This paper discussed hydrothermal reactivity of Ca(OH)2 and classified bituminous fly ashes which were collected at an electrostatic precipitator in coal fired power plant at 181$^{\circ}C$. The major products of hydrothermal reaction were tobermorite and hydrogrossularite because bituminous fly ashes contained Al2O3 content greater than 20 wt%. As increasing amount of Al2O3 content greater than 20 wt%. As increasing amount of Al2O3 in glass phases, formation of hydrogrossularite increased. Formation rate of crystalline tobermorite increased with content of finer particles, higher glass content and more Al2O3 in glass phases. There was a positive correlation between residue on 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sieve and hydrothermal reactivity of fly ash up to 3 hours. The hydrothermal reactivity of fly ash at 181$^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours was more affected by fineness than by glass content of fly ash.
Morphological control on hydroxyapatite crystals has attractive prospects in research to clarify the effects of crystal planes on biological performance. Hydrothermal processing is known as a typical type of processing for fabricating well-grown crystals with unique morphology. The purpose of the present study is to examine the feasibility of well-crystallized crystals with oriented structures through hydrothermal treatment of calcite. A single crystal of calcite was applied to hydrothermal treatment in a phosphate solution at $160^{\circ}C$. Rod-shaped hydroxyapatite crystals with micrometer-size were formed on the {100} face of calcite after treatment, while nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite crystals were formed on the (111). The hydroxyapatite crystals formed on each plane were not morphologically changed with increasing treatment periods. An oriented structure of rod-shaped hydroxyapatite was constructed after hydrothermal treatment of {100} planes on the calcite single, while such orientation was not observed on the (111) plane after the treatment. The layer of hydroxyapatite formed on the {100} plane was thicker than that of the (111) plane. The {100} plane of calcite shows a higher reactivity than that of the (111) plane, which results in rapid crystal growth of hydroxyapatite. The difference in the morphology of the formed hydroxyapatite was governed by the reactivity of each crystal plane exposed to the surrounding solution.
This paper addresses the hydrothermal reactivity of blast furnace slag and fly ash with lime, respectively. The test conditions were CaO-to-$SiO_2$ ratio (C/S), autoclaving temperature ($140{\circ}C$ and $180{\circ}C$) and time (20 to 60h). The study was carried out in terms of the hydrothermal reactivity between $SiO_2$ contained in each hydraulic material and (pure) lime and the compressive strength of autoclaved specimens. Porosity measurement and the XRD analysis were also made in order to ascertain the hydraulicity of the siliceous materials. Compressive strength of the specimens was interpreted in terms of porosity and the reactivity of CaO and $SiO_2$. And the XRD analysis showed the C/S change of the hydrates in the course of autoclaving process. $SiO_2$ in the blast furnace slag was more reactive with CaO than that in the fly ash and consequently the blast furnace slag specimens resulted in much higher compressive strength. A maximum compressive strength of $807kg/cm^2$ was obtained for the blast furnace slag at the autoclaving condition of $180{\circ}C$ and 40 h, while only $397kg/cm^2$ was maximally to achieve with fly ash.
Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 powders were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis. Using soluble salts such as Pb(NO3)2, TiCl4 and ZrOCl2$.$8H2O and oxide such as PbO and TiO2 as starting materials, PZT powder was hydrothermally synthesized at the temperature range between 150$^{\circ}C$ and 200$^{\circ}C$. The result showed that reactivity by alkali was decreased in the sequence of Pb(NO3)2, TiCl4, ZrOCl2, PbO, TiO2 and ZrO2. Using the first three soluble salts, PZT powder was synthesiged at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. In PbO-TiCl4-ZrOCl2 system, PZT powder was synthesized at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 8rs. In Pb(NO3)2-TiO2-ZrOCl2 system, PZT powder was synthesized at 150$^{\circ}C$ for 16hrs, in PbO-TiO2-ZrOCl2 system, the powder was synthesized at 200$^{\circ}C$ for 8hrs.

This is an overview paper reporting our most recent work on processing and microstructure of nano-structured oxides and their photoluminescence and photo-catalysis properties. Zinc oxide and related transition metal oxides such as vanadium pentoxide and titanium dioxide were produced by a combination of magnetron sputtering, hydrothermal growth and atmosphere controlled heat treatment. Special morphology and microstructure were created including nanorods arrays, core-brushes, nano-lollipops and multilayers with very large surface area. These structures showed special properties such as much enhanced photoluminescence and chemical reactivity. The photo-catalytic properties have also been promoted significantly. It is believed that two factors contributed to the high reactivity: the large surface area and the interaction between different oxides. The transition metal oxides with different band gaps have much enhanced photoluminescence under laser stimulation. Use of these complex oxide structures as electrodes can also improve the energy conversion efficiency of solar cells. The mixed oxide complex may provide a promising way to high-efficiency photo emitting materials and photo-catalysts.
The lignite and bituminous coal are mainly used in thermal power plant. They exhaust green house gas (GHG) such as CO2, and become deplete, thus require alternative energy resources. To solve the problem, the hydrochar production from biomass is suggested. In this study, both hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and solvothermal carbonization (STC) were used to produce high quality hydrochar. To improve the reactivity of water solvent process in HTC, STC process was conducted using ethanol solution. The experiments were carried out by varying the solid-liquid ratio (1:4, 1:8, 1:12), reaction temperature (150~300 ℃) and retention time (15~120 min) using kenaf. The characteristic of hydrochar was analyzed by EA, FT-IR, TGA and SEM. The carbon content of hydrochar increased up to 48.11%, while the volatile matter decreased up to 39.34%. Additionally, the fuel characteristic of hydrochar was enhanced by reaction temperature. The results showed that the kenaf converted to a fuel by HTC and STC process, which can be used as an alternative energy source of coal.
In the present study, nano-size powders of ternary ferrites, $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$, as the potential catalysts of $CO_2$decomposition, were prepared by the wet processing of hydrothermal synthesis and coprecipitation method, and the catalyzing effects of impregnation of the noble metals, Pt and Pd, onto $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$for the $CO_2$decomposition were investigated. XRD results of the synthesized ferrites showed a typical spinel structure of ferrite and the particle size was very small as about 6~10 nm. BET surface area of the ternary ferrites was not affected by the impregnation of Pt and Pd. The reactivity of the $CO_2$decomposition to carbon was improved by the impregnation of the noble metals of Pd and Pt. The effect of Pd-impregnation on the $CO_2$decomposition rate was higher than Pt-impregnation.
Recently, consumption of magnesium alloys has increased especially in the 3C (computer, communication, camera) and automobile industries. The structural application of magnesium alloys has many advantages due to their low densities, high specific strength, excellent damping and anti-eletromagnetic properties, and easy recycling. However, practical application of these alloys has been limited to narrow uses of mild condition, because they are inferior in corrosion resistance and wear resistance due to their high chemical reactivity and low hardness. Various wet and dry processes are being used or are under development to enhance alloy surface properties. Various conversion coating and anodizing methods have been developed in a view of eco-friendly concept. The conventional technologies, such as diffusion coating, sol-gel coating, hydrothermal treatment, and organic coating, are expected to be newly applicable to magnesium alloys. Surface treatments for metallic luster or coloring are suggested using the control of the micro roughness. This report reviews the recent R&D trends and achievements in surface treatment technologies for magnesium alloys.
We report the growth and enhanced photoelectrochemcial (PEC) water-splitting reactivity of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets on TiO2 nanowires. TiO2 nanowires with lengths of ~1.5 ~ 2.0 ㎛ and widths of ~50~300 nm are synthesized on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates at 180 ℃ using hydrothermal methods with Ti(C4H9O)4. Few-layer MoS2 nanosheets with heights of ~250 ~ 300 nm are vertically grown on TiO2 nanowires at a moderate growth temperature of 300 ℃ using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The MoS2 nanosheets on TiO2 nanowires exhibit typical Raman and ultraviolet-visible light absorption spectra corresponding to few-layer thick MoS2. The PEC performance of the MoS2 nanosheet/TiO2 nanowire heterostructure is superior to that of bare TiO2 nanowires. MoS2/TiO2 heterostructure shows three times higher photocurrent than that of bare TiO2 nanowires at 0.6 V. The enhanced PEC photocurrent is attributed to improved light absorption of MoS2 nanosheets and efficient charge separation through the heterojunction. The photoelectrode of the MoS2/TiO2 heterostructure is stably sustained during on-off switching PEC cycle.

Layered double hydroxide is synthesized and used in the arsenate adsorption experiments. The shapes of two materials analyzed by TEM showed that unheated material is amorphous in shape, micro-sized while heat treated material showed more crystallized in shape and nano-sized. X-ray diffraction showed this result more obvious. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption results showed that the materials are mesoporous and the specific surface area of the heated material is more than two times larger than the unheated material. Adsorption of As(V) is expected to be more in the heated material than the unheated material. Kinetic test of arsenate adsorption showed very fast reaction. The reactivity of Fe with As(V) might be the main factor for this result. The reaction kinetic of the heated and the unheated materials were similar and even the adsorption isotherms showed similar results for both materials. Both materials are found to be useful in remediation of soil and groundwater polluted by waste mine tailings consist of high concentration of As(V).
