiogram, pulmonary aspergilloma in left upper lobe was associated with TOF. The cardiac catheterization couldnt be done because of frequent hypoxic spell and severe hemoptysis. Surgical management was performed. After left posterolateral thoractomy, modified Blalock-Taussig shunt operation and left upper lobe lobectomy were done at same time. Postoperative PaO2 was elevated and hemoptysis was disappeared.

  • Estrogen Receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor. The concentration of the receptor is a major component that regulates expression of estrogen-responsive genes. We have studied mechanism of estrogen receptor alpha (ER${\alpha}$) downregulation by HIF-1 using HIF-1${\alpha}$/VP16 constructs. ER${\alpha}$ is known to be downregulated under hypoxic condition. Transcriptional response under hypoxia is mediated through Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), a transcription factor that is usullaly degraded but stabilized under hypoxia. (omitted)

  • Since hypoxia-inducible factor-lalpha (HIF-lalpha) and the arylhydrocarbon receptor (AhR) shared the AhR nuclear translocator (Arnt) for hypoxia- and AhR-mediated signaling, respectively, it was possible to establish the hypothesis that hypoxia could regulate Cyp1a1 expression.(omitted)

  • Hypoxia in solid tumors is known to contribute to intrinsic chemoresistance. Tirapazamine(TPZ). a hypoxia-selective cytotoxin. showed synergism with radiation or cytotoxic agents. Paclitaxel(PTX) is a highly active anti-cancer agent against Non small cell lung cancer(NSCLC), however. due to poor penetration into central hypoxic region of tumor tissue. combination with TPZ has been suggested to enhance its efficacy. • Histone modifications on major transcription factor target genes are one of the major regulatory mechanisms controlling adipogenesis. Plant homeodomain finger 2 (PHF2) is a Jumonji domain-containing protein and is known to demethylate the histone H3K9, a repressive gene marker. To better understand the function of PHF2 in adipocyte differentiation, we constructed stable PHF2 knock-down cells by using the mouse pre-adipocyte cell line 3T3-L1. When induced with adipogenic media, PHF2 knock-down cells showed reduced lipid accumulation compared to control cells. Differential expression using a cDNA microarray revealed significant reduction of metabolic pathway genes in the PHF2 knock-down cell line after differentiation. The reduced expression of major transcription factors and adipokines was confirmed with reverse transcription- quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. We further performed co-immunoprecipitation analysis of PHF2 with four major adipogenic transcription factors, and we found that CCATT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP)${\alpha}$ and C/EBP${\delta}$ physically interact with PHF2. In addition, PHF2 binding to target gene promoters was confirmed with a chromatin immunoprecipitation experiment. Finally, histone H3K9 methylation markers on the PHF2-binding sequences were increased in PHF2 knock-down cells after differentiation. Together, these results demonstrate that PHF2 histone demethylase controls adipogenic gene expression during differentiation.

  • Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy(HIE) is a condition that occurs when the entire brain is deprived of an adequate oxygen supply and associated in most cases with oxygen deprivation in the neonate due to birth asphyxia. Children with HIE develop problems such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, learning difficulties, and other disabilities. We hereby report the case of treating a child patient with HIE whose chief complaint of severe lingual ulceration. A 12-month-old boy referred to our hospital to treat ulcers of ventral surface of tongue. He has been suffering from lingual ulceration due to persistent tongue thrusting. He has bitten his own tongue involuntary. The ulceration was apparently seemed to be not healed because of the constant irritation by lower incisors. So we designed tongue protector to prevent lingual ulcers. The appliance was proved to be effective to reduce tongue trauma by lower incisors and periodic follow-up is needed.
