Analysis of Levelized Cost of Electricity for Type of Stationary Fuel Cells (발전용 연료전지 형식에 따른 균등화 발전비용 분석)

  • For the economic analysis of fuel cells, levelized cost of electricity was calculated according to the type, capacity, and annual production of the fuel cells. The cost of every component was calculated through the system component breakdown. The direct cost of the system included stack cost, component cost, assembly, test, and conditioning cost, and profit markup cost were added. The effect of capacity and annual production was analyzed by fuel cell type. Sensitivity analysis was performed according to stack life, capital cost, project period, and fuel cost. As a result, it was derived how much the economic efficiency of the fuel cell improves as the capacity increases and the annual production increases.

  • In case of residential fuel cell system, it is significant to stably supply heat and power to a house with high efficiency and low cost for the successful commercialization. In this paper, the control strategy analysis has been performed to minimize the total cost including capital and operating cost of the residential fuel cell system. The proposed analysis methodology is based on the simulator including the efficiency models as well as the cost data for fuel cell components. The load control strategy is the key factor to decide the system efficiency and thus the cost analysis is performed when the fuel cell system is operated for several different load control logics. Additionally, annual efficiency of the system based on the seasonal load data is calculated since system efficiency is changeable according to the electric and heat demand change. As a result, the hybrid load control combined electricity oriented control and heat oriented control has the most economical operation.

  • Popular techniques for producing synthesis gas by converting methane include steam reforming and catalyst reforming. However, these are high temperature and high pressure processes limited by equipment, cost and difficulty of operation. Low temperature plasma is projected to be a technique that can be used to produce high concentration hydrogen from methane. It is suitable for miniaturization and for application in other technologies. In this research, the effect of changing each of the following variables was studied using an AC Glidarc system that was conceived by the research team: the gas components ratio, the gas flow rate, the catalyst reactor temperature and voltage. Glidarc plasma reformer was consisted of 3 electrodes and an AC power source. And air was added for the partial oxidation reaction of methane. The result showed that as the gas flow rate, the catalyst reactor temperature and the electric power increased, the methane conversion rate and the hydrogen concentration also increased. With $O_2/C$ ratio of 0.45, input flow rate of 4.9 l/min and power supply of 1 kW as the reference condition, the methane conversion rate, the high hydrogen selectivity and the reformer energy density were 69.2%, 36.2% and 35.2% respectively.

  • As global warming accelerates, clean hydrogen production becomes more important to mitigate it. However, importing hydrogen is necessary for countries that have high energy demands but insufficient resources to produce clean hydrogen. In line with the trend, this study investigated both the economic and environmental viability of an overseas hydrogen supply chain between Australia and the Republic of Korea. Several possible methods of water electrolysis and hydrogen carriers are compared and effect of renewable electricity price on the cost of hydrogen production is evaluated.

  • Until recently, only perfluorinated ionomer membrane such as Nation and Aciflex practically could be successfully used in water splitting. However, these membrane are limited by high cost and loss of membrane performance such as proton conductivity at elevated temperature above 80$^{\circ}C$. The sulfonated aromatic polymers such as PEEK and PSf, polyimides, and polybenzimidazoles are expected to have lower production cost as well as satisfactory chemical and electrochemical properties. HPAs and sulfonated polymers could have a significant influence on water electrolysis performance at elevated temperatures above 80$^{\circ}C$, but these phenomena have received relatively little attention until now. Therefore, it would be desirable to investigate the interrelation between the HPA and sulfonated polymer, such as SPEEK. The SPEEK membrane were prepared by the sulfonation of PEEK, and HPA was blended with SPEEK to increase the mechanical strength and electrochemical characteristics. As a results, electrochemical characteristics such as proton conductivity and ion exchange capacity were improved with the addion of 0.5 g HPA. And the properties of polymer electrolyte, SPEEK/HPA were better than Nation membrane at elevated temperature above 80$^{\circ}C$.

  • Proton conducting solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) membranes have been used in many energy technological applications such as water electolysis, fuel cells, redox-flow battery, and other electrochemical devices. The availability of stable membranes with good electrochemical characteristics as proton conductivity at high temperatures above 80 $^{\circ}C$ and low cost are very important for its applications. However, the presently available perfluorinated ionomers are not applicable because of high manufacturing cost and high temperature use to the decrease in the proton conductivity and mechanical strength. In order to make up for the weak points, the block copolymer (BPSf) of polysulfone and poly (phenylene sulfide sulfone) were synthesized and sulfonated. The electrolyte membranes were prepared with phosphotungstic acid (HPA)/sulfonated BPSf via solution blending. This study would be desirable to investigate the interaction between the HPA and sulfonated polysulfone. The results showed that the characteristics of SPSf/HPA blend membrane was a better than Nafion at high temperature, 100 $^{\circ}C$. These membranes proved to have a high proton conductivity, $6.29{\times}10-2$ S/cm, a water content, 23.9%, and a ion exchange capacity, 1.97 meq./g dry membrane. Moreover, some of the membranes kept their high thermal and mechanical stability.

Scenario-based Design and Life Cycle Cost Analysis of Energy Supply System for Transportation Sector (도로운송부문용 에너지 공급 시스템 설계 및 경제성평가)

  • This study aims to design energy supply systems from various energy sources for transportation sectors and comparatively analyze the life cycle cost of different scenario-based systems. For components of the proposed energy supply system, we consider a typical oil refinery, byproduct hydrogen system, renewable energy source (RES)-based electric generation system and existing electricity grid. We also include three types of vehicles in transportation sector such as internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV), electric vehicle (EV), fuel cell vehicle (FCV). We then develop various energy supply scenarios which consist of such components and evaluate the economic performance of different systems from the viewpoint of life cycle cost. Finally we illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework by conducting the design problem of energy supply systems of Jeju, Korea. As the results of life cycle cost analysis, EV fueled by electricity from grid is the most economically feasible. In addition, we identify key parameters to contribute the total life cycle cost such as fuel cost, vehicle cost, infra cost and maintenance cost using sensitivity analysis.

  • Welding is a reliable process and is mainly adopted for fabricating heavy structures. Recently, transverse cracks in the weld metal is serious problem, and they affect cost, efficiency, safety and joint reliability for various welded structures. In this view of point, this study investigated the potential factors for weld metal transverse crack. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The content of diffusible hydrogen in the commercial flux cored are welding wire was remarkable change by manufacturer. 2) The diffusible hydrogen content was thd main factor for weld metal transverse cracks. 3) Weld metal was immune to transverse cracking under the condition of low diffusible hydrogen content of high restraint condition. 4) The factors for weld metal transverse crack would be the content of diffusible hydrogen and restraint of weld joint.

  • In the production of hydrogen from various sources like cracking of LPG, LNG, Crude oil, or alkaline water electrolysis, the things that we keep in mind is the entrapment of unexpected impurities in the stream of produced $H_2$. If it is true that we are not able to produce 100% pure $H_2$, then subsequent procedure is the elimination of the impurities and the determination of the concentrations of each constituents in $H_2$ stream. By the way, each country has different constituents in its fuels and unavoidablely it was cost/economy debates between coutries. Thus, in this paper, our goal is to provide current international issues for hydrogen production.

Pt@Cu/C Core-Shell Catalysts for Hydrogen Production Through Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Decalin

  • Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts were successfully prepared by impregnation of a carbon support with copper precursor, followed by transmetallation between platinum and copper. The Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts retained a core of copper with a platinum surface. The prepared catalysts were used for hydrogen production through catalytic dehydrogenation of decalin for eventual application to an onboard hydrogen supply system. Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts were more efficient at producing hydrogen via decalin dehydrogenation than Pt/C catalysts containing the same amount of platinum. Supported core-shell catalysts utilized platinum highly efficiently, and accordingly, are lower-cost than existing platinum catalysts. The combination of impregnation and transmetallation is a promising approach for preparation of Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts.
