Enrichment of Electrochemically Active Bacteria Using a Three-Electrode Electrochemical Cell

  • Electrochemically active bacteria were successfully enriched in an electrochemical cell using a positively poised working electrode. The positively poised working electrode (+0.7 V vs. Ag/AgCl) was used as an electron acceptor for enrichment and growth of electrochemically active bacteria. When activated sludge and synthetic wastewater were fed to the electrochemical cell, a gradual increase in amperometric current was observed. After a period of time in which the amperometric current was stabilized (generally 8 days), linear correlations between the amperometric signals from the electrochemical cell and added BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) concentrations were established. Cyclic voltammetry of the enriched electrode also showed prominent electrochemical activity. When the enriched electrodes were examined with electron microscopy and confocal scanning laser microscopy, a biofilm on the enriched electrode surface and bacterium-like particles were observed. These experimental results indicate that the electrochemical system in this study is a useful tool for the enrichment of an electrochemically active bacterial consortium and could be used as a novel microbial biosensor.

Case Report of Radial Nerve Palsy Patients Treated with Additional Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture (중성어혈 약침치료를 병행한 요골신경마비 환자 치험 4례)

  • Objectives: This study was to investigate the clinical effect of additional Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture on radial nerve palsy patients. Methods & Results: The patients were hospitalized or outpatients in Department of traditional korean medical hospital, Dongshin University from 28th, Oct. 2009 to 25th, Aug, 2010. All patients were treated by additional Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture. To evaluate the wrist drop and numbness of fingers, coding result, Verbal numerical scale (VNS) were used. As the result, symptoms are improved remarkably according to improvement of coding result, VNS score. Conclusions: Patients were treated during 3.5 weeks in average. All cases were excellent results by additional Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture. But further studies are required to investigate exact effects.

  • A probabilistic assessment code, PRO-LOCA ver. 3.7 which was developed in an international co-operative research program, PARTRIDGE was evaluated by conducting sensitivity analysis. The effect of some variables such as simulation methods (adaptive sampling, iteration numbers, weld residual stress model), crack features(Poisson's arrival rate, maximum numbers of cracks, initial flaw size, fabrication flaws), operating and loading conditions(temperature, primary bending stress, earthquake strength and frequency), and inspection model(inspection intervals, detectable leak rate) on the failure probabilities of a surge line nozzle was investigated. The results of sensitivity analysis shows the remaining problems of the PRO-LOCA code such as the instability of adaptive sampling and unexpected trend of failure probabilities at an early stage.

  • Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected as one of more effective solutions for decreasing fault current instantaneously and various types of SFCLs have been developed to apply into real power system. Recently, the application of the SFCL in a power distribution system has been reported to be contributed to the suppression of the voltage sag as well as the limitation of the fault current. However, the suppressing effect of voltage sag by the SFCL depends on component of its impedance and its application location in a power distribution system considering the recloser-recloser coordination. This paper analyzed the voltage sag caused by recloser-recloser coordination in a power distribution system and the suppression of the voltage sag due to the application location of the SFCL in a power distribution system was discussed through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

  • Infantile hemangioendothelioma(IHE) of the liver is the most common vascular tumor in infants before the age of 6 months. It is a histologically benign tumor with potentially life-threatening complications. The clinical manifestations are variable, ranging from asymptomatic forms to intractable high-output heart failure. In addition, abdominal mass, intraperitoneal hemorrhage due to rupture of mass, respiratory distress, hematologic abnormalities and jaundice can occur. Diagnostic work-up is through doppler ultrasound sonography, computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging and angiography. Treatment consists of medical treatment, interventional therapy, surgical resection and liver transplantation. We experienced symptomatic IHE in a premature neonate who presented with high output heart failure and respiratory distress. Initial medical treatment and steroid therapy failed to improve his condition. Coil embolization of left hepatic artery resulted in improvement of respiratory symptoms. However, a left lobectomy was performed because the mass size was not decreased with development of collateral vessels. The infant was well, after a successful discharge from the hospital.

Application of Adenovirus-Mediated Human Telomerase Catalytic Subunit(hTERT) Gene Promoter in Ovarian Cancer Gene Therapy

  • Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein complex whose function is to add telomeric repeats to chromosomal ends. Telomerase consists of two essential components, telomerase RNA template (hTR) and catalytic subunit (hTERT). hTERT is expressed only in cells and tissues positive for telomerase activity, i.e., tumor and fetal cells. In this report, the possibility of utilization of the hTERT promoter in targeted cancer gene therapy was tested. The hTERT promoter was cloned in the replacement of the CMV promoter, and the HSV-TK gene was subcloned to be controlled by the hTERT gene promoter in the adenovirus shuttle plasmid. Then, the recombinant adenovirus Ad-hT-TK was constructed and was infected into normal and human gynecological cancer cell lines. The selective tumor specific cell death by Ad-hT-TK was identified through these experiments, showing that Ad-hT-TK could be used for targeted cancer gene therapy.

  • Kimura's disease is an angiolymphoid-proliferative disorder that manifests with benign subcutaneous swelling predominantly in the head and the neck. Kidney involvement, including proteinuria, occurs in 12-16% of patients with the disease, and 60-78% of such cases is nephrotic syndrome. Reported etiologies of nephrotic syndrome in Kimura's disease include membranous glomerulonephritis, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis, minimal-change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis and immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy. There have been only two case reports of IgA nephropathy in Kimura's disease, in 1998. In this report, we present a third case of IgA nephropathy associated with Kimura's disease.

The study about compilation of Euimunbogam(醫門寶鑑) and cronicles of Myoug-Shin Zhu(周命新) ("의문보감(醫門寶鑑)"의 편찬과 주명신의 행적에 대한 연구)

  • Objective : Euimunbogam(醫門寶鑑) is a synthetic medical book based on Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑), which was written by Myoung-Shin Zhu(周命新) in middle of Joseon era. And the book was published by Myoung-Seok Lee(李命錫) in 1918. This book has generally known as it's written in 1724 so far. But the life of Myoug-Shin Zhu is not well-known, and the year when Euimunbogam was compiled should be reconsidered. Method : We will find the historical records of Myoug-Shin Zhu through the close study of Joseon literatures. Result : Seungjeongwonilgi(承政院日記), Ilsungrock(日省錄), Taeuiwonseonsaengan(太醫院先生案), Yeolha diary(熱河日記), Yeonamgip(燕巖集), Euimunbogam show that Myoug-Shin Zhu was born in 1729 and he died in 1798. He worked as Ju-Bu(主簿) in HyeMinseo(惠民署) and Euiyakdongcham(醫藥同參) in Naeuiwon(內醫院). Conclusion : Myoug-Shin Zhu wrote Euimunbogam in 1784. And he was one of the famous physicians during the period between the king Young-Jo and Jung-Jo.

Natural conception rate following laparoscopic surgery in infertile women with endometriosis

  • Objective: To investigate the influence of laparoscopic surgery on the natural conception rate in infertile women with endometriosis during the first year after the operation. Methods: We retrospectively studied 43 infertile women with surgically proven endometriosis. The natural conception rate was investigated for the 12 months after the laparoscopy. Results: The overall pregnancy rate was 41.9% (18/43). 66.7% (12/18) and 94.4% (17/18) of the patients conceived within postoperative 3 months and 6 months, respectively. The spontaneous pregnancy rate was not associated with the severity of endometriosis or laparoscopic findings or the type of surgery. The pregnancy rate for stage IV was relatively low (20.0%) compared to stage I, II, and III (35.7%, 44.4%, and 53.3%, respectively), although it did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion: Conservative surgical treatment with laparoscopy and a prompt attempt at natural conception may be effective for infertile patients with endometriosis.

  • Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein complex, whose function is to add telomeric repeats $(TTAGGG)_n$ to chromosomal ends and is also known to play an important role in cellular immortalization. Telomerase is highly active in most tumor cells, yet not in normal cells. Therefore, it may have possible applications in cancer gene therapy. Telomerase consists of two essential components; a telomerase RNA template (hTR) and a catalytic subunit (hTERT). The current study attempted to inhibit the "open" part of the human telomerase RNA (hTR) with an antisense sequence-expressing adenovirus. It was found that the antisense telomerase adenovirus suppressed the telomerase activity, tumor cell growth, and survival in vitro. Furthermore, FACS analysis and TUNEL assay suggested that the reduce viability was mediated through the induction of apoptosis, indicating that this approach might be a useful method for suppressing cancer growth in targeted cancer gene therapy.
