  • The permeability characterization on the natural barrier for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste is very critical to evaluate total safety and performance assessment of disposal site. However, the confidence level in using previous hydraulic testing equipments consist of simple components to estimate rock mass permeability is not high enough to reflect in situ condition. The purpose of this research is to establish an advanced hydraulic testing equipment, which is applicable to deep borehole (up to 1,000 m), through the improvement of technical problems of previous packer systems. Especially, the straddle packer hydraulic testing equipment was designed to adopt both the hydraulic downhole shut-in valve(H-DHSIV) to minimize the wellbore storage effect and the real time data acquisition system to measure the pressure changes of test interval including its upper and lower parts. The results from this research lead to not only improve current technical level in the field of hydraulic testing but also provide important information to radioactive waste disposal technology development and site characterization project.

  • The influence of water salinity on the hydraulic conductivities of compacted bentonites with several dry densities were studied. The hydraulic conductivity increases with increasing salinity only when the dry density of bentonite is relatively low. The degree of increase becomes more remarkable at a lower dry density of bentonite. For bentonite with the density of 1.0 $Mg/m^3$ and 1.2 $Mg/m^3$, the hydraulic conductivity of the 0.4 M NaCl solution increases up to about 7 times and 3 times, respectively higher than that of freshwater. However, for the bentonite with a dry density higher than 1.4 $Mg/m^3$, the salinity has an insignificant effect on the hydraulic conductivity, and the hydraulic conductivity is nearly constant within the salinity range of 0.04 to 0.4 M NaCl. The pre-saturation of the bentonite specimen with freshwater has no significant influence on the hydraulic conductivity.

  • While geothermal energy provides the only base-load power among renewable energy sources, its development has been carried out predominantly in volcanic area. EGS (Enhanced Geothermal System) is a ubiquitous technology that can allow the geothermal power generation virtually in any area. This manuscript introduces the current state-of-the-art of EGS development in the world and presents the hydraulic stimulation technology and associated microseismicity which are key technical component in EGS. Finally this paper suggests the key research areas required in Korea for further development of EGS.

  • Hydraulic jump is typically designed to occur over low-haed dam spillways and weirs in the river. An important engineering application of the hydraulic jump is to dissipate the intense kinetic energy of the flows over such hydraulic structures. Turbulent flow and roller-like vortex riding up the free sureface of the jump cause most of the energy dissipation. We carry out a high resolution three-dimensional numerical simulations of a submerged hydraulic jump in a spillway and compare numerical results with a laboratory measurement obtained by the PIV. The numerical results further show the dynamic behavoirs of the inner and outer layers of the submerged wall-jet and the recirculating roller of the hydraulic jump.

  • Today it becomes a serious problem to exhaustion of a fossil fuel and air pollution by exhaust gases from road vehicles for environment preservation. To solve this problem, the developments of a hybrid vehicle have been processed for the purpose of reducing pollution and energy-savings. By the way, flywheel hybrid vehicle using variable pump/motor was proposed as one feasible hybrid system in place of hybrid vehicle system by the conventional storage battery. The proposed flywheel hybrid vehicle is composed of an accumulator or a flywheel as the energy generation and storage source and three variable hydraulic pump/motor as the energy transfer device. Flywheel has the characteristic of high...

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) studied the sodium-water reaction (SWR) minimized steam generator for the safety of the sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), and selected the copper bonded steam generator (CBSG) as the optimal concept. This paper introduces the conceptual design of the CBSG and the development of the CBSG sizing analyzer (CBSGSA). The CBSG consists of multiple heat transfer modules with a crossflow heat transfer configuration where sodium flows horizontally and water flows vertically. The heat transfer modules are stacked along a vertical direction to achieve the targeted large heat transfer capacity. The CBSGSA code was developed for the thermal-hydraulic analysis of the CBSG in a multi-pass crossflow heat transfer configuration. Finally, we conducted a preliminary sizing and rating analysis of the CBSG for the trans-uranium (TRU) core system using the CBSGSA code proposed by KAERI.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a load-sensing hydraulic servo system are complex and highly unstable. Another property of the system is that the setting value of pump compensator is closely related to energy efficiency as well as control performance of the system. This necessitates the development of an effective control algorithm which guarantees good control performance, stability and energy efficiency. This paper considers a suboptimal PID control for the velocity control problem of the load-sensing hydraulic servo system. The results of simulations studies and experiments show that the proposed suboptimal controller can produce much better control performance than nonoptimal controllers and give effective energy efficiency.

  • A new energy conversion system which converts wind energy directly to heat instead of transforming it to electric power beforehand is suggested in this study. The new energy conversion system is composed of two big parts divided by their functions. One of them is a wind turbine part, and another is the heat energy conversion part. The object of this study is confined only to the heat energy conversion part, so the wind turbine is replaced with an electric motor for the convenience of experiment. In the experimental process, pressure difference at the hydraulic pump, revolution speed of the hydraulic pump, temperature at a few points on the oil circuit and the water circuit are measured at time intervals of five minutes. And integral values of input energy to the system and stored energy in the system is investigated.
