This study is about a hydrogen mitigation system in a containment building like an offshore or a nuclear plant. A hydrogen explosion is possibly happened after condensation of steam if hydrogen releases with steam in a containment buildings. Passive autocatalytic recombiner is the one of the measures, but the performance of this equipment is not sure because the distribution of hydrogen is very irregular and is not predicted correctly. This study proposes a new approach for improving the hydrogen removing performance with hydrogen-guiding property. The steam is simulated and analysed. The results show that the shallow air containment reduced over 55% of the released hydrogen and the deep air containment type reduces over 80% of released hydrogen.
In this paper, a study on a portable hydrogen alarm system based on the palladium coated single mode fiber sensor has been reported. The fabricated hydrogen sensor exhibited 0.14 dB, 0.41 dB and 0.54 dB optical intensity variation when it was exposed by the nitrogen and hydrogen mixed gas containing 0.5 %, 1 % and 4 % of the hydrogen concentration, respectively. The fabricated sensor exhibited 20 second of response time and 120 second of recovery time for 4 % hydrogen containing gas. The fiber optics layout and software algorithm for detection of hydrogen leakage have been presented. The implanted portable hydrogen alarm system successfully generated an alarm signal when a 4 % hydrogen containing gas was leaked out.
A hydrogen enriched CNG engine can be stably operated at ultra lean condition and reduce emission extremely. It also has advantage to increase gradually the use of hydrogen for the coming hydrogen-energy age. In this studies, the combustion and emission characteristics of heavy-duty hydrogen-CNG engine were investigated to verify the enhancement of performance by enriched hydrogen into natural gas. The results showed that a hydrogen-CNG engine could achieve ultra lean operation and low emission, while power was reduced by the decrease of intake air flow.
Using density functional Theory, we studied local structure of liquid ethylene glycol and 1,3-propanediol. For both liquid, making intramolecular hydrogen bonding is not preferred, because relative energy between with and without intramolecular hydrogen bond is only -1.95kcal/mol, which is far less than intermolecular hydrogen bonding energy, about -7.5kcal/mol. Also, hydrogen bond induce polarization of hydroxyl group and make $2^{nd}$ hydrogen bond more stronger. This effect was small in intramolecular hydrogen bond of ethylene glycol. When considering energy per hydrogen bond, making only one intermolecular hydrogen bond for ethylene glycol pair is energetically favored, while two intermolecular hydrogen bond can be formed in 1,3-propanediol pair.
The analysis of temperature behavior of a hydrogen tank during refueling is of significance to clarify the safety of the compressed hydrogen storage in vehicles since the temperature at a tank rises with inflow of hydrogen. A mass balance and an energy balance were combined to obtain analytical model for temperature change during the hydrogen refueling. The equation was coupled to Peng-Robinson-Gasem (PRG) equation of state (EOS) for hydrogen. The PRG EOS was adopted after comparison with other four different cubic EOSs. A parameter of the model was determined to fit data from experiments of various inlet flow rates and temperatures. The temperature and pressure change with refueling time were obtained by the developed model. The calculation results revealed that the extent of precooling was more effective than the flow rate control.
The adoption of hydrogen-powered Elec is expanding globally. Hydrogen is recognized as a potentially hazardous energy source, and safety assessment is crucial for the development of plans to supply hydrogen-powered electric buses. Hydrogen gas leakage can have a significant impact during bus operations, and continuous hydrogen leakage in hydrogen-powered vehicles can result in fatal accidents. In this study, information about hydrogen leakage is collected through sensors installed within the vehicles and is measured when the sensor detects a leak. The study also proposes the use of Pseudo Fuel Leakage (PFL, %) as an additional indicator for evaluating and monitoring hydrogen safety and leakage.
Hydrogen is the primary fuel in fuel cell systems. Because of high inflammation and explosion possibility of hydrogen, fuel cell systems require safety measures to prevent hydrogen hazard upon leakage. In this study, a model enclosure was made by referring to a commercial residential fuel cell system and hydrogen leakage experiments and computational simulations were conducted therein. Hydrogen was injected into the cavity through leakage holes located at the bottom while its flow rate was precisely controlled using MFC. The transient sensor signals from hydrogen sensors installed inside the enclosure were recorded and analyzed. The hydrogen sensor signals showed different delay times depending on their position relative to a leakage point, which indicated that hydrogen generally moves upward and accumulates at the upper region of a closed cavity. The inflammable regions with hydrogen concentration over 4% LEL were observed to locate near the leakage hole initially, and broaden towards the upper cavity region afterward. The simulation result showed that detection time at the hydrogen sensor was similar to the pattern of experimental results. However, the maximum concentration of hydrogen had a gap between experiment and simulation at detect point due to measurement errors and reaction rate.
At present, hydrogen is emerging as a future energy source based on environment-friendly aspect, creation of new industry, and enhancement of domestic energy security. In accordance with it, the world's leading automobile companies are focusing on the development and commercialization of hydrogen electric vehicle technology, and each country is strengthening its hydrogen fueling station deployment strategy for its own country. Furthermore, the supply of hydrogen fueling stations is actively promoting under national support. More than 500 hydrogen fueling stations are being constructed, operated and planned around the world. The introduction of hydrogen energy is also progressing in Korea, by announcing road-map to supply hydrogen electric vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations by year. However, there is insufficient discussion on the capacity of hydrogen fueling station in Korea. Therefore, this study suggests the optimum capacity of hydrogen fuelling station for domestic hydrogen economy.
Holmium-doped TiO2 nanotubes (Ho-TNTs) were manufactured through anodization treatment and electrochemical deposition, and optimization experiments were conducted using various Holmium doping concentrations and time as variables. Surface as well as electrochemical characteristics were analyzed to study the prepared photocatalysts. Ho-TNTs were found to exist only in anatase phase through X-ray diffraction analysis. Ho-TNTs with 0.01 wt% 100 seconds shows a photocurrent density of 3.788 mA/cm2 and an effective photo-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.30%, which is more efficient than pure TiO2 nanotubes (pure-TNTs) (at bias potential 1.5 V vs. Hg/HgO). The photocatalytic activity of the aforementioned Ho-TNTs for hydrogen production was evaluated with the result of -29.20 µmol/h·cm2.
In this work, the hydrogen production costs of the nuclear energy sources are estimated in the necessary input data on a Korean specific basis. G4-ECONS was appropriately modified to calculate the cost for hydrogen production of HTE process with Very High Temperature nuclear Reactor (VHTR) as a thermal energy source rather than the LUEC (Levelized Unit Electricity Cost). The general ground rules and assumptions follow G4-ECONS. Through a preliminary study of cost estimates, we wished to evaluate the economic potential for hydrogen produced from nuclear energy, and, in addition, to promptly estimate the hydrogen production costs for an updated input data for capital costs. The estimated costs presented in this paper show that hydrogen production by the VHTR could be competitive with current techniques of hydrogen production from fossil fuels if $CO_2$ capture and sequestration is required. Nuclear production of hydrogen would allow large-scale production of hydrogen at economic prices while avoiding the release of $CO_2$. Nuclear production of hydrogen could thus become the enabling technology for the hydrogen economy. The major factors that would affect the cost of hydrogen were also discussed.
