Experimental Study of Solid-water Slurry Flow in Vertical Pipe (수직관내 고-액 슬러리 유동 계측 실험연구)

  • In order to develop a nodule conveying system through a flexible pipe out of the deep-seabed manganese nodule miner, an experimental study of the solid-water slurry flow in vertical pipe is performed as the first stage of total experiments. Hydraulic characteristics of the pipe slurry flow such as slip velocity, transport concentration and pressure gradient are investigated for the size of particle, load ratio, and flow rate of water. The higher the load ratio is, the larger the transport concentration and pressure gradient become. The bigger the size of particles is, the larger the pressure gradient becomes. The effectiveness of the flow rate to hydraulic performance is also investigated. This results are to be used for designing crusher and pump, and operating the conveying device.

  • When we want to reproduce transport of sediment in the fields in a laboratory, we have to establish a similitude law. A similitude law is necessary when sediment transport of field is reproduced in a laboratory. When we apply our knowledge about sediment transport obtained in the laboratory to predict sediment transport in the field, we can apply Froudian law to a fluid motion that becomes agitation agency and transporting flow of sediment movement.   • As a new technical approach, a hydraulic and magnetic clamp device was attempted to realize a magnetic clamp crane system that uses 8 simultaneously actuating individual hydraulic cylinders. Through this approach, a Sr type of ferritic permanent magnet ($SrO{\cdot}6Fe_2O_3$), not the previously employed electro-magnet, was utilized for the purpose of lifting and transporting the heavy weighted and oversized curved steel plates used for manufacturing the ships. This study is aimed at manufacturing and developing the hydraulic magnetic clamp prototype, which is composed of three main parts - the base frame, cylinder joint, and magnet joint - in order to safely transport such curved steel plates. Furthermore, this research was pursued to conduct a performance evaluation as to the prototype manufacture and acquire the planned quantity value and the development purpose items. The most significant item for a performance evaluation was estimated for the magnetic adhesive force (G) and in this process, a ferritic permanent magnet (Sr type) with 3700~4000 G of residual induction (Br) and 2640/2770 Oe of coercive force (Hc) was utilized. In addition, other relevant items such as hoist tension (kN), transportation time (sec), and the applied load (Kgf) exerted on the hydraulic cylinders were also evaluated in order to acquire the optimum quantity value. As a result of the evaluation, the relevant device turned out to be suitable for safely transporting the curved steel plates.

  • A modified kinematic wave model of the overland flow in vegetated filter strips was developed. The model can predict both flow depth and hydraulic radius of the flow. Existing models can predict only mean flow depth. By using the hydraulic radius, erosion, deposition and flow's transport capacity can be more rationally computed. Spacing hydraulic radius was used to compute flow's hydraulic radius. Numerical solution of the model was accomplished by using both a second-order nonlinear scheme and a linear solution scheme. The nonlinear portion of the model ensures convergence and the linear portion of the model provides rapid computations. This second-order nonlinear scheme minimizes numerical computation errors that may be caused by linearization of a nonlinear model. This model can also be applied to golf courses, parks, no-till fields to route runoff and production and attenuation of many nonpoint source pollutants.

  • A hydraulic scale model was constructed to investigate the characteristics of flows and pollutant transport in laboratory. The distorted hydraulic scale model by assuming Froude similarity was adopted to represent hydrodynamics and dispersion in a river system. The scale model was composed of water reservoir, slope control part, booster pump, distributing plate and main channel. A constructed scale model will be used to present the overall concentration profiles of tracer and a research will be performed to convert the measured values using a hydraulic scale model to real field scale.

Improving HSPF Model's Hydraulic Accuracy with FTABLES Based on Surveyed Cross Sections (실측 하천 단면자료를 이용한 HSPF 유역모델의 수리정확도 개선)

  • The hydrological simulation program FORTRAN (HSPF) is a comprehensive watershed model that employs the hydraulic function table (FTABLE) (depth-area-volume-flow relationship) to represent the geometric and hydraulic properties of water bodies. The hydraulic representation of the HSPF model mainly depends on the accuracy of the FTABLES. These hydraulic representations determine the response time of water quality state variables and also control the scour, deposition, and transport of sediments in the water body. In general, FTABLES are automatically generated based on reach information such as mean depth, mean width, length, and slope along with a set of standard assumptions about the geometry and hydraulics of the channel, so these FTABLES are unable to accurately describe the geometry and hydraulic behavior of rivers and reservoirs. In order to compensate the weakness of HSPF for hydraulic modeling, we generated alternate method to improve the accuracy of FTABLES for rivers, using the surveyed cross sections and rating curves. The alternative method is based on the hydraulics simulated by HEC-RAS using the surveyed cross sections and rating curves, and it could significantly improve the accuracy of FTABLES. Although the alternate FTABLE greatly improved the hydraulic accuracy of the HSPF model, it had little effect on the hydrological simulation.

Transient Groundwater Flow Modeling in Coastal Aquifer

  • Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and the interface between seawater and freshwater in an unconfined coastal aquifer was evaluated by numerical modeling. A two-dimensional vertical cross section of the aquifer was constructed. Coupled flow and salinity transport modeling were peformed by using a numerical code FEFLOW In this study, we investigated the changes in groundwater flow and salinity transport in coastal aquifer with hydraulic condition such as the magnitude of recharge flux, hydraulic conductivity. Especially, transient simulation considering tidal effect and seasonal change of recharge rate was simulated to compare the difference between quasi-steady state and transient state. Results show that SGD flux is in proportion to the recharge rate and hydraulic conductivity, and the interface between the seawater and the freshwater shows somewhat retreat toward the seaside as recharge flux increases. Considered tidal effect, SGD flux and flow directions are affected by continuous change of the sea level and the interface shows more dispersed pattern affected by velocity variation. The cases which represent variable daily recharge rate instead of annual average value also shows remarkably different result from the quasi-steady case, implying the importance of transient state simulation.

  • A flow pattern and water exchange in Sagami Bay is examined using a barotropic hydraulic model. In the model experiments, the volume transports of the Kuroshio Through Flow were changed with time. The results of the model experiments show that when the volume transport is increased with time, water mass and vorticity are transferred to the inner part of the bay by wakes from the western part of the bay. In the case of decrease, as the wakes are ceased, the inner cyclonic circulation water is discharged to the outside of the bay by its southward extension through the Oshima eastern channel. It is found that the water exchange by the short-term variation of volume transport in time is about 20% of all the bay water.
