Reservoir sedimentation is one of the major concerns for sustainable reservoir operation. Since sediment concentration of the rivers in the Himalayan Mountain is very high, a proper sediment management scheme is necessary. This paper presents long-term reservoir sedimentation and sediment flushing based on the gate operation. Focused on the reservoir to be constructed for the Patrind hydropower project in Pakistan, 4 different flushing scenarios were proposed in this study to prevent successive sedimentation. By extending flushing period and by increasing the flushing discharge for 2 times, the flushing rate increases up to 53.2% and 43.6% in proportion to flushing period and discharge, respectively. Based on the simulation presented in this paper, it is expected to establish efficient sediment management plan to increase hydro power generation and sediment flushing simultaneously.

Sedimentation is a natural process that occurs in all reservoirs. Sedimentation problem reduces the storage capacity of the reservoir and limits its ability to provide water for various uses, such as irrigation, hydropower generation, and flood control. Therefore, predicting reservoir sedimentation is important for ensuring the efficient operation and sedimentation management of a reservoir and . In this study, the HECRAS model was applied to predict longitudinal distribution of deposited sediment in the Pleikrong reservoir to 2050. Different scenarios was considered: (i) no climate change, (ii) climate change (under two emissions scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), and (iii) climate change and land use change (followed land use planning of the watershed). The computation results with different scenarios were analyses and compared. The results show that the reservoir reduced storage volume's rate and sedimentation proceed toward to the dam in the case of climate change is faster than in the case of no climate change. Analyses also indicates that following the land used planning could also improve the long-term problem of the reservoir sedimentation. The outcomes of this study will be helpful for a sustainable plan of sediment management for the Pleikrong reservoir.
Hwang River in South Korea, has experienced channel adjustments due to dam construction. Hapcheon main dam and re-regulation dam. The reach below the re-regulation dam (45 km long) changed in flow regime, channel width, bed material distribution, vegetation expansion, and island formation after dam construction. The re-regulation dam dramatically reduced annual peak flow from 654.7 $m^3$/s to 126.3 $m^3$/s and trapped the annual 591 thousand $m^3$ of sediment load formerly delivered from the upper watershed since the completion of the dam in 1989. An analysis of a time series of aerial photographs taken in 1982, 1993, and 2004 showed that non-vegetated active channel width narrowed an average of 152 m (47% of 1982) and non-vegetated active channel area decreased an average of 6.6 km2 (44% of 1982) between 1982 and 2004, with most narrowing and decreasing occurring after dam construction. The effects of daily pulses of water from peak hydropower generation and sudden sluice gate operations are investigated downstream of Hapcheon Dam in South Korea. The study reach is 45 km long from the Hapcheon re-regulation Dam to the confluence with the Nakdong River. An analysis of a time series of aerial photographs taken in 1982, 1993, and 2004 showed that the non-vegetated active channel width narrowed an average of 152 m (47% reduction since 1982). The non-vegetated active channel area also decreased an average of 6.6 $km^2$ (44% reduction since 1982) between 1982 and 2004, with most changes occurring after dam construction. The average median bed material size increased from 1.07 mm in 1983 to 5.72 mm in 2003, and the bed slope of the reach decreased from 0.000943 in 1983 to 0.000847 in 2003. The riverbed vertical degradation is approximately 2.6 m for a distance of 20 km below the re-regulation dam. It is expected from the result of the unsteady sediment transport numerical model (GSTAR-1D) steady simulations that the thalweg elevation will reach a stable condition around 2020. The model also confirms the theoretical prediction that sediment transport rates from daily pulses and flood peaks are 21 % and 15 % higher than their respective averages.
Ongoing huge Bakun Hydropower project is including the construction of a 210 m height hydroelectric rockfill dam with an installed capacity of 2,520 MW and a power transmission system connecting to the existing networks between Sarawak and peninsula Malaysia. In order to allow the main dam construction during the dry season, the Ballui river will have to be detoured through 3 concrete lined diversion tunnels with an internal diameter of 12 m and a length of 1,400 m each. The geology of Bakun site belongs to the several thousand meters thick Belaga formation deposited from the late Cteteceous to the early Teriary in the Northwest Borneo geosyncline. The orientation of the bedding plane, strike at N55$^{\circ}$E to N70$^{\circ}$E and dip at 50$^{\circ}$SE to 70$^{\circ}$SE, is developed uniformly in Bakun sedimentary rocks. Rock mechanical characteristics of Bakun site have been classified into 4 rock mass types(RMT) depending on the degree of weathering and the occurrence of rock jointing with RMR. Graywacke(Sandstone) as well as Shale can take place together in the same rock mass type if their rock mass properties are similar. It was summarized the rock support type and support system design of underground diversion tunnels in view of rock mechanics.

The conflicts among nations surrounding international rivers are intensifying as worldwide water shortage is getting worse. The Mekong River is a representative trans-boundary river in Southeast Asia shared by six countries, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. As the economy grows, hydroelectric power has become a major power supply source to meet the increasing power demand of the these countries. However, the construction of dams on the Mekong River is controversial because hydroelectric power in the river upstream has a negative impact not only on the whole river ecosystem but also on residents' life around downstream, in particular. In order to understand the controversy arising from international rivers, it is necessary to take into account different positions of countries sharing it. However, studies on the position of a specific country to Mekong hydropower have been conducted mainly focusing on China and Laos. Therefore, this study tried to study the position of Cambodian government which is located downstream of the Mekong River and is likely to bear costs rather than to gain benefits from hydroelectric power generation. What is the attitude of the Cambodian government to the hydroelectric development of the upper Mekong and what is the reason for that? The study confirmed the Cambodian government's support for dam construction on the Mekong River. It also figured out influential factors on the formation of such a position as follows: 1) economic asymmetry with China, 2) power dependency and geographical asymmetry in Laos, and 3) importance of hydroelectric power in Cambodia.
There are not many practical measures to solve a water conflict, when a hydromorphologically asymmetric situation in international rivers exists whereby downstream users may not affect upstream users but upstream users do cause downstream impacts. In taking advantage of this merit, North Korea has built Imnam Dam in upstream of North Han River and uses water for trans-basin hydropower generation. As an impact of this dam South Korean' area as a downstream user has been suffered from water deficit and dry river. It is very critical for South Korea to solve a key problem such as water allocation for water supply and river maintenance. Therefore, this study is aim to suggest alternatives for equitable water allocation in consideration of special circumstances between the South and the North. For this, reviewing the allocation methods of water rights is carried using lessons obtained from international river cases. The results show that the minimum desired streamflow is calculated at 7.3 $m^3/sec$; water budget analysis by the equitable distribution of streamflows at the border line of the North Han River, the difference in water supply deficiency is at 3.7 $m^3/sec$ before and after Imnam Dam; in the determined distribution method, the difference in water deficiency is at 11.38 $m^3/sec$. These results show that South Korea should be secured 11.38 $m^3/sec$ from North Korean's Imnam Dam in respective of water use right and sound river maintenance.
Recently, the extreme drought is often occurred due to the global warming and the serious weather changes. Also, the problems of the water pollution In the developed areas, the oppositions from people in the upper stream area and water concession from the local governments affect the national request to get more clean water resources in upper stream of the undeveloped areas. It also brings on the necessity of recognition for water supply managements. Therefore, as the water demand is rapidly changes in the metropolitan areas, the capability of water supply from the north Han river basin dams should be appropriately investigated. In this study, we developed a simulation system using STELLA (equation omitted) software environment, a shared vision model, to analyze the possibility of the stable water supply from north Han river basin dams. Also, three different rules are applied on this model by dividing the water level to minimum(Rule 1), medium(Rule 2) and maximum(Rule 3). Using the rules, the safety yield changes are analyzed for dam rule curve of the reservoir and hydropower release.

This study is on the gate operation of dams, which are for the hydropower and multipurpose in Han River Basin, considering the safety under the emergency. The results of the study on the safety of dams in Han River Basin associated with the gate operation of dams against the design flood flow and the combined inflow are as follows; 1) The empirical formula (1) can be used for gate operation with the informations of reservoir's water level and the inflow. 2) The applicability of the multiple regression formula (2) among the gate opening area, inflow, water level, and outflow is assured. 3) From the safety analysis of dams for the emergency by the procedures developed in this study, six dams are safe except Soyanggang, Euiam, and Cheongpyung Dam, but the above three dams can be safe with the lowering of the starting water level of gate opening by the pre-discharges.
The 3S Basin is described as an important contributor in terms of many aspects in the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia. However, the 3S Basin has been suffering adverse consequences of changing discharge and sediment, which are derived from farming, deforestation, hydropower dam construction, climate change, and soil erosion. Consequently, a large population and ecology system that live along the 3S Basin are seriously affected. Accordingly, the calculating and simulating discharge and sediment become ever more urgent. There are many methods to simulate discharge and sediment. However, most of them are designed only during a single rainfall event and they require many kinds of data. Therefore, this study applied a Catchment-scale Soil Erosion model (C-SEM) to simulate discharge and sediment in the 3S Basin. The simulated results were judged with others references's data and the observed discharge of Strung Treng station, which is located in the mainstream and near the outlet of the 3S Basin. The results revealed that the 3S Basin distributes 31% of the Mekong River Basin's total discharge. In addition, the simulated sediment results at the 3S Basin's outlet also substantiated the importance of the 3S Basin to the Mekong River Basin. Furthermore, the results are also useful for the sustainable management practices in the 3S Basin, where the sediment data is unavailable.
