  • Metal corrosion in acidic environments is a major issue in various industrial applications. This study evaluates the 4-piperonylideneaminoantipyrine (PPDAA) corrosion inhibition efficiency for mild steel in a hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. The weight loss method was used to determine the corrosion inhibition efficiency at different concentrations and immersion time periods. Results revealed that the highest inhibition efficiency (94.3%) was achieved at 5 mM concentration after 5 hours of immersion time. To inspect the surface morphology of the inhibitor film on the mild steel surface, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used before and after immersion in 1.0 M HCl. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the molecular structure and electronic properties of the inhibitor molecule to understand the corrosion inhibition mechanism. Theoretical results showed that the inhibitor molecule can adsorb onto the mild steel surface through its nitrogen and oxygen atoms, forming a protective layer that prevents HCl corrosive attack. These findings highlight the potential of PPDAA as an effective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in HCl solution. Moreover, combining experimental and theoretical approaches provides insights into the mechanism of corrosion inhibition, which is essential for developing effective strategies to prevent metal corrosion in acidic environments.

  • Studies on the optimum conditions of acid hydrolysis of sweet potato starch cake and its utilization on the production of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a carbon source were conducted and the results showed as follows; 1.The highest hydrolysis rate, 62.7 % of the reducing sugar based on the weight of the dry matter, was obtained when the starch cake was hydrolyzed with 1.0% of hydrochloric acid at 2.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 30 minutes. 2. But the yeast grew most favorably on the hydrolyzate obtained by treating the starch cake with 0.5% of hydrochloric acid at 2.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 minutes. Reducing sugar content of hydrolyzate was 51.4%. 3. The optimum pH of the culture medium was 7.0, Cell growth reached to the maximum at 36 hours of cultivation time. 4. According to the vitamin requirement tests, Ca-pantothenate was found to be a promoting factor for the growth of the yeast cells. 5. "Gluten acid hydrolyzate" was most effective to the cell growth when added to the medium at the concentration of 0.1% as a nitrogen source. 6. Sacch. cerevisiae could assimilate the sugars in the hydrolyzate about 89.1%, and the yields of the yeast cells showed 23.2mg/ml of culture medium.

  • Waste aluminum dross was processed to prepare alum with sulfuric acid, and poly aluminum chloride(PAC) with hydrochloric acid. Metallic aluminum remained in the waste dross was dissolved into the sulfuric acid solution, and the solution could be used as alum for water treatment chemicals after adjusting the required alumina concentration and pH of the solution. Also, it was dissolved into the hydrochloric acid solution and processed to make PAC solution. Compared with the conventional method for preparation of alum and PAC using aluminum hydroxide, material cost could be saved in this method. Also, there is an additional merit in view of recycling of the waste aluminum dross by reducing the amount of waste disposed to landfill.

  • Corrosion inhibition of mild steel by nevirapine, an antiretroviral has been investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique and weight loss methods. The experimental results suggested, nevirapine is a good corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1M hydrochloric acid medium and the inhibition efficiency increased with increase in inhibitor concentration. The kinetic parameters for corrosion process and thermodynamic parameters for adsorption process were calculated and discussed. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the surface of mild steel followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

  • The present work is aimed to evaluate the conditions of the hydride generation (HG) for germanium analysis by inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-atomic emission spectrometry (AES). Twelve different kinds of acids were used such as phosphoric, hydrochloric, nitric, sulfuric, perchloric, boric, tartaric, malic, oxalic, tannic, citric, and acetic acid. It was found that phosphoric acid yielded the maximum efficiency of hydride generation. Also, efficient hydride generation was obtined with the buffer solutions containing phosphate ions over a wide range of pH. In addition, in the presence of phosphoric acid the interference caused by metals was suppressed in the hydride generation of germanium. As the concentrations of a reducing agent and a stabilizing increased the hydride generation efficiency and the acid concentration proviaing the maximum intensity were increased. By using an analytical method developed in this study, the contents of germanium in water and rock samples were determined. The detection limit of germanium in the presence of phosphoric acid was $0.03{\mu}g/L$.

  • In classical titrimetric analyses, the major concern is the concentration of titrant, usually the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, that could be changed as time goes by and it is accompanied with the inaccuracy of the resulting data. And the statistical approach, the nonlinear regression analysis, which is a well-known statistical method, was introduced to determine the accurate concentration of the titrant and the exact value of parameters, $K_a$, r, $C_a$, $C_b$, for 0.01 M aqueous solutions of analytes, sodium pyruvate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium hydroxide, ammonium chloride and acetic acid at $25^{\circ}C$. We used Gauss-Newton method for the linearlization of the nonlinear titration system and the two-parameter fitting showed appreciable convergent data for the parameters of the analytes set with the various range of $K_a$ value.

  • A thermotolerant yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae KNU5377 (abbreviated as KNU5377, was exposed to inorganic acids including sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric acid. As a stressor, each inorganic acid is very easily dissociated in water, resulting in lowering environmental pH. When compared with a reference S. cerevisiae ATCC24858, KNU5377 could overcome such a severe condition containing a final 0.4% concentration of sulfuric acid or nitric acid to grow at the overnight culture, but this reference could not. Additionally, this strain showed a surprisingly strong tolerance by surviving despite of exposure to the regime of 0.35% of hydrochloric acid for over 90 min and also to 0.6% of sulfuric acid for 30 min. On the contrary, both strains could not survive against a final 0.45% concentration of nitric acid. This strain KNU5377 could produce ethanol of 3% in 2 days by using the fermentation medium containing a final 0.3% concentration of sulfuric arid. Moreover, change into a final 0.2% concentration of sulfuric acid caused this strain to enhance fermentation productivity up to about 4.5% even at $40^{\circ}C$. In exposure to a final 0.2% of sulfuric acid for 60 min, trehalose was most accumulated within 30 min in KNU5377, and this suggested a cellular defense system led by this disaccharide was profitable for this strain to lead to no morphological changes.

  • The effects of synthesis conditions on characteristics of the calcium-azo complex pigment, C.I. Pigment Red 57:1, were studied. It was mainly considered that the industrially required synthesis conditions for lowering electrical conductivity of the pigment solution keeping pigment quality such as particle size and color characteristics. Three parameters were chosen as control factors during the synthesis. The first was the amount of hydrochloric acid added to transform sodium nitrite into nitrous acid. The second was the amount of calcium chloride added to insolubilize the synthesized azo dye. The final factor was pH control during the coupling reaction. The electrical conductivity and pigment aggregate particle size were dependent on the amount of hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride. Higher HCl concentration gave brighter yellowish-red color because of smaller particle aggregate size and narrower size distribution. Amount of charged ions in the synthesis process might affect the "lake" formation resulting different particle aggregate size and color shade.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of hydrogen generation from solid-state $NaBH_4$ and fuel cell operation for fuel cell aircraft. The solid-state $NaBH_4$ was used for a high hydrogen storage density, and was reacted with hydrochloric acid to generate hydrogen. The hydrogen generation rate for the solid-state $NaBH_4$ reaction was measured at various conditions. As a result, the hydrogen generation rate was increased with the feed rate and concentration of hydrochloric acid, while not be affected by the reaction temperature. A fuel cell was connected with the solid-state $NaBH_4$ hydrogen generator. The stable power output was obtained at the gradual and sudden increases of electric loads.

  • To propose a cause analysis method of pressurized facilities, a likelihood of failure (LOF) for the thinning module by hydrochloric acid corrosion was analyzed through the risk-based inspection (RBI) using API-581 BRD. For this investigation, the technical module subfactor (TMSF), as a main factor of the LOF, was estimated, and the effects of parameters on the TMSF were analyzed quantitatively. As a result, we found that the TMSF increased with increasing chloride ion concentration and temperature, but it decreased with increasing thickness of the facilities, inspection number and inspection effectiveness. Also, the TMSF showed a relatively low value for the monitoring system implemented and the overdesign factor>1.5. In this condition, the TMSF changed sensitively with the inspection number, the inspection effectiveness and the overdesign factor, and its magnitude varied with the monitoring system.
