The hydration of cement contributes to the performance characteristics of concrete, such as strength and durability. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of cement and its early properties, the particle size distribution (PSD) of cement varies considerably, and the effects of the particle size distribution of cement on the hydration process should be considered. In order to evaluate effects of PSD separately, experiments testing the isothermal heat generated during the hydration of cements with different particle size distributions but the same chemical composition have been carried out. The measurable hydration depth for cement hydration was proposed and deduced based on the experimental results, and a PSD hydration model was developed in this paper for simulating the effects of particle size distribution on the hydration process of cement. First, a reference hydration rate was derived from the isothermal heat generated by the hydration of ordinary Portland cement. Then, the model was extended to take into account the effect of water-to-cement ratio, hereinafter which was referred to as PSD hydration model. Finally, the PSD hydration model was applied to simulate experiments measuring the isothermal heat generated by the hydration of cement with different particle size distributions at different water-to-cement ratios. This showed that the PSD hydration model had simulated the effects of particle size distribution and water-to-cement ratio on the hydration process of cement with satisfactory accuracy.
In this study we mainly dealt with the effects of organic retarder(calcium lignosulfate) on the early hydration process of clinker minerals. From a consideration of the hydration process of tricalcium silicate $(C_3S)$ tricalcium silicate $(C_3S)$-tricalcium aluminate $(C_3A)$ tricalcium silicate $(C_3S)$-tetracalcium aluminof-errite $(C_4AF)$ systems with calcium lignosulfate the following results were obtained. 1. when 0.25wt% of CLS was added to $C_3S$ the hydration process was progressed normally but adding of 0.5wt% its hydration was greatly retarded. 2. The hydration of $C_3S$-$C_3A$ system was progressed normally up to 0.5wt% but by adding gypsum its hydration was retarded slightly. 3. The hydration of $C_3S$-$C_4AF$ system was greatly retarded even with 0.25wt% of CLS but by adding gypsum its hydration process was recovered normally.
Aluminum alloy(3003) can be dissolved during hydration process with hot tap water. In order to increase the stability of aluminum alloy, it was pretreated with anodization and phosphoric acid before hydration process. The effect of pretreatment on the surface property changes was analyzed with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and their results supported that the increase of hydroxyl group (-OH) on the surface formed during anodization and phosphorous acid treatment prevented the dissolution of aluminum alloy during hydration process at high temperature.
In this research, a developed microstructural model of cement particles was presented to describe the cement hydration procedure. To simplify the hydration process, the whole hydration was analyzed in a series of sub-steps. In each step, the hydration degree, as well as the microstructural size of the hydration cell, was calculated as a function of the radius of the unreacted cement particles. With the consideration of the water consumption and the reduction of the interfacial area between water and hydration products, the micro-level expressions of the cement hydration kinetics were established. Then the heat released and temperature history of the concrete was carried out with the hydration degree obtained from each sub-steps. The equivalent age method based on the Arrhenius law was introduced in this research. Based on the equivalent age method, a maturity model was applied to describe the evolution of the mechanical properties of the material during the hydration process. The finite element program ANSYS was used to analyze the temperature field in concrete structures. Then thermal stress field was calculated using the elasticity modulus obtained from code formulate. And the risk of thermal cracking was estimated by the comparison of thermal stress and concrete tensile strength.

This paper presents a numerical model which can predict degree of hydration of cement mineral component, such as $C_{3}S$, $C_{2}S$, $C_{3}A$, $C_{4}AF$ and microstructure of hydrating cement as a function of water to cement ratio, cement particle size distribution, cement mineral components and temperature. In this model cement particles are parked randomly in cell space and hydration process is described using a multi-component integrated kinetic model. The simulation result of degree of hydration of cement mineral component agrees well with experiment result. The content of cement hydration product, such as CSH and CH can be obtained as an accompanied result during hydration process. By introducing of equal-area projection method, water withdrawl mechanism and contact area among cement particles can be considered in detail. By using proposed method, pore size distribution of hydrating cement is predicted.
In this study, gel powder which had relatively high hydration reactivity in CaO and P2O5 rich composition of CaO-P2O5-SiO2-H2O system was prepared by sol-gel process and its hydrated specimen was manufactured. The it was investigated to appropriate calcination temperature in sol-gel process which hydrated specimen of gel powder have proven to strength and the effect of factors influenced strength in hydration process. The major product of before and after hydration reaction was hydroxyapatite, and crystalline phase of C-S-H was already formed during gelation process. After hydration reaction of pressed specimen, crystalline phase of C-S-P-H was formed. It was hydrated product of silicocarnotite (5CaO.P2O5.SiO2). Gel phases of C-S-H and C-S-P-H occured as a result of partial substitution of amorphous silica by P2O5 was formed. The strength of hydrated hardened body is developed by strong bonding and bridging between the gel phases of C-S-H or C-S-P-H and the crystalline products such as hydroxyapatite, Ca(OH)2 C-S-H and C-S-P-H. In addition, the ultrafine gel powder have an great effect on increase of hydration reaction.

This work evaluated the extractability of tobacco stem biomass for the papermaking type Reconstituted Tobacco Sheet(RTS). The effects of the soaking conditions on the hydration of stem biomass and the effects of the hydrated state on the mechanical extraction were investigated. In order to simulate the mechanical expression process of a papermaking type RTS mill, for example, the screw press process, the novel mechanical pressing analyzer was developed for this study. The hydration of stem biomass by soaking process was greatly affected by the soaking time and the soaking temperature. The longer soaking time and the higher soaking temperature resulted in the higher hydrated stem biomass. Since the higher hydrated stem had more combined water in the inner structure and resulted in the more flexible structure, the higher hydrated stem leaded to the more compressed filter cake and the higher water contents in the filter cake after the mechanical pressing. The pilot pulping experiments showed the difference in hydration and extractability between burley and bright tobacco stem. The bulkier structure of the burley stem resulted in the faster hydration by pilot pulping and leaded to the larger reduction in water soluble components. And the hydration process showed the major influence on the separation efficiency of water soluble components.
Mg crowns were manufactured using domestic dolomite (Ca·Mg(CO3)2) (20~30 mm). In order to manufacture the calcined dolomite (CaO·MgO), (a) electric furnace (950 ℃, 480 min) and (b) microwave furnace (950 ℃, 60 min) processes were used. As a result of XRD analysis, it was analyzed as (a) CaO 56.9 wt%, MgO 43.1 wt% by electric furnace process and (b) CaO 55 wt%, MgO 45 wt% by microwave furnace process. Even when the decarbonation reaction time of dolomite was shortened by 1/8 in microwave furnace process compare with electric furnace process, the calcined dolomite could be produced. The hydration reaction (ASTM C 110) is a standard for the hydration reactivity of calcined dolomite, and the calcined dolomite produced by electric furnace process showed a high hydration reactivity (max temp 79.8 ℃/1.5 minutes). Such hydration reactivity was occurred by only CaO hydration reaction and that was confirmed by XRD analysis. The calcined dolomite produced by microwave furnace process showed low hydration reactivity (max temp 81.7 ℃/19.5 minutes). Such low hydration reactivity was occurred by CaO and MgO hydration reaction due to the hydration reaction of CaO thereafter occurring of the hydration reaction of MgO, and that was confirmed by XRD analysis. The prepared Mg crown were 58.8 g and 74.6 g by electric furnace and microwave furnace processes, respectively, under the reaction conditions of 1,230 ℃, 60 min, 5 × 10-2 torr by silicothermic reduction.

Hydration is the main reason for the growth of the material properties. A exact parameter to control the chemical and physical process is not the time, but the degree of hydration. Therefore, it is reasonable that development all material properties should be formulated in terms of degree of hydration. Mathematical formulation of degree of hydration is based on combination of reaction rate functions. The effect of moisture conditions as well as temperature on the rate of reaction is considered in the degree of hydration model. This effect is subdivided into two contributions: water shortage and water distribution. The former is associated with the effect of on the progress of hydration. The water needed for progress of hydration do not exist and there is not enough space for the reaction products to form. The latter is associated with the effect of free capillary water distribution in the pore system. Physically absorption layer does not contribute to progress of hydration and only free water is available for further hydration.
