  • In oil-filled equipment such as transformers, partial discharge or local overheating will precede a final shutdown. Accompanied with such problems is a decomposition of insulating material into gases, which are dissolved into the transformer oil. The gases dissolved in oil can be separated with some membranes based on the differences in permeability of membranes to different gases. This paper discuss the permeability characteristics of several membranes for separation hydrogen gas in oil. With result of this paper, it may become possible to detect fault-related gases from transformer oil and predict incipient failures in the future.

  • In order to produce high-yield pitch-based activated carbon, pitch was synthesized by blending pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar. Pitch was synthesized by varying the amount of coal-tar from 0~20% compared to PFO and reacting at 380~420 ℃ for 3 h. The synthesized pitch had a softening point between 80 and 260 ℃, and yields ranged from 10 to 40%. At all synthesis temperatures, as the coal-tar blending ratio increased, the yield increased and the softening point decreased. After considering the selected pitches (softening points: 230~260 ℃), pitches containing coal-tar were more volatile at a low boiling point and had a higher residual carbon content. This is a difference in the composition of coal-tar and PFO, and it was con- firmed that coal-tar has a lot of aromatics and PFO has a lot of aliphatics. The selected pitch was heated to 950 ℃ in a tubular reactor and physically activated with steam for 1 hour. Activated carbon containing coal-tar showed higher yield and microporosity compared to only PFO. In this study, the effect of increasing activated carbon yield by blending pitch raw materials was confirmed, and the physical activation characteristics according to the coal-tar mixing ratio were examined.

  • An Ejector enhances system efficiency, are easily operated, have a mechanically simple structure, and do not require a power supply. Because of these advantages, the ejector has been applied to a variety of industrial fields such as refrigerators, power plants and oil plants. In this work, an ejector was used to safely recycle anode tail gas in a 75-kW Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) system at KEPCO Research Institute. In this system, the ejector is placed at mixing point between the anode tail gas and the cathode tail gas or the fresh air. Commercial ejectors are not designed for the actual operating conditions for our fuel cell system. A new ejector was therefore designed for use beyond conventional operating limits. In the first place, a few sample ejectors were manufacured and the entrainment ratio was measured at a dummy stack. Through this experiment, the optimum ejector was chosen. The 75-kW MCFC system equipped with this optimum ejector was operated successfully.

  • China's rapid economic growth has resulted in significant environmental side effects. Therefore, China has been interested in reducing her dependence on foreign oil and gas by developing technologies needed for hydrogen, in addition to her increasing energy mix of nuclear and renewable energy form, such as solar and wind power. There are three isotopes of hydrogen, i.e. protium (P or H), deuterium (D), and tritium (T). Both deuterium and tritium are important materials in nuclear fuel cycle industry. Tritium is one of the critical radioactive nuclides. Planning for and implementing contamination control as a part of normal operation and maintenance activities is an important function in any hydrogen facility, especially tritium facility. The development of hydrogen isotopes analysis is the key issues in this area. Mass spectrometry (MS) with medium (about 600) and high resolution (> 1,400) is commercially available; however, the routine analysis of hydrogen isotopes is done with low-resolution MS (< 200) in China. This paper summarizes the progress of MS measurement technology for hydrogen isotope abundance in China, focusing on our lab's research program and technical status. An analyzing method has been introduced for accurate measurement of tritium abundance in the H.D.T system by low resolution MAT-253 MS. The quotient of compression ratio coefficient is determined by building up equipment for laboratory-scale preparation of secondary standard gases and by considering the difference in sensitivity between hydrogen isotopes. The results show that the measured value is reproducible within the relative error range of 0.8% for gas samples of different tritium abundance.

  • Diaphragm compressor is widely used for hydrogen compression because it achieves high gas pressure without gas contamination. Diaphragm deflecting in the cavity with high pressure formed by an oil compression is the most important component in the compressor. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain deflection degree of diaphragm to predict the damage point of diaphragm. The objective of this study is to estimate the diaphragm's damage point through diaphragm deflection test by implementing with strain gauges attached on several radial points. Without gas compression, strain sum of each points varied as similarly as the variation of the pressure with respect to time. And while the motor speed was slower than 400rpm, the strain near the rim was larger than that of the center. When motor speed, however, was over 500rpm, strain became similar to that of the center and the rim. With gas compression, it was shown that the variation of the strain sum was delayed against that of the pressure and the strain near the rim was much higher than that of the center.

  • Hydrogen is an alternative fuel for the future energy which can reduce pollutants and greenhouse gases. Synthesis gas has played an important role of synthesizing the valuable chemical compounds, for example methanol, DME and GTL chemicals. Renewable biomass feedstocks can be potentially used for fuel and chemicals. Current thermal processing techniques such as fast pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, and gasification tend to generate products with a large slate of compounds. Lignocellulose feedstocks such as forest residues are promising for the production of bio-oil and synthesis gas. Pyrolysis and gasification was investigated using thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and bubbling fluidized bed gasification reactor to utilize forest woody biomass. Most of the materials decomposed between $320^{\circ}C$ and $380^{\circ}C$ at heating rates of $5{\sim}20^{\circ}C$/min in thermogravimetric analysis. Bubbling fluidized bed reactor was used to study gasification characteristics, and the effects of reaction temperature, residence time and feedstocks on gas yields and selectivities were investigated. With increasing temperature from $750^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$, the yield of char decreased, whereas the yield of gas increased. The gaseous products consisted of mostly CO, $CO_2$, $H_2$ and a small fraction of $C_1-C_4$ hydrocarbons.

  • Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.

  • This paper describes development of management software for transformers based on artificial intelligent analysis technology of dissolved gases in oil. Fault interpretation using the artificial intelligent analysis is performed by the artificial neural network and a rule based on the analysis of dissolved gases. The used gases are acetylene($C_{2}H_{2}$), hydrogen($H_2$), ethylene($C_{2}H_{4}$), methane($CH_4$), ethane($C_{2}H_{6}$), carbon monoxide(CO) and carbon dioxide($CO_2$). This software is mainly composed of gases input, fault's causes, expected fault's phenomena in detail, the decision on maintenance as well as report and gas trend windows. It is indicated that this is very powerful software for the efficient management of oil-immersed transformers using data analysis of gas components.

  • In order to examine the electrochemical polarization characteristics of hydrogen embrittlement far STS444 with welding conditions, this paper carried out the accelerated hydrogen osmosis test and the electrochemical polarization test. That is, in $0.5M\; H_2SO_4+0.001M\;As_2O_3$ solution, the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of STS444 added to load of $1,400kg/cm^2$ together with hydrogen osmosis by current of $30mA/cm^2$ far 60 min. was considered. In researching the electrochemical polarization characteristics of hydrogen embrittlement for STS444 with welding conditions, the previous study clarified that tensile strength or elongation became low influenced by absorption of oil or water before welding. In this paper, we proposed the advanced mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement that integrated electrochemical corrosion with the existing mechanism of hydrogen embrirtlement.

  • Photovoltaic(PV) and hydrogen are the high quality, clean-burning fuel which could replace oil and natural gas for transportation, heating and power generation. If hydrogen is made via PV-powered water electrolysis, it would be possible, in principle, to provide energy on global scale, with essentially no greenhouse gas emission and very low level of local pollution. In this paper, the operation control of PV-SPE system is briefly discussed and the simulation scheme of the system is also proposed.
