During drought season, the self-purification capacities of the four major rivers in Korea are significantly controlled by environmental maintenance flows supplied from the mid- or upstream large dams. Therefore, it is obviously important to operate the dams considering not only water quantity aspects but also conservation of downstream water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Mathematical water quality models can be efficiently used to serve as a decision support tool for evaluating the effects of operational alternatives of upstream dams on the downstream aquatic environment. In this study, an unsteady one-dimensional water quality model, KORIV1-WIN was developed based on the theoretical and numerical algorithms for hydrodynamics and water quality simulations of CE-QUAL-RIV1. It consists of hydrodynamic(KORIV1H) and water quality(KORIV1Q) modules, and pre- and post-processors for input data preparations and output displays. The model can be used to predict one-dimensional hydraulic and water quality variations in rivers with highly unsteady flows such as dam outflow change, rainfall-runoff, and chemical spill events.
The objective of this paper presents the application of an "integrated urban flood modeling-runoff model, urban flood model and sewer system model-" in a highly urbanized area of Samcheok where is seriously inundated in 2002 and 2003. For this, we demonstrate how couple a 1-D hydrodynamic model of the river, a 2-D hydrodynamic model of the overland (surface) flow, and a sewer network model including each boundary conditions. In order to make data file for the model, topographic information like elevation and share rate of buildings are directly extracted from DEM or topographical source data without data exchange to avoid uncertainty errors. Furthermore, the research is to assess the impacts of Manning n and buildings influences to inundated depth by changing its share ratio from 10 % to 30 % in low-land urban area. As a results, we found out that the urban inundated depth was decreased by Manning n but increased by buildings ratio. The calculated results of inundation was similar with observed one in 2002 and 2003 flooding. Furthermore, the area was also inundated under not riverbank break case in 2002 flooding.

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate of backwash system of hydrodynamic separator filter (HSF) with solar powered submerged pumps. It consists of a photovoltaic solar array, control electronics, battery, and two submersible pump powered by a 12 voltage DC motor. The laboratory scale study on treatable potential of micro particles using backwash HSF that was a combined with perlite filter cartridge and backwash nozzles. Since it was not easy to use actual storm water in the scaled-down hydraulic model investigations, it was necessary to reproduce ranges of particle sizes with synthetic materials. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; ion exchange resin partices, silica gel particles, and commercial area manhole sediment particles. HSF was made of acryl resin with 250 mm of diameter filter chamber and overall height of 800 mm. Four case test were performed with different backwashing conditions and determined the SS removal efficiency with various surface loading rates. The operated range of surface loading rate was about 308~$1,250m^3/m^2/day$. It was found that SS removal efficiency of HSF using two submersible pumps improved by about 18% compared with HSF without backwash. Nonpoint control devices with solar water pumping systems would be useful for backwashing the filter in areas with not suppling electricity and reduce filter media exchange cost.

In this research, the integrated modeling system by coupling of a watershed model, a reservoir model, and a river model has been constructed in Doam reservoir watershed. Because of domestic climate characteristics, it is inevitable to construct the dam for control of flood, water use, and power production due to the heavy rain in the summer. Especially, when the dam is constructed on the stream for these kinds of purpose, it is necessary to consider this region as one watershed and also to make the integrated system for simulation and management. In this study, SWAT model was constructed for watershed modeling and EFDC-WASP model was constructed for simulating the hydrodynamic and water quality of the reservoir and the downstream in Doam dam watershed. Also, the water quality improvement equipment for demonstration was applied in the upstream part of Doam reservoir, which shows the applicability of the developed integrated modeling system.
Future climate change may affect the hydro-thermal and biogeochemical characteristics of dam reservoirs, the most important water resources in Korea. Thus, scientific projection of the impact of climate change on the reservoir environment, factoring uncertainties, is crucial for sustainable water use. The purpose of this study was to predict the future water temperature and stratification structure of the Soyanggang Reservoir in response to a total of 42 scenarios, combining two climate scenarios, seven GCM models, one surface runoff model, and three wind scenarios of hydrodynamic model, and to quantify the uncertainty of each modeling step and scenario. Although there are differences depending on the scenarios, the annual reservoir water temperature tended to rise steadily. In the RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, the upper water temperature is expected to rise by 0.029 ℃ (±0.012)/year and 0.048 ℃ (±0.014)/year, respectively. These rise rates are correspond to 88.1 % and 85.7 % of the air temperature rise rate. Meanwhile, the lower water temperature is expected to rise by 0.016 ℃ (±0.009)/year and 0.027 ℃ (±0.010)/year, respectively, which is approximately 48.6 % and 46.3 % of the air temperature rise rate. Additionally, as the water temperatures rises, the stratification strength of the reservoir is expected to be stronger, and the number of days when the temperature difference between the upper and lower layers exceeds 5 ℃ increases in the future. As a result of uncertainty quantification, the uncertainty of the GCM models showed the highest contribution with 55.8 %, followed by 30.8 % RCP scenario, and 12.8 % W2 model.
This paper presents the methodology for construction of time-area curve via the width function and thereby rational estimation of time of concentration and storage coefficient of Clark model within the framework of method of moments. To this end time-area curve is built by rescaling the grid-based width function under the assumption of pure translation and then the analytical expressions for two parameters of Clark model are proposed in terms of method of moments. The methodology in this study based on the analytical expressions mentioned before is compared with both (1) the traditional optimization method of Clark model provided by HEC-1 in which the symmetric time-area curve is used and the difference between observed and simulated hydrographs is minimized (2) and the same optimization method but replacing time-area curve with rescaled width function in respect of peak discharge and time to peak of simulated direct runoff hydrographs and their efficiency coefficient relative to the observed ones. The following points are worth of emphasizing: (1) The optimization method by HEC-1 with rescaled width function among others results in the parameters well reflecting the observed runoff hydrograph with respect to peak discharge coordinates and coefficient of efficiency; (2) For the better application of Clark model it is recommended to use the time-area curve capable of accounting for irregular drainage structure of a river basin such as rescaled width function instead of symmetric time-area curve by HEC-1; (3) Moment-based methodology with rescaled width function developed in this study also gives rise to satisfactory simulation results in terms of peak discharge coordinates and coefficient of efficiency. Especially the mean velocities estimated from this method, characterizing the translation effect of time-area curve, are well consistent with the field surveying results for the points of interest in this study; (4) It is confirmed that the moment-based methodology could be an effective tool for quantitative assessment of translation and storage effects of natural river basin; (5) The runoff hydrographs simulated by the moment-based methodology tend to be more right skewed relative to the observed ones and have lower peaks. It is inferred that this is due to consideration of only one mean velocity in the parameter estimation. Further research is required to combine the hydrodynamic heterogeneity between hillslope and channel network into the construction of time-area curve.
Many reservoirs in Korea and their downstream environments are under increased pressure for water utilization and ecosystem management from longer discharge of turbid flood runoff compared to a natural river system. Turbidity($C_T$) is an indirect measurement of water 'cloudiness' and has been widely used as an important indicator of water quality and environmental "health". However, $C_T$ modeling studies have been rare due to lack of experimental data that are necessary for model validation. The objective of this study is to validate a coupled three-dimensional(3D) hydrodynamic and particle dynamics model (ELCOM-CAEDYM) for the simulation of turbid density flows in stratified Daecheong Reservoir using extensive field data. Three different groups of suspended solids (SS) classified by the particle size were used as model state variables, and their site-specific SS-$C_T$ relationships were used for the conversion between field measurements ($C_T$) and state variables (SS). The simulation results were validated by comparing vertical profiles of temperature and turbidity measured at monitoring stations of Haenam(R3) and Dam(R4) in 2004. The model showed good performance in reproducing the reservoir thermal structure and propagation of stream density flow, and the magnitude and distribution of turbidity in the reservoir were consistent with the field data. The 3D model and turbidity modeling framework suggested in this study can be used as a supportive tool for the best management of turbidity flow in other reservoirs that have similar turbidity problems.
The main objectives o reservoir optimal operation can be described as follows : maximization of the benefits through optimal allocation of the limited water resources for various purpose; minimization of t도 costs by the flood damage in potential damaging regions and risk of dam failure, etc. through safe drainage of a bulky volume of excessive water by a proper reservoir operation. Reviewing the past research works related to reservoir operation, we can find that the study on the matter of the former has been extensively carried out in last decades rather than the matter of the latter. This study is focused on developing a methodology of optimal reservoir operation for flood control, and a case study is performed on the Chungju multipurpose reservoir in Korea. The final goal of the study is to establish a reservoir optimal operation system which can search optimal policy to compromise two conflicting objectives: downstream flood damage and dam safety-upstream flood damage. In order to reach the final goal of the study, the following items were studied : (1)validation of hydrological data using HYMOS: (2)establishment of a downstream flood routing model coupling a rainfall-runoff model and SOBEK system for 1-D hydrodynamic flood routing; (3)replication of a flood damage estimation model by a neural network; (4)development of an integrated reservoir optimization module for an optimal operation policy.

A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model with the fine grid is applied to simulate the barotropic tides, tidal currents, residual currents and salinity dispersions in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Data inputs include seasonal hydrography, mean wind and river input, and oceanic tides. Computed tidal distributions of four major tides($M_2,\;S_2,\;K_1$ and $O_1$) are presented and results are in good agreement with the observations in the domain. The model reproduces well the tidal charts. The tidal residual current is relatively strong around west coast of Korea including the Cheju Island and southern coast of China. The current by $M_2$ has a maximum speed of 10 cm/s in the vicinity of Cheju Island with a anti-clockwise circulation in the Yellow Sea. General tendency of the current, however, is to flow eastward in the South Sea. Surface residual current simulated with $M_2$ and with $M_2+S_2+K_1+O_1$ tidal forcing shows slightly different patterns in the East China Sea. The model shows that the southerly wind reduces the southward current created by freshwater discharge. In summer during high runoff(mean discharge about $50,000\;m^3/s$ of Yangtze), low salinity plume-like structure(with S < 30.0 psu) extending some 160 km toward the northeast and Changjiang Diluted Water(CDW), below salinity 26 psu, was found within about 95 km. The offshore dispersion of the Changjiang outflow water is enhanced by the prevailing southerly wind. It is estimated that the inertia of the river discharge cannot exclusively reach the around sea of Cheju Island. It is noted that spatial and temporal distribution of salinity and the other materials are controlled by mixture of Changjiang discharge, prevailing wind, advection by flowing warm current and tidal current.

This study presents the width function-based Clark model. To this end, rescaled width function with distinction between hillslope and channel velocity is used as time-area curve and then it is routed through linear storage within the framework of not finite difference scheme used in original Clark model but analytical expression of linear storage routing. There are three parameters focused in this study: storage coefficient, hillslope velocity and channel velocity. SCE-UA, one of the popular global optimization methods, is applied to estimate them. The shapes of resulting IUHs from this study are evaluated in terms of the three statistical moments of hydrologic response functions: mean, variance and the third moment about the center of IUH. The correlation coefficients to the three statistical moments simulated in this study against these of observed hydrographs were estimated at 0.995 for the mean, 0.993 for the variance and 0.983 for the third moment about the center of IUH. The shape of resulting IUHs from this study give rise to satisfactory simulation results in terms of the mean and variance. But the third moment about the center of IUH tend to be overestimated. Clark model proposed in this study is superior to the one only taking into account mean and variance of IUH with respect to skewness, peak discharge and peak time of runoff hydrograph. From this result it is confirmed that the method suggested in this study is useful tool to reflect the heterogeneity of drainage path and hydrodynamic parameters. The variation of statistical moments of IUH are mainly influenced by storage coefficient and in turn the effect of channel velocity is greater than the one of hillslope velocity. Therefore storage coefficient and channel velocity are the crucial factors in shaping the form of IUH and should be considered carefully to apply Clark model proposed in this study.
