Tribological properties of fiber composite materials were measured and wear resistant hybrid structure was proposed based upon the understanding of tribological behavior of the composite materials. Unidirectional composites with glass fibers, carbon fibers, and aramid fibers were tested for tribological properties in order to propose a wear resistant hybrid structure. Hybrid composites which contain carbon and aramid fibers were prepared, the specimens were sliced by a water-jet cutter, and friction and wear properties were measured. An experimental set-up was designed and built for the friction and wear test of the composite specimens. Unidirectional fiber composite and hybrid composite specimens were tested to evaluated the tribological behavior for biomimetic applications. It is observed that the friction and wear behavior of fiber composites depends upon fiber orientation, sliding speed, and type of reinforcing fibers.
In VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) process, the permeability generally controls the filling time of the resin and it also affects the void characteristics of the fiber composite. In this study, carbon and glass fiber inter-layered hybrid composites (carbon fiber centered stack) with an epoxy matrix were fabricated by VARTM process and evaluated the resin flow and macro void characteristics. The permeability of glass fiber was higher than that of carbon fiber used in this study. Using Darcy's equation, the permeability of hybrid composites could be predicted and experimentally confirmed. After curing, the macro void content of hybrid composites was investigated using image analyzer. The calculated filling time was well agreed with experimental result and the void content was significantly changed in hybrid composites.
This paper describes the results of experiments to analyze the free vibration of the laminated composite and hybrid composite plates with various shapes and boundary conditions. The materials of specimens were the carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), the glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), the GFRP-Aluminum hybrid composite and the CFRP-CFRP hybrid composite. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with various shapes were experimentally obtained by impact exciting test using an impact hammer and an accelerometer. The experimental results were presented with normalized frequency parameters. The effects of composite material properties, fiber orientation angles, various geometrical shapes and boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics of composite plates were evaluated. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis was carried out, and was well agreed with experimental results.
A novel manufacturing method for hybrid composites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and aramid fibers is proposed. To disperse the CNTs in the epoxy matrix with the presence of aramid fibers, CNT/polyethyleneoxide (PEO) composites are prepared and utilized because PEO is miscible in the epoxy resin. After thin films are made of the CNT/PEO composite and placed together with the aramid fibers, the epoxy resin is infused to them. The PEO is dissolved in the epoxy and then the CNTs are dispersed in the PEO/epoxy matrix between aramid fibers before the pre-heated matrix is cured. It is found that the PEO is completely miscible with the epoxy resin and CNTs are dispersed well in the space between the aramid fibers.

Three dimensional circular braided Glass/Aramid hybrid fabric/epoxy resin composite was fabricated. FBG sensor was embedded along the braid yam in order to monitor the internal dimensional changes of the 3-D braid composite. The amount of cure and thermal shrinkage of epoxy resin was also determined using FBG sensor system. FBG sensors with different grating length were embedded and their response were compared. The thermo-optic coefficient of FBG sensor was measured by several preliminary experiments. The internal strain that measured by FBG sensor and electric strain gauge was compared during compressive test. The released residual strain of the fabricated tubular composite was estimated using cutting method. The internal strain of the composite was estimated using FBG sensor system, and the result was compared with the value from electric strain gauge. It was found that FBG sensor system is a very useful technique to investigate inside region of complicated structure.

A finite element method based on the two-dimensional progressive failure analysis considering material nonlinearity is presented for characterizing the strength and failure of the unidirectional-fabric hybrid laminated composite joints under pin loading. The 8-node laminated shell element is incorporated in the updated Lagrangian formulation. Failure criteria including the Maximum Stress and Tsai-Wu are used in conjunction with the complete unloading stiffness degradation method. For the verification, joint tests are conducted for the specimens with two different ply-number ratios of UD composite to fabric composite. Although there are some differences depending on ply-number ratios, the finite element model using the maximum stress criterion considering nonlinear material behavior predicts the failure strength best.

In this work, a hybrid composite proceeding bearing (HCJB) composed of carbon/phenolic laminated composite bush and steel housing was designed for marine vessels because the composite proceeding bearing reduces the possibility of the seizure problem between the proceeding and bearing. The two components of bearing were assembled by interference fit joining method and a series of durability tests were conducted using the laboratory bench with the lubricants of SAE 30 oil, water, and sea water. That the HCJB was found reliable under the interference fitting loads and environmental temperature change.
The optimum design of hybrid laminated composites for iso-strain structure has been studied by controling fiber orientations and thicknesses of each layer. Fiber orientations and thicknesses of each layer for iso-strain structure were designed. Combining the laminates of each layer of different reinforcing material, the constitutions of hybrid laminated composite for iso-strain structure were obtained. All these calculations were formed on computer systems, automatically for the hybridization. Using the data of some specific laminated composite such as glass and aramid reinforced composites, the constitutions of hybrid laminated composites for iso-strains structure were designed and verified by lamination theory. The strains of each layer of hybrid laminated composites are calculated and they turned out to be good agreements with the results obtained lamination theory.
This article describes a simple and cost effective fabrication procedure by using hand lay-up technique that is employed for the manufacturing of thin-walled axi-symmetric composite shell structures with carbon, glass and hybrid woven fabric composite materials. The hand lay-up technique is very commonly used in aerospace and marine industries for making the complicated shell structures. A generic fabrication procedure is presented in this paper aimed at manufacture of plain Carbon Fabric Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Glass Fabric Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) shells using hand lay-up process. This paper delivers a technical breakthrough in fabrication of composite shell structures without any joints and wrinkling. The manufacture of stiffened CFRP shells, laminated CFRP shells and hybrid (carbon/glass/epoxy) composite shells which are valued by the aerospace industry for their high strength-to-weight ratio under axial loading have also been addressed in this paper. A fabrication process document which describes the major processing steps of the composite shell manufacturing process has been presented in this paper. A study of microstructure of the glass fabric/epoxy composite, carbon fabric/epoxy composite and hybrid carbon/glass/fabric epoxy composites using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) has been also carried out in this paper.

Mechanical properties of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites. Intermetallic compound formed by reaction between molten aluminum and reinforcing powder was uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3$NI using EDS and X-ray diffraction analysis. Microhardness and flexural strength of hybrid composites were higher than that of (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composite. In-Situ fracture tests were Conducted on (15%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al Composites and (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites to identify the microfracture process. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al composites, microcracks were initiated mainly at the short fiber / matrix interfaces. As the loading was continued, the crack propagated mainly along the separated interfacial regions and the well developed shear bands. It was identified from the in-situ fracture test of (10%$AI_20_3{\cdot}SiO_2$+5%Ni)/Al hybrid composites, microcracks were initiated mainly by the short fiber/matrix interfacial debonding. The crack proceeded mainly through the intermetallic compound clusters
