  • Wheel test and potentiodynamic polarization methods were used to evaluate the relative effectiveness of some hydrogen sulfide corrosion inhibitors for the wet gas pipeline API 5L grade X 65 steel. Five commercially corrosion inhibitors have been studied in the deoxygenated produced water solutions containing 10 ppm and 100 ppm of hydrogen sulfide. Based on the experiment results the steel corrosion inhibition mechanism in discussed and two most effective corrosion inhibitors are selected.

  • In this study an optimization of the preparation conditions of activated carbon with a ternary metal ion material to treat $H_2S$, which is classified as a representative odor substance, was carried out. For a metal ion material for enhancing the adsorption performance of hydrogen sulfide, performance enhancement was confirmed by combining Li and Fe or a ternary combination (K, Li, Fe) based on KI, which is a substance promoting hydrogen sulfide adsorption performance. Also, it was determined by XRD analysis that the reaction of each active substance with $H_2S$ was because of binding. The adsorption performance increased more than 3 times with heat treatment of the adsorbent with nitrogen compared with heat treatment with air. The maximum adsorption constant ($q_m$) value of the optimum adsorbent was 97.07, which is 6 times higher than that of the existing K-based impregnated activated carbon. It was confirmed that the objective adsorption amount ($0.3g\;g^{-1}$) was secured by an equilibrium between the mass transfer rate and adsorption rate. From the results, it was confirmed that the performance improvement was noticeable even when activated carbon with a reagent grade activated carbon particle size was modified. It was confirmed that the adsorption performance exists at high relative humidity levels of 60 and 100%, and the optimized preparation can be applied to a wet process such as a scrubber downstream.

  • This study was carried out to find deodorization management method of the efflux from swine slurry treated by thermophilic aerobic oxidation reactor. Three kinds of deodorization methods in Lab-scale reactors, were used in this experiment; No treatment, air injection treatment(50$m\ell$ air/min. $\ell$) and inoculumn of photrophic bacteria treatement(108 cell(Most probable number, MPN)/$m\ell$). The concentration of volatile fatty acids(VFAs), hydrogen sulfide(H2S), and ammonia(NH3) were analyzed during the treatment period(50 days). The major results obtained as follows. 1. Air injection method to efflux showed very high removal effect on malodorants such as VFAs, hydrogen sulfide(H2B). But ammonia(NH3) was emitted to much. 2. PTB inoculum method was also effective in removal of malodorants, VFAs, Hydrogen sulfide(H2S), when it was applied to the efflux. 3. We found that the concentrations of malodorants, VFAs, H2S, NH3 had some relatinships with the pH, ORP, BOD in the efflux.

  • In this study, we investigated the gas chromatography (GC) and pulsed flame photometric detection (PFPD) system for the analysis of four major reduced S compounds including hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S)$; methyl mercaptan ($CH_3SH$); dimethyl sulfide (DMS); and dimethyl disulfide(DMDS) contained in environmental samples. To analyze these compounds in high concentration range (above ppb level), we developed a high mode analytical setting with the loop-injection system. By contrast, we also established a low mode setting for the analysis of low concentration samples (ppt-level samples from ambient air) by the combination with thermal desorption unit(TDU). Comparative analysis of both settings revealed that relative detection properties of four S compounds are systematic enough. The results of high mode analysis indicated that the patterns were systematic among compounds: H2S exhibited the lowest sensitivity, while DMBS showed the strongest one. The results were also compared in terms of sensitivity reductions for all compounds by dividing slope ratios between low and high mode system. Although low mode system exhibited significant reductions on the order of a few tens times, their detection characteristics were highly consistent as it was shown in the high mode setting. To learn more about absolute and relative relations between two different modes of S analysis, future studies may have to be directed to cover more complicated nature of GC/PFPD performance. Hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$) was over in summer about low level of olfactory sense 410 ppt, Methyl mercaptan(C$H_3SH$) was over in apring and summer about low level of olfactory sense 70, Dimethyl sulfide(DMS) was not over in four season about low level of olfactory sense 2,200 ppt. Carbon disulfide($CS_2$) was not over in four deason about Tow level of olfactory sense 210,000, Dimethyl disulfide(DMDS) was not over in summer about low level of olfactory sense2,000.

  • The main object of this study was to offer information about incoming waste in landfill and to evaluate biochemical methane and hydrogen sulfide potentials of landfill wastes. We examined brick, soil, mixed waste (C&D waste and MSW) samples for the study. The leaching experiments showed that BOD, COD and sulfate were determined in the range of 0~18,816 mg/kg, 85~21,100 mg/kg and 160~1,205 mg/kg, respectively in 6hr extraction test. An accumulated extraction tests for 140day were determined BOD 226~197,219 mg/kg, COD 436~242,588 mg/kg and Sulfate 1,090~25,140 mg/kg. Also, BMP (biochemical methane potential) tests were carried out to examine methane and hydrogen sulfide yields for the 3 different wastes. As a result, methane yield was determined to 262.68 mL $CH_4/g$ VS of MSW and 0~17.75 mL $CH_4/g$ VS in brick, soil and C&D waste. Higher hydrogen sulfide yield was observed to 0.079mL $H_2S/g$ VS in C&D waste. This result indicate that brick and soil could be sources of sulfate, and higher production of hydrogen sulfide could be odor problem and inhibitor of methane production.

  • Biofiltration of polluted gas streams contained $H_2S$ was studied. The experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale reactor with a porous ceramic media inoculated with sulfur oxidizing bacterium, TAS which was isolated from activiated sludge. The concentration of $H_2S$ in the inlet gas varied from 109 to 3,841 ppm, at the various space velocities(SV) of 50 $h^{-1}$ to 250 $h^{-1}$. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effects of such parameters as pH, concentration of sulfate ion and retention time on the pressure drop and maximum elimination capacity. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ decreased as the $H_2S$ concentration or gas velocity increased in the inlet gas. Pressure drop was insignificant in this system. The maximum elimination capacity could reach up to 16.35g-S/kg-dry packing material/day.

  • In this study, the concentrations of reduced S compounds (including hydrogen sulfide (H$_2$S); methyl mercaptan ($CH_3$SH); dimethyl sulfide (($CH_3$)$_2$S); carbon disulfide (CS$_2$); and dimethyl disulfide (($CH_3$)$_2$S$_2$) were determined from landfill gas (LFG) in three municipal landfill sites in the two cities of Gwang Ju (GJ) and Jeju (JJ), Korea. The S gas concentrations measured in these landfill sites were found to be dominated by H$_2$S with its mean concentration of 850 ppm from 10 LFG samples. Both absolute and relative dominance of H$_2$S was seen to be significant in most LFG samples, except those collected from very old and inactive landfills. Unlike the pattern of H$_2$S, other S gases were typically observed at much reduced concentration levels (a few ppm or less) as follows: DMS (3.5); $CH_3$SH (1.3); CS$_2$(1.2); and DMDS (0.02 ppm). If compared equally in mass concentration unit (mg m$^{-3}$ ), H$_2$S generally explained far above 90% of all S gas masses determined concurrently. Moreover, as its mass concentration commonly exceeds those of the major aromatic VOC components in LFG (like benzene and toluene), it appeared to be one of the most dominant gaseous components emitted as LFG in a quantitative sense.

  • A packed bed of volcanic rock was used as deodorizing material to remove hydrogen sulfide($H_2$S) from air in a laboratory-scale column, and was inoculated with Thiobacillus sp. as $H_2S$ oxidizer. The effects of volcanic rock particle size distribution on system pressure drop were examined. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effect of $H_2S$ inlet concentration and CBCT(Empty Bed Contact Time) on $H_2S$ elimination. The pressure drop for particles of size range from 5.6 to 10 mm was 14 mm$H_2S$/m at a representative gas velocity of 0.25m/s. Biofilter using scoria and Thiobacillus sp. could get the stable removal efficiencies more than 99.9% under $H_2S$ inlet concentrations in the range from 30 to 1,100ppm at a constant gas flow rate of $15.2{\ell}$/min. $H_2S$ removal efficiencies greater than 99% were observed as long as EBCT was longer than 8sec at the 250ppm of $H_2S$ inlet concentration. When EBCT was reduced to 5.5 sec, $H_2S$ removal efficiency decreased by about 12 percent. The maximum $H_2S$ elimination capacity was determined to be 269g-$H_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$.

  • This study aimed to assess the effects of exogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on abdominal aorta coarctation (AAC) induced myocardial fibrosis (MF) and autophagy in rats. Forty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control group, AAC group, AAC + H2S group, and H2S control group. After a model of rats with AAC was built surgically, AAC + H2S group and H2S group were injected intraperitoneally with H2S (100 µmol/kg) daily. The rats in the control group and the AAC group were injected with the same amount of PBS. We observed that H2S can improve left ventricular function and the deposition of myocardial collagen fibers, inhibit pyroptosis, down-regulate the expression of P-eif2α in myocardial tissue, and inhibit cell autophagy by activating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT1 signaling pathway (p < 0.05). In addition, angiotensin II (1 µM) H9c2 cardiomyocytes were injured in vitro experiments, and it was also observed that pyroptosis was inhibited after H2S (400 µmol/kg) intervention, the expression of P-eif2α in cardiomyocytes was significantly down-regulated, and the PI3K/AKT1 signaling pathway was activated at the same time. Therefore, increasing the expression of P-eif2α reverses the activation of the PI3K/AKT1 signaling pathway by H2S. In conclusion, these findings suggest that exogenous H2S can ameliorate MF in rats with AAC by inhibiting pyroptosis, and the mechanism may be associated with inhibiting the phosphorylation of eif2α and activating the PI3K/AKT1 signaling pathway to inhibit excessive cell autophagy.

  • The objective of the research project is to develop the hybrid deodorizer for the removal of residual harmful gases generating during pretreatment process of biogas. This hybrid deodorizer is capable of treating harmful gases that contains hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), ammonia ($NH_3$) and other odor substances. This hybrid deodorizer reduced the hydrogen sulfide content from approximately 150~200 ppm to less than 16 ppm. These residual harmful gases were effectively removed in the effluent, achieving up to 97% removal of $H_2S$ and 94% removal of $NH_3$ after treatment using hybrid deodorizer.
