The subjects in this study were 268 dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The dental hygienists investigated got a mean of 3.44, 3.81 and 3.46 on professional identity, professional attitude and job satisfaction respectively. 2. In regard to the relationship of the general characteristics to professional identity, those who were older, whose career was longer, who worked in public dental clinics and who were married were statistically significantly ahead of their counterparts in that aspect. 3. Concerning connections between the general characteristics and professional attitude, age, career and marital status made statistically significant differences to that. As to links between the general characteristics and job satisfaction, there were statistically significant intergroup gaps according to age, career, service area, martial status and the field of job. 4. Objectives: Although dental hygienists are professional workers, their job retention is short. Therefore, in order to improve job retention, the relationship between professional identity and professional self-concept was analyzed. Methods: From January 1 to April 30, 2020, 155 dental hygienists were examined. For data analysis, multiple regression analysis was conducted to confirm the effects of professional identity and professional self-concept on job retention. Results: The dental hygienist's professional self-concept was significantly higher in the team manager than in the staff, but the professional identity was not significantly different. Dental hygienists' professional identity, professional self-concept, and job retention were all positively correlated (p<0.05). As a factor influencing dental hygienist's job retention, the self-concept of the profession had a significant effect, but the identity of the profession did not. Conclusions: Since the professional self-concept has a positive effect on maintaining the profession of dental hygienists, it is necessary to make efforts to improve the professional self-concept in order to increase the job retention.
Objectives: This research is to examine the relationship between dental hygienists' exposure to incivility from doctors, bosses, colleagues, patients, their family and visitors, and their turnover intention. Methods: The research was conducted using Nursing Incivility Scale (NIS) and a survey. The survey was conducted from September 10 to October 20, 2015. 240 dental hygienists were conveniently sampled from Forty dental clinics and offices in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeongi-do, and Chungcheog-do. Results: The dental hygienists' exposure to incivility and turnover intention showed correlation (p<0.01), and its sub-factors, - the incivility from colleagues, doctors, patients and visitors - are also correlated with their turnover intention (p<0.01). The strongest factor affecting dental hygienists' turnover intention was incivility from doctors (${\beta}=0.279$, p<0.001), followed by colleagues (${\beta}=0.168$, p=0.029), patients and visitors (${\beta}=0.148$, p=0.026). The modified explanation ability of this model is 24.9%. Conclusions: Dental hygienists' exposure to incivility in workplace is highly correlated to their turnover intention. A program to educate dental hygienists positive mental attitude, communication skill to deal with incivility, and stress reduction method is therefore required in order to reduce their turnover intention.

Results: Total communication competence was 3.63 points. The highest area was 3.88 points for understanding others' standards, and the lowest area was 3.27 points for escaping stereotypes. Most areas of communication showed statistically significant positive correlations, but in some areas, there was an inverse correlation. As a dental hygienist, it is necessary to provide systematic education for improving communication competence from college students. Conclusions: In addition, it is necessary to develop and implement a training program for improving communication competence of dental hygienists.

We report two cases of accidental overdoses of intramuscular midazolam used for a conscious sedation. A 4-year-old boy with dental caries was scheduled for treatment under conscious sedation. The pedodontist prescribed midazolam ($dormicum^{(R)}$ 5 mg / 5 ml) 2 ml (2 mg) by verbal order to hygienist. The hygienist instead of the pedodontist wrote a prescription for midazolam ($dormicum^{(R)}$ 15 mg / 3 ml) 2 ml (10 mg). The inexperienced nurse gave an injection to his buttock as prescription. The child fell into a deep sedation. A 4-year-old boy with dental caries was scheduled for treatment under conscious sedation. The inexperienced pedodontist gave an injection to his buttock midazolam ($dormicum^{(R)}$ 15 mg / 3 ml) 3 ml (15 mg) instead of midazolam ($dormicum^{(R)}$ 5 mg / 5 ml) 3 ml (3 mg). The child fell into a deep sedation. Both cases had no complications, but the accidents happened as a result of the inexperienced dental staffs. The five times midazoalm instead of the intended doses was inadvertently given intramuscularly, fortunately caused no harm in our cases. However, the situations suggest that we should carefully check the dosage and review the correct procedures, even when using a drug that is considered to be familiar with most practitioners.
Objectives: This research aimed to identify the influential factors that affect the satisfaction of dental hygiene students' clinical training between college and university and contribute to improvement in clinical practice quality. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 210 dental clinical hygienists from June 10 to August 30, 2018. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. An independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's post-hoc test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were employed, and a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed. Results: Regarding the influential factors of satisfaction with clinical practice among dental hygiene students, in the case of college students, dental hygienist practice instructor dummy, self-efficacy, satisfaction of school life, interpersonal relation was the increasing order. In the case of university students, dental hygienist practice instructors, subjective health, satisfaction with school life, and interpersonal relations was the increasing order. Conclusions: The most influential factor of dental hygiene students' clinical practice satisfaction between college and university was the ability to form interpersonal relationships. Therefore, to increase the satisfaction of dental hygiene students with clinical practice between college and university, external sources and efforts to emphasize internal sources are required.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the regional distribution and working environment of clinical dental hygienists in Korea. Methods: From 2015 to October 2016, a questionnaire was completed by 5,708 participants and the data were analyzed. Results: The region with the largest increase in clinical dental hygienist employees compared to graduates is Seoul. More than 50.0% of clinical dental hygienists working for less than 1.8 million won in the payroll period of 4-6 years were working in the Gwangju Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Gangwon regions. In addition, incentives and bonuses were rarely provided by localities and agencies. Although 43.4% provided both parental leave and maternity leave. Conclusions: In order to solve the fundamental problem of inter-regional movement and employee turnover rate of clinical dental hygienists, as well as address the regional imbalance in labor supply and demand, efforts should be made for institutional improvement to strengthen management and implementation.
Objectives: This study aimed to provide basic data to establish a foundation for efficient operation of the organization by identifying the factors that affect the job embeddedness of dental hygienists. Methods: A survey was conducted from March to July 2018, targeting dental hygienists working in dental clinics and hospitals. Results: The study of the factors affecting job embeddedness of dental hygienists revealed that along with career, marital status, surface acting of emotional labor, and even emotional hiding and false expression, which are sub-areas of the surface acting, have statistically significant influences on job embeddedness. In other words, in a married dental hygienist with relatively high work experience, the surface acting of emotional labor is found to be high in job embeddedness, and the explanatory power of the model is approximately 53.2%. Conclusions: In order to improve the job embeddedness of clinical dental hygienists, it seems necessary to prepare an effective program to strengthen the surface behavior of emotional labor.
