  • This paper is to propose the concept and performance of a gravity engine which could extract energy from sea or river as a clean. renewable and sustainable power. the vertical motion of the buoyancy cylinder of the present gravity engine is converted to the mechanical work directly without any hydraulic loss. The positive net energy between the imposed and harnessed one is achieved by the specific operating procedure. The detailed derivation of the energy balance is made based on the first principle of thermodynamics. The calculation demonstrates that the present gravity engine could harness more energy than the conventional turbine system in the same basin area because of the relatively high efficiency in the energy conversion system and added mass from the buoyancy cylinder.

  • The thermal-hydraulic effects of removing the RCC guide thimble plugs are evaluated for 8 Westinghouse type PWR plants in Korea as a part of feasibility study: core outlet loss coefficient, thimble bypass flow, and best estimate flow. It is resulted that the best estimate thimble bypass flow increases about by 2% and the best estimate flow increases approximately by 1.2%. The resulting DNBR penalties can be covered with the current DNBR margin. Accident analyses are also investigated that the dropped rod transient is shown to be limiting and relatively sensitive to bypass flow variation.

  • This paper presents in detail the hydraulic characteristic measurements using LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) in subchannels of a HANARO, KAERI research reactor, fuel bundle. The fuel bundle consists of 18 axially finned rods with 3 spacer grids and has a cylindrical configuration. Axial velocity and turbulent intensity were measured. The effects of the spacer grids on the turbulent flow were investigated using the experimental results. Pressure drops for each component of the fuel bundle were measured, and the friction factors of the fuel bundle and the loss coefficients for the spacer grids were estimated from the measured pressure drops. The turbulent thermal mixing phenomena were discussed.

  • The purposes of present work are to analyze the convective heat transfer with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis, and to optimize shape of the mixing vane using the analysis results. Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of inverse of heat transfer rate and friction loss. Two bend angles of mixing vane are selected as design variables. Thermal-hydraulic performances have been discussed and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function. The results show that the optimized geometry improves the heat transfer performance far downstream of the mixing vane.

  • In this paper, an algorithm to improve the optimal engine operation is suggested by increasing the CVT shift speed. By rearranging the CVT shift dynamic equation, it is found that the CVT shift speed depends on the line pressure as well as the primary pressure. Based on the shift dynamics, an algorithm to accomplish a faster shift speed is presented by increasing the line pressure. In order to apply the algorithm, dynamic models of the line pressure control valve and the ratio control valve are obtained by considering the CVT shift dynamics and model based controllers are designed. It is found from the simulation results that fuel economy can be improved by 2% in spite of the increased hydraulic loss due to the increased line pressure.

  • A PSV (pressurizer safety valve) popping test carried out in the early phases of a refueling outage may trigger a test-induced LOCA(loss of coolant accident) if a PSV fails to fully close and is stuck in a partially open position. According to a KSNP (Korea standard nuclear power plant) low power and shutdown PSA (probabilistic safety assessment), the failure of a high pressure safety injection (HPSI) accompanied by the failure of a PSV to fully close was identified as a dominant accident sequence with a significant impact on low power and shutdown risks (LPSR). In this study, we aim to investigate and verify a new means for mitigating this type of accident using a thermal-hydraulic analysis. In particular, we explore the applicability of an aggressive cool-down combined with operator actions. The results of the various sensitivity studies performed there will help reduce LPSR and improve Refueling outage safety.

  • This paper is to propose a concept and performance of the gravity engine which could extract energy from sea or river as a clean and renewable and sustainable power, the tidal or hydro-power. The vertical motion of the buoyancy cylinder of the present gravity engine is converted to the mechanical work directly without any hydraulic loss. The increased gravity potential during high tide is harnessed proportional to the length of the buoyancy cylinder times tidal height which is greater than the conventional tidal power using water mill. This energy amplification results from the net energy gain between the resource energy and the imposed energy to extract water out of the buoyancy cylinder. Its efficiency is higher than the conventional water mill due to its direct mechanical conversion.

  • This paper summarizes the tests performed in the ATLAS facility during its first two years of operation (2007${\sim}$2008). Two categories of tests have been performed successfully: (a) the reflood phase of the large-break loss-of-coolant accidents in a cold leg, and (b) the breaks in one of four direct vessel injection lines. Those tests contributed to understanding the unique thermal-hydraulic behavior, resolving the safety-related concerns and providing an evaluation of the safety analysis codes and methodology for the advanced pressurized water reactor, APR1400. Several important and interesting phenomena have been observed during the tests. In most cases, the ATLAS shows reasonable accident characteristics and conservative results compared with those predicted by one-dimensional safety analysis codes. A wide variety of small-break LOCA tests will be performed in 2009.

  • The present paper studies the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the rectangular supercritical natural circulation loop (SCNCL) using numerical model of one dimensional. Then the results of this model is confirmed with experimental and benchmark results. Variations with several geometric parameters like loop diameter, riser length, and heater length and operating conditions like heater inlet enthalpy, pressure, friction factor, and inlet and exit loss coefficient on steady-state performance are investigated for various orientations like HHHC, HHVC, VHVC and VHHC of the heater and cooler. The chances of existing static instability (Ledinegg excursion) has been investigated, which reveals that it can arise only in a low inlet enthalpy condition, far from the suggested various orientations of heater and cooler.
