Effects of Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea L.) Hydrates on Quality Characteristics of Reduced-salt, Reduced-fat Frankfurters

  • Abstract This study evaluated the effects of adding glasswort hydrate containing non-meat ingredient (GM, carboxy methyl cellulose; GC, carrageenan; GI, isolated soy protein; GS, sodium caseinate) on the quality characteristics of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. The pH and color evaluation showed significant differences, depending on the type of glasswort hydrate added (p<0.05). In the raw batters and cooked frankfurters, the addition of glasswort hydrate decreased the redness and increased the yellowness in comparison with frankfurters without glasswort hydrate. The reduction in salt and fat content significantly increased cooking loss and decreased hardness, tenderness and juiciness (p<0.05). Glasswort hydrate containing non-meat ingredient improved cooking loss, water holding capacity, emulsion stability, hardness, and viscosity of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. The GM treatment had the highest myofibiliar protein solubility among all treatments, which was associated with emulsion stability and viscosity. The GC treatment had higher values for all texture parameters than the control. In the sensory evaluation, the addition of glasswort hydrate with non-meat ingredient improved tenderness and juiciness of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. GM, GC, and GI treatments improved not only the physicochemical properties but also the sensory characteristics of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters. The results indicated that the use of glasswort hydrate containing non-meat ingredient was improved the quality characteristics of reduced-salt, reduced-fat frankfurters.

The Synthesis Mechanism of BaTiO3 Nano Particle at Low Temperature by Hydrate Salt Method (Hydrate Salt법을 이용한 Nano BaTiO3 저온합성 메커니즘)

  • $BaTiO_3$ nano powder can be synthesized by hydrate salt method at $120^{\circ}C$ in air. Decreasing the thickness of thick film, the nano dielectric particle is needed in electronic ceramics. However, the synthesis of $BaTiO_3$ nano particle at low temperature in air and their mechanism were not reported enough. And ultrasonic treatment can be tried because of low temperature process in air. Therefore, in this study, the $BaTiO_3$ nano powder was synthesised with the synthesis time and ultrasonic treatment at $120^{\circ}C$ in air. In the synthesis process, the effects of process were evaluated. From the experimental observation, the synthesis mechanism was proposed. The homogeneous $BaTiO_3$ particle was synthesised by KOH salt solution at $120^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. It was conformed that the ultrasonic treatment effected on the increase of synthesis rate. After cutting the salt powder using FIB, $BaTiO_3$ nano particles observed homogeneously in the cross-section of the salt particle.

Experimental Study on the Inhibition Effect of PVCap to Prevent Formation of Hydrate in Subsea Flowline (해저 유동관내 하이드레이트 형성 방지를 위한 PVCap의 억제효과에 관한 실험 연구)

  • This study presents the hydrate induction time of PVCap according to subcooling temperature, salt concentration, and MEG concentration in order to analyze the inhibition effect of PVCap in various production environments of offshore gas fields. A high-pressure hydrate generator was made for the hydrate formation experiments. It was verified that the apparatus had sufficient reliability by comparing the results of hydrate equilibrium conditions and induction time from the apparatus with published reference data. As the subcooling temperature increased from 6.1℃ to 12.1℃, the induction time of PVCap concentration of 0.1~1 wt% decreased. When the salt concentration increased from 3 wt% to 7 wt%, the induction time was reduced by up to 78% under the condition of 0.5 wt% PVCap due to polymer structure degradation by salt effect. In the case of HHI (hybrid hydrate inhibitor) made by mixing MEG 10 wt% and PVCap, the change in induction time was not large compared to PVCap 1 wt% due to the under-inhibition effect. On the other hand, the hydrate inhibition efficiency of HHI with MEG 20wt% increased 1.7 times compared to PVCap.

  • It was studied to prepare anhydrous magnesium chloride which could used as the raw material of a fused salt electrolysis of magnesium by dehydration of magnesium chloride hydrate. The dehydration was carried out in a tube furnace at $350{\sim}580^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that magnesium chloride hydrate was oxdized to magnesia through the dehydration in ambient atmosphere, but anhydrous magnesium chloride could be obtained in hydrogen chloride gas atmosphere. And the crystallity of the product increased with increasing temperature and time of dehydration. All of the un-reacted hydrogen chloride gases which were generated during the dehydration in hydrogen chloride gas atmosphere could be recovered as hydrochloric solution, and it could be reused for chlorination of magnesia to prepare magnesium chloride hydrate.

Effect of gas hydrate process on energy saving for reverse osmosis process in seawater desalination plant (해수담수화플랜트에서 가스 하이드레이트 공정 도입을 통한 역삼투 공정의 에너지 절감 효과)

  • Gas hydrate (GH) process is a new desalination technology, where GH is a non- stoichiometric crystalline inclusion compounds formed by water and a number of gas molecules. Seawater GH is produced in a low temperature and a high pressure condition and they are separated from the concentrated seawater. The drawback of the GH process so far is that salt contents contained in its product does not meet the fresh water quality standard. This means that the GH process is not a standalone process for seawater desalination and it needs the help of other desalting process like reverse osmosis (RO). The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of GH process on energy saving for RO process in seawater desalination. The GH product water quality data, which were obtained from a literature, were used as input data for RO process simulation. The simulation results show that the energy saving effect by the GH process is in a range of 68 % to 81 %, which increases as the salt removal efficiency of the GH process increases. Boron (B) and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations of the final product of the hybrid process of GH and RO were also investigated through the RO process simulation to find relavant salt rejection efficiency of the GH process. In conclusion, the salt rejection efficiency of the GH process should exceed at least 78% in order to meet the product water quality standards and to increase the energy saving effect.

Phase Equilibria and Formation Behaviors of Methane Hydrate with Ethylene Glycol and Salts (에틸렌글리콜과 염이 포함된 메탄 하이드레이트의 상평형과 형성 거동)

  • In this study, phase equilibria and formation behaviors of methane hydrate containing mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) and salts (sodium chloride, NaCl; sodium bromide, NaBr; sodium iodide, NaI) are investigated. Equilibrium conditions of methane hydrate containing MEG and salts are measured in a temperature range 272~283 K and a pressure range 3.5~11 MPa. Hydrate inhibition performance in the presence of additives can be summarized as follows: methane hydrate containing (5 wt% NaCl + 10 wt% MEG) > (5 wt% NaBr + 10 wt% MEG) > (5 wt% NaI + 10 wt% MEG). Formation behaviors of methane hydrate with MEG and salts are investigated for analyzing the induction time, gas consumption amount and growth rate of methane hydrates. There are no significant changes in the induction time during methane hydrate formation, but the addition of MEG and salts solution during hydrate formation can affect the gas consumption amount and growth rate.

Dissolution of degummed Antheraea yamamai silkworm cocoon

  • Dissolution of Antheraea yamamai silkworm cocoon was carried out in various solvent systems with various dissolving conditions including dissolution salts, salt concentration, dissolving temperature, and time. General chaotropic salt for Bombyx mori silk fibroin does not work for A. yamamai silkworm cocoon. Lithium bromide 9.3 M at $100^{\circ}C$ also does not work to dissolve wild silkworm cocoon. However, 9 M of lithium thiocyanate treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ induced 100% dissolution of wild silkworm cocoon. But it could not be dissolved lower than $60^{\circ}C$. Like lithium thiocyanate, less than $60^{\circ}C$ treatment with molten calcium nitrate 4 hydrate could not dissolve wild silkworm cocoon. As the dissolution temperature increased up to $100^{\circ}C$, the solubility of wild one was reached over 90%. SDS-PAGE showed broad tailing stream pattern that means the molecule of wild silk was depolymerized with dissolution temperature and time. From the above results, the best chaotropic salt for A.yamamai silkworm cocoon is calcium nitrate 4 hydrate.

Evaluation of energy consumption of gas hydrate and reverse osmosis hybrid system for seawater desalination (해수담수화 공정을 위한 가스하이드레이트-역삼투 공정의 에너지 소모량 평가)

  • Gas hydrate desalination process is based on a liquid to solid (Gas Hydrate, GH) phase change followed by a physical process to separate the GH from the remaining salty water. The GH based desalination process show 60.5-90% of salt rejection, post treatment like reverse osmosis (RO) process is needed to finally meet the product water quality. In this study, the energy consumption of the GH and RO hybrid system was investigated. The energy consumption of the GH process is based on the cooling and heating of seawater and the heat of GH formation reaction while RO energy consumption is calculated using the product of pressure and flow rate of high pressure pumps used in the process. The relation between minimum energy consumption of RO process and RO recovery depending on GH salt rejection, and (2) energy consumption of electric based GH process can be calculated from the simulation. As a result, energy consumption of GH-RO hybrid system and conventional seawater RO process (with/without enregy recovery device) is compared. Since the energy consumption of GH process is too high, other solution used seawater heat and heat exchanger instead of electric energy is suggested.

Evaluation of Hydrate Inhibition Performance of Water-soluble Polymers using Torque Measurement and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (토크 측정과 시차주사열량계를 이용한 수용성 고분자 화합물의 하이드레이트 저해 성능 평가)

  • In this work, hydrate inhibition performance of water-soluble polymers including pyrrolidone, caprolactam, acrylamide types were evaluated using torque measurement and high pressure differential scanning calorimeter (HP ${\mu}$-DSC). The obtained experimental results suggest that the studied polymers represent the kinetic hydrate inhibition (KHI) performance. 0.5 wt% polyvinylcaprolactam (PVCap) solution shows the hydrate onset time of 34.4 min and subcooling temperature of 15.9 K, which is better KHI performance than that of pure water - hydrate onset time of 12.3 min and subcooling temperature of 6.0 K. 0.5 wt% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solution shows the hydrate onset time of 27.6 min and the subcooling temperature of 13.2 K while polyacrylamide-co-acrylic acid partial sodium salt (PAM-co-AA) solution shows less KHI performance than PVP solution at both 0.5 and 5.0 wt%. However, PAM-co-AA solution shows slow growth rate and low hydrate amount than PVCap. In addition to hydrate onset and growth condition, torque change with time was investigated as one of KHI evaluation methods. 0.5 wt% PVCap solution shows the lowest average torque of 6.4 N cm and 0.5 wt% PAM-co-AA solution shows the average torque of 7.2 N cm. For 0.5 wt% PVP solution, it increases 11.5 N cm and 5.0 wt% PAM-co-AA solution shows the maximum average torque of 13.4 N cm, which is similar to the average torque of pure water, 15.2 N cm. Judging from the experimental results obtained by both an autoclave and a HP ${\mu}$-DSC, the PVCap solution shows the best performance among the KHIs in terms of delaying hydrate nucleation. From these results, it can be concluded that the torque change with time is useful to identify the flow ability of tested solution, and the further research on the inhibition of hydrate formation can be approached in various aspects using a HP ${\mu}$-DSC.

New Crystal form of Valsartan Dipotassium Salt (발사르탄 이칼륨염의 신규 결정형)

  • A new crystal form of valsartan dipotassium was isolated by recrystallization using the one-pot method. The new crystal form was identified as a monohydrate form ($C_{24}H_{27}N_5O_3K_2.H_2O$) and characterized by diffential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray powder diffractometry (PXRD). The new crystal data demonstrated to be clearly different from those known for the tetrahydrate form ($C_{24}H_{27}N_5O_3K_2.4H_2O$). It was observed that the monohydrate of vasartan dipotassium salt was completely dissolved in water within 1 hour and its dissolution rate was much faster than anhydrous free form of valsartan.
