  • This research is to identify the status of the curriculum based on dental hygiene programs, the awareness about medical service technologists, etc. act and job demands of students in the department of dental hygiene. The data was collected by self-reported questionnaires from 536 dental hygiene students. This data was analyzed using SPSS 19.0K program for Windows with a statistical significance level of 0.05. The level of objective awareness of the current Medical Service Technologists Act was higher for females(9.14±1.11) than for males(8.56±1.79)(p=0.043). Meanwhile, there was little difference between college and university(p=0.639), whereas the level dropped as the number of clinical practice experiences went up(p=0.045). Therefore, the law in convergence needs to be revised to reflect the reality of dental hygienists' work, and the dental community needs to change its perception that dental hygienists are not only recognized as assistant workers but also as business partners.

  • This study examined the correlation of educational experience with practical behavior in infection control. Subjects were 152 dental hygienists in Gwangju from September 15 to October 5, 2015. The ratio of dental hygienists educated on infection control was higher in those worked in dental care with 2~4 dentist for 2~5 years and lower in those worked in dental cared with 1 dentist for 2~5 years (p<0.05, p<0.001). The dental hygienists with or without educational experience in infection control exhibited the highest activity rate in hand wash and the lowest in face protection. Barrier in health belief, was lower with the need for education in infection control among the factors affecting on the activity in infection control. The activity was higher with susceptibility and cue to action (p<0.05). Based on the results, education program on infection control should be developed, and applied periodically and obligatorily for dentist and all staffs of dental care to remove susceptibility and barrier, and to enhance cue to action. • The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the content of an educational curriculum by understanding the opinions of experts in the development of weekly educational content for dental communication or communication-related subjects. It was composed of educational content on how to communicate with patients by cultivating a professional attitude through basic contents and a self-understanding of communication. Three experts were asked to evaluate the feasibility of educational contents and their appropriateness in order to evaluate the criteria for certification as a dental hygienist. The validity of the weekly educational contents and the period of education were awarded 4 points out of a maximum of 5 points; overall, the curriculum was evaluated to be valid and to be acceptable for use as criteria for certification evaluation. On the other hand, it was confirmed that not only should the contents be made appropriate for the grade level, but it should be complemented so that theoretical and practical learning can be achieved in a gradual and interrelated manner rather than as a one-time curriculum. Therefore, the result of this study can be considered for use as background data for curriculum development, and for standardization of the communication course in the dental hygiene department.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between dental hygiene students' emotional intelligence, interpersonal competence, and major satisfaction, as a preliminary professional dental hygienist who can provide effective dental hygiene college life and high-quality dental medical services. Attempts were made to find ways to promote it. To collect data, a self-administered questionnaire was developed using a convenient sample method, and the questionnaire survey was conducted on dental hygiene students in Daejeon, Cheongju and Gunsan from April 8, 2019 to April 26, 2019. As a result, it was found that emotional intelligence and interpersonal competence were positively correlated, and there were positive correlation with major satisfaction, and interpersonal competence and major satisfaction were positively correlated. Emotional intelligence, interpersonal competence, and clinical practice satisfaction were the factors that influenced major satisfaction. These results indicate that individually customized counseling and educational approach are required and there is the necessity of utilizing multidimensional improvement strategy that integrate emotional intelligence and interpersonal ability training program.

  • Objectives : This study was to examine factors affecting the job satisfaction of dental hygienists. Methods : The subjects in this study were dental hygienists who worked at dental hospitals, dental clinics and general hospitals in the city of Gwangju. A survey was conducted by mail from January 2 to March 2, 2007. Out of the collected data, 208 answer sheets were analyzed. Results : 1. The dental hygienists investigated got a mean of 3.20 on job satisfaction. Among the job satisfaction factors, relationship with patients ranked highest(3.79), followed by relationship with colleagues(3.62), working environments(3.39), future prospects(3.30), professional status (2.89), pay(2.82) and required workload(2.58). 2. Regarding links between general characteristics and job satisfaction, the older dental hygienists were more satisfied with professional status, pay, required workload and relationship with patients. By marital status, the married dental hygienists expressed better satisfaction at professional status than the unmarried ones. By education, those who were receiving college education or received the same or higher education were more gratified than the junior college graduates. By the total length of career, the dental hygienists whose length of career was longer were more gratified with professional status, future prospects and relationship with patients. By workplace, the dental hospital workers were more satisfied with working environments, and the general hospital employees were more gratified with pay. The dental hospital employees were better satisfied with future prospects as well. As to the impact of the length of career at the current workplace, there was a tendency that those who worked at their current workplaces for a longer time expressed better satisfaction with professional status, pay and relationship with patients. By monthly mean income, the larger income earners had a tendency to be better gratified with professional status, pay and relationship with patients. 3. The general characteristics that were selected as independent variables were identified as the factors that exercised an influence on the job satisfaction of the dental hygienists and made an about 14.0% prediction of it. Out of those factors, the total length of career and monthly mean income had a statistically significant impact on that. Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings suggested that out of the seven job satisfaction components, they gave the lowest marks to satisfaction level with pay. As a result of making a multiple regression analysis, it's found that job satisfaction was under the influence of the total length of career and monthly mean income. Therefore there should be an improvement in the pay system in order to boost the job satisfaction of dental hygienists, and they should be paid properly in accordance with total length of career.

  • To provide necessary information for future environmental monitoring of storage batteries in Korea, authors analyzed environmental monitoring dataset of air lead concentration of 12 storage battery industries measured during 1989-2006. We calculated geometric mean and standard deviation with minimum and maximum value of each year dataset. Air lead concentration data were analyzed according to year of measurement, type of grid manufacturing method (grid casting type or expander type), size of industries and type of operation (casting, lead powder & pasting, assembly and others). The geometric mean and standard deviation of all lead industries for overall 18 years were $72{\mu}g/m^3$ and 3.65 with minimum of $6{\mu}g/m^3$ and maximum of $7,956{\mu}g/m^3$. The geometric mean air lead concentrations of years between 1989-1999 were above the Korean PEL($50{\mu}g/m^3$), whereas those of years after year 2000 were below the Korean PEL showing 50% of it. The geometric mean concentration of air lead was significantly lower in expander method battery industries than that of grid method battery industries and was lower in large sized battery industries than small & medium sized ones throughout the whole 18 years period. The distributions of over PEL($50{\mu}g/m^3$) were decreased by the years of environmental monitoring and those were lower in expander method battery industries than grid method battery industries. The significant reduction of mean air lead concentration during last 10 years may be induced partly due to more active environmental engineering control and new introduction of new operation in grid method battery industries, but may be also influenced by non-engineering method such as reduction of operation hours or reduction of exposure time during actual environmental measurement by industrial hygienist which is not concrete evidence, but just circumstantial evidence.
