Output Characteristic Analysis of Small Hydropower Plant (소수력발전소의 출력특성 분석)

  • The output performance characteristics for surveyed sites were analyzed, using developed model. It consists of two main parts, the deciding flow duration characteristic of river and performance prediction model to estimate the output characteristics of small hydropower plants. As a result, It was found that the flowrate concerning with 25% of time ratio on flow duration curve can be selected to design flowrate of small hydropower plants, and the output characteristics of small hydropower plants having overflow dam are different from large scale hydropower plants.

  • The world began to search for new energy sources with increasing energy demand. Renewable energy sources are as hydropower important for alternative energy. Countries with high hydroelectric potentials continue to work to utilize hydroelectric power plants in the most efficient way. Pumped storage hydropower plants are an important investment to meet the growing energy needs at peak times and to store energy. Although it produces energy in many countries, pumped storage hydropower plants have not begun to be built in Turkey which has high hydroelectric potential. A new era will be opened for energy production in Turkey where a large number of pumped storage hydropower plants projects are in study phase with the construction of pumped storage hydropower plants and first nuclear power plant.

  • Hydropower is now changing its role from the energy generator into the most powerful and reliable tool for stabilizing the electrical network, especially under the increase of intermittent power sources like wind-power and solar-power. Although the hydropower plants are the most robust generating facilities, they are not immune from unexpected severe incidents having long downtime, considerable restoration cost and sometimes fatalities. The present paper provides some study results about severe incidents in the conventional hydropower plants, mainly about the flood, fire and electro-mechanical troubles, except for the incidents of civil facilities. It also provides some possible scenarios which may lead some measures how to avoid such incidents. Finally, it provides some comprehensible recommendations to avoid severe incidents based on experiences.

  • The developments of small hydropower plants in korea have been delayed by rising construction cost/low feasibility, local people's disagreement even though the capacity of water resources are enough. However, the recent raising of electricity purchasing price, the government's enlarging plan of small hydropower plants caused the newly development to be accelerated. In this paper, the design of remote control of small hydropower plants are proposed for better economy and easy control. The operation and monitoring of power plants are planned based on One(1)-man control from the central control room of regional area water works/ operating station and engineering station multipurpose dam offices with the equipments of OS, RTU(PLC), KT leased lines, WMPS, CSU and etc.

  • Small hydropower, one of renewable energies, is the clean energy which emits no carbonic acid gas. It has noting to do with global warming. It is a useful resource to contribute to the dispersion of power. Because of ballooning oil prices, the need for small hydropower is increasing. Recently small hydropower development using dams, small rivers, reservoirs, water pipes, sewage treatment plants and cool ing water of thermal power plants is conducting.   • Feasibility assessment for small hydropower plants using diversion weirs located in stream for agricultural purpose has been studied. The model, which can predict flow duration characteristic of stream, was developed to analyze the inflow caused from rainfall. And another model to predict hydrologic performance for small hydropower plants is established. Preliminary survey was performed identifying several candidate sites, and two sites were selected finally for actual site reconnaissance. During the course of site survey, generating capacity, construction and equipment cost, and payback through life time of each sites were calculated for economical feasibility analysis. The results of this study have estimated that the small hydropower plants using diversion weirs for agricultural purpose may offer better opportunities in future with increasing fuel cost and nation's energy policy.

  • Small hydropower is one of the many types of new and renewable energy, which South Korea is planning to develop, as the country is abundant in endowed resources. In order to fully utilize small hydropower resources, there is a need for greater precision in quantifying small hydropower resources and establish an environment in which energy sources can be discovered using the small hydropower geographic information system. This study has given greater precision to calculating annual electricity generation and installed capacity of small hydropower plants of 117 medium basins by inquiring into average annual rainfall, basin area and runoff coefficient, which is anticipated to promote small hydropower resources utilization. Small hydropower geographic information system was also established by additionally providing base information on quantified small hydropower resources and analysis function and small hydropower generator status, rivers, basin, rainfall gauging station, water level gauging station etc.. Established system of GIS small hydropower energy can be used gather basic information for positive applications of small hydropower energy nationwide.

  • This paper provides how to establish an integrated plan for LE (life extension) and MD (modernization) of aged hydropower plants. The methodology is developed through review of overseas/domestic LE/MD histories, investigation of the previous overseas methodologies and consideration of domestic practices. The methodology includes reviews of the various factors such as condition, operation and maintenance history, up-to-date technology, and economic benefit. In order to establish the life extension/modernization plan, the methodology is applied to the domestic aged hydropower plants. Finally, priority rankings and draft practice plans for LE/MD are derived.

  • This paper introduces a system to detect and diagnose anomalies in pumped storage hydropower plants. We collect data from various types of sensors, including those monitoring temperature, vibration, and power. The data are classified according to the operation modes (pump and turbine operation modes) and normalized to remove the influence of the external environment. To detect anomalies and diagnose their types, we adopt a multivariate normal distribution analysis by learning the distribution of the normal data. The feasibility of the proposed system is evaluated using actual monitoring data of a pumped storage hydropower plant. The proposed system can be used to implement condition monitoring systems for other plants through modifications.
