  • According to our previous study, 500 species of yeast exist in Korea, including nine variants comprising 142 genera and 48 classes in two phyla. Additionally, 4,483 fungal species have been documented at the National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR). However, despite the industrial use of several yeasts, only 173 species formed part of the National Species List of Korea (NSLK) as of December 2021, mainly due to the lack of taxonomic descriptions. This study aimed to investigate the taxonomy of seven newly isolated yeast species (Hyphopichia burtonii, Starmerella sorbosivorans, Cyberlindnera mycetangii, Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosum, Nakazawaea ernobii, Pichia kudriavzevii, and Schizosaccharomyces japonicus) for inclusion in the NSLK. The strains were clustered for the phylogenetic analysis of fungal rDNA (D1/D2-26S) sequences. This study provides descriptions of their cell morphology and physiological characteristics, the results of which confirm the indigenous origin of these seven species in Korea and recommend their inclusion in the NSLK.

  • Bioassay and HPLC-UV guided fractionations of the crude extract of marine-derived Streptomyces sp. SNA-077 have led to the isolation of a red pigment, undecylprodigiosin (1). The chemical structure of undecylprodigiosin (1) was revealed by the interpretation of NMR and mass spectroscopic (MS) data. Further, anti-melanogenic effects of undecylprodigiosin (1) were investigated. First, the melanin contents of undecylprodigiosin (1)-treated B16 cells were evaluated. Furthermore, undecylprodigiosin (1) significantly inhibited the key enzymes involved in melanogenesis, including tyrosinase, tyrosinase related protein-1 (TYRP-1), and dopachrome tautomerase (DCT). The mRNA and protein expression levels of Microphthalmia-associated transcriptian factor (MiTF), a critical transcription factor for tyrosinase gene expression, were also suppressed by undecylprodigiosin (1) treatment in B16 analyses. Collectively, our results suggest for the first time that undecylprodigiosin (1), a potent component isolated from an extract of marine Streptomyces sp. SNA-077, critically exerts the anti-melanogenic ability for melanin synthesis.

  • Common adhesives contain harmful chemicals, posing risks to humans and the environment. Basil seeds, an underutilized resource, can offer a solution. We extracted mucilage from basil seeds and found that altering the basil seed mucilage (BSM) to water ratio allowed us to control the adhesive strength. As the concentration of BSM increased and the water evaporated, adhesive strength improved. BSM can serve as both an adhesive and pressure-sensitive adhesive. This research showcases BSM's impressive strength and stability, making it a promising eco-friendly industrial adhesive option from plant-based sources, revolutionizing the adhesive industry.

  • As the demand for biomaterials and medical devices increases due to advancements in medical technology and the rising average lifespan of the population, the importance of surface treatment technology for biometallic materials used in orthopedic implants is highlighted. Achieving stable mechanical attachment between the implant and human bone, specifically bone cell adhesion, is crucial. Without proper adhesion, issues such as inflammation and reduced load-bearing capacity can occur, leading to the need for implant reimplantation. Therefore, this paper focuses on creating a micro-groove pattern using a pulsed nanosecond laser on the surface of a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V), a biometallic material, to promote cell adhesion. To evaluate the effectiveness of the pattern in enhancing cell adhesion, MG-63 osteoblasts were cultured on the micro-groove patterned surface, and their adhesion and morphological changes were analyzed. This study confirms the potential of laser processing as a surface treatment method for biometallic materials.
