  • Optical fiber sensor is a subject which has been attracted considerable attention in recent years. Detection of sound pressure with optical fibers positioned in the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is presented in this paper. A fiber length of the order of 150m is wounded is made by hollow cylinder type. To increase the sound signal 3${\times}3$ directional coupler is used. Fiber optic hydrophone is the underwater tank with 2kHz sound source. Finally, it is shown that the fiber optic hydeophone can stably detec 2kHz sound.

  • Optical sensing techniques have been associated with high sensitivity and precise measurements and attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, two channels TDM(Time Division Multiplexing) fiber-optic hydrophone array for the underwater applications was fabricated and their acoustic characteristics were investigated by using the acoustic water tank. A fiber length of the order of 100m is wounded at the hollow cylinder type aluminum mandrel. An unbalanced interferometer (discrete Mach-Zehnder type) was used. Sound detection performance is tested in the underwater tank with 2kHz continuous sound source. Finally, it is shown that two channels TDM(Time Division Multiplexing) fiber-optic hydrophone array can detect 2kHz sound stably.

  • This paper describes the application of a coupled finite element-boundary element method to obtain the steady-state response of a hydrophone. The particular structure considered is a flooded piezoelectric spherical shell. The hydrophone is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce an incident plane acoustic pressure onto the outer surface of the sonar spherical shell to electrical potentials on inner and outer surfaces of the shell. The acoustic field formed from the scattered sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the shell caused by the externally incident acoustic pressure is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.

  • A technology of ultrasonic biotelemetry for tracking fish behavior is investigated. The ultrasonic biotelemetry system is constituted by a transmitter and a receiving system. Because a pinger was mainly used for the transmitter, the capability for pinger to possess was investigated and the efficient usage for pinger was examined. A source pressure level and a frequency were synthetically examined so that pinger could realize small size, a light weight, and a long life time. The receiving system is divided roughly into directional hydrophone systems and acoustic positioning systems by the receiving method. The directional hydrophone system is divided into single beam and multiple beam with the number of hydrophone, and the acoustic positioning systems is divided into LBL (Long Base Line), SBL (Short Base Line), and SSBL (Super Short Base Line) on the basis of base line. The present situation, the merits and demerits, and the principle of each receiving method were investigated in detail, and the efficient usage for each receiving method were examined.

  • Recently, fiber optic hydrophone is a subject which has attracted as a underwater acoustic sensor. In this paper, a length of optical fiber is bonded to an end-capped hollow cylinder of some elastic material, e. g. aluminum and glass-pyres. The normalized sensitivity is derived according to the direction of polarization. Derived sensitivity equations are simulated for two different mandrel materials. The results are also compared to the McMahon's results which calculated for an average Pockel coefficient. Based on the numerical simulation normalized sensitivity is propotional to the inner to outer diameter ratio.

  • An underwater sound surveillance system detects and tracks enemy ships in real-time using hydrophone arrays, in which seabed-mounted sensor arrays play a pivotal role. In this paper the conceptual design of seabed-mounted, cylindrical hydrophone arrays for use in shallow coastal waters is performed via finite element calculations. To stabilize the receiving characteristics under the ocean ambient noise, a technique for whitening the ambient noise spectrum using a metal baffle is proposed. Optimization of the array configuration is performed to achieve the directivity in the vertical and azimuthal directions. And the effects of the sonar dome shape and material on the structural vibration and sound scattering properties are studied. It is demonstrated that a robust hydrophone array, having a sensitivity deviation less than 4 dB over the frequency range of interest, can be obtained through the whitening of the ambient noise, the optimization of the array configuration, and the design of acoustically transparent sonar domes.

  • There are many dispute with a construction due to such environment problem as vibration and noise. Generally, we have a standard for acceptance level in land. But we have not a sufficient standard for acceptance level or guide line in underwater sound. In other countries, a acceptance level or guide line in underwater sound has been suggested. Especially the management criterion of underwater noise for fish has bee suggested using the measurement data (peak pressure, rms, energy and SEL) by a hydrophone. In Korea, there is no management criterion of underwater noise for fish. This study suggested the management criteria of underwater noise for fish based on the measured data by a hydrophone.

  • One of good DF(Direction Finding) methods is based on TDOA(Time Difference of Arrival) estimation when finding underwater moving target. For small DF error, high time resolution A/D(Analog-to-digital) conversion board and long baseline are needed. But the result of sea trial about close-range and high speed moving target, spatial correlation coefficient and appeared poor properties below 0.3 when hydrophone arrangement are separated over 6 ${\lambda}$ because of underwater fading channel. And we also find out that the distance between hydrophone should be under 4 ${\lambda}$ apart to take advantage of spatial correlation coefficient gain and performance of DF in underwater moving channel environments.
