  • Excessive dynamic-tension variations on the top-tensioned risers (TTRs) deteriorate the structural integrity and cause potential safety hazards. This phenomenon has become more remarkable in the development of deep-water fields with harsher environmental loads. The conventional prediction method of tension variations in hydro-pneumatic tensioner (HPT) has the disadvantage to underestimate the magnitude of cyclic loads. The actual excessive dynamic tension variations are larger when considering the viscous frictional fluid effects. In this paper, a suppression method of tension variations in HPT is modeled by incorporating the magneto-rheological (MR) damper and linear-force actuator. The mathematical models of the combined HPT and MR damper are developed and a force-control scheme is introduced to compensate the excessive tension variations on the riser tensioner ring. Numerical simulations and analyses are conducted to evaluate the suppression of tension variations in HPT under both regular- and irregular-wave conditions for a drilling riser of a tensioned-leg platform (TLP). The results show that significant reduction of tension variations can be achieved by introducing the proposed system. This research has provided a theoretical foundation for the HPT tension control and related structural protection.

  • In the water purification plant, the mixture of water and chemical from the mixing basin enters the flocculation basin. The rotating flocculators are generally used for the efficient flocculation of dregs. In this paper, the performance of flocculators of a vertical paddle type, widely used in the typical flocculation basins, and a hydro-foil type, recently disseminated in the field, are compared with each other by use of the numerical method. Also the characteristics and the efficiency are analyzed with CFD techniques. The strain rate and the eddy viscosity are compared for two types to predict the mixing efficiency, and the maximum speed and its location are pursued from the computed data. The hydrofoil type shows that the eddy viscosity is enhanced 1.66 to 3.03 times larger than that of vertical paddle type, and also produced 1.87 to 1.95 times larger flocs for each stage. However, the rapid rotation of hydrofoil may chop the floc to small size due to the higher turbulence intensity. From the result of computation, the strong and weak points of each type have been analyzed for the decision making.

  • Hydro dynamically developing and simultaneously (hydro dynamically and thermally) developing laminar flows of a Bingham plastic in a circular pipe have been investigated numerically. Solutions have been obtained by using a four-step fractional method combined with an equal order bilinear finite element method. For the hydro dynamically developing flow, shorter entrance length is required to reach fully developed velocity field for larger yield stress and non-monotonic pressure drop along the pipe centerline is observed when the yield stress exceeds a certain critical value. For the simultaneously developing flow, the heat transfer characteristics show the same trends as those predicted for the thermally developing flow (Graetz problem).

  • HMT is a type of continuously variable transmission which has split power flow path characteristics with gear train and hydro static unit. The benefit of improved fuel economy and high power capacity enables it to be a promising application fur large vehicles. This paper presents the analysis results including velocity, static torque, transmission efficiency and dynamic model of the HMT that is developed for city buses. The speeds or gear shafts, the static clutch torque and split power ratio for each mode are detailed here. From the analysis of HMT transmission efficiency considering the power loss in meshed gear and hydraulic unit, we can conclude that minimization of hydraulic power is necessary for improved fuel economy design. Also, the dynamic simulation result for mode shift characteristics shows that little shift shock is observed because of the synchronized rotation speed in clutch.

  • Characteristics of off-grid hybrid renewable energy sources for high mountain villages are discussed. Considering reliability of electric power generation, Photovoltaic (PV)-wind hybrid and PV-hydro hybrid system are suggested. Connecting two or more villages with these hybrid systems, an extended hybrid off-grid can be formed. Sustainability of entire system is important in design of off-grid system, and income generation of the village people using the electricity should be considered.

  • The paper deals with the study of the mechanical time-harmonic forced vibration of the hydro-piezoelectric system consisting of the piezoelectric plate and compressible viscous fluid with finite depth. The exact equations of motion of the theory of linear electro-elasticity for piezoelectric materials are employed for describing the plate motion, however, the fluid flow is described by employing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible (barotropic) viscous fluid. The plane-strain state in the plate and the plane flow of the fluid are considered and the corresponding mathematical problems are solved by employing the Fourier transform with respect to the space coordinate which is on the coordinate axis directed along the platelying direction. The expressions of the corresponding Fourier transform are determined analytically, however, the inverse transforms are found numerically. Numerical results on the interface pressure and the electrical potential are obtained for various PZT materials and these results are discussed. According to these results, in particular, it is established that the electromechanical coupling effect can significantly decrease the interface pressure.

  • The numerical simulations of Heater Experiment-D (HE-D) at the Mont Terri rock laboratory in Switzerland were performed to investigate an applicability of FLAC3D to reproduce the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour in Opalinus Clay, as part of the DECOVLEX-2015 project Task B. To investigate the reliability of numerical simulations of the coupled behaviour using FLAC3D code, the simulation results were compared with the observations from the in-situ experiment, such as temperature at 16 sensors, pore pressure at 6 sensors, and strain at 22 measurement points. An anisotropic heat conduction model, fluid flow model, and transversely isotropic elastic model in FLAC3D successfully represented the coupled thermo-hydraulic behaviour in terms of evolution for temperature and pore pressure, however, performance of the models for mechanical behavior is not satisfactory compared with the measured strain.

  • A fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model is established to evaluate frost heave behaviour of saturated frost-susceptible soils. The method is based on mass conservation, energy conservation, and force equilibrium equations, which are fully coupled with each other. These equations consider various physical phenomena during one-dimensional soil freezing such as latent heat of phase change, thermal conductivity changes, pore water migration, and the accompanying mechanical deformation. Using the thermo-hydro-mechanical model, a sensitivity analysis study is conducted to examine the effects of the geotechnical parameters and external conditions on the amount of frost heave and frost heaving rate. According to the results of the sensitivity analysis, initial void ratio significantly affects each objective as an individual parameter, whereas soil particle thermal conductivity and temperature gradient affect frost heave behaviour to a greater degree when applied simultaneously. The factors considered in this study are the main factors affecting the frost heaving amount and rate, which may be used to determine the frostbite sensitivity of a new sample.
