Interactive effect of dietary levels of calcium and 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 on the performance, serum biochemical concentration and digestibility of laying hens from 61 to 70 weeks of age

  • Objective: The present research was conducted to evaluate the interactive effect of dietary concentration of calcium (Ca) and 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25OHD3) on the performance, blood composition and digestibility of laying hens. Methods: A total of 540 Hy-line brown laying hens aged 61 to 70 weeks were randomly allotted in a 3×3 factorial arrangement, consisting of three levels of 25OHD3 (0, 25, and 50 ㎍/kg) and three levels of Ca (3.5%, 4.0%, and 4.5%). All diets had basal concentration of 3,000 IU/kg of vitamin D3 including the 2,800 kcal/kg of metabolic energy and 16% of crude protein. Results: The results showed that interactive effect (p<0.05) between Ca and 25OHD3 was such that dietary 25OHD3 linearly increased interleukin-6 at all levels of Ca inclusion. Interaction (p<0.05) occurred with the highest parathyroid hormone in laying hens that received dietary concentration of Ca (3.5%) with 25OHD3 (50 ㎍/kg), and Ca (4.0%) with 25OHD3 (50 ㎍/kg). Egg production and egg weight significantly (p<0.05) increased in the 4.5% Ca group compared to the 3.5% to 4.0% Ca groups. Egg shell thickness and tibia bone length also increased (p<0.05) in groups fed a high-Ca diet (4.0% to 4.5%). Phosphorus digestibility significantly (p<0.05) increased along with dietary Ca level. Among the tested 25OHD3 groups, higher (p<0.05) egg production and tibia thickness were present in hens fed 50 ㎍/kg of 25OHD3. Furthermore, Ca digestibility serum Ca and 25OHD3 were significantly increased in group offered 50 ㎍/kg of 25OHD3. Conclusion: The results gathered in this study indicate that dietary concentrations of 4.0% to 4.5% Ca and 50 ㎍/kg 25OHD3 improve the performance of hens from 61 to 70 weeks of age.

Differences in Psychopathology and Effectiveness of Individual Counselling According to Learning Environment of Agricultural Specialized College Students (농업계 특수전문대학 학생들의 학습 환경에 따른 정신병리 차이와 개인상담의 효과검증)

  • This study is aimed at researching on psychopathological characteristics of agriculture-specialized college students, in a specific educational environment, consulting some students who show maladjusted characteristics, verifying its effects and providing basic data for college life instructions. The complete survey MMPI was conducted for 676 freshmen and juniors attending K agriculture-specialized college located in Jeollabuk-do. To analyze the results, basic statistics, bivariate correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were implemented. The results of this study are as follows; First, the level of overall clinical scale was lower than 50 points, standard point, and freshmen showed higher depression (D), hysteria (Hy) and psychasthenia (Pt) in general. Such results are different from the other study results. It is considered an anxiety in early stage, resulted from a living in a dormitory. For the juniors who came back from one-year practice, anxiety about employment seems little because they are already employed. Second, The effects of personal consultation for maladjusted students were proved (p<.01). The students who got consultation showed improvement effect from 'very bad condition' to 'considerable depression', which is low score. This study has a meaning in preventing from any accident, by screening maladjusted students who are supposed to learn in a specific situation, by relieving their symptoms through consultation and letting them concentrate on learning.

A comprehensive longitudinal study of gut microbiota dynamic changes in laying hens at four growth stages prior to egg production

  • Objective: The poultry industry is a primary source of animal protein worldwide. The gut microbiota of poultry birds, such as chickens and ducks, is critical in maintaining their health, growth, and productivity. This study aimed to identify longitudinal changes in the gut microbiota of laying hens from birth to the pre-laying stage. Methods: From a total of 80 Hy-Line Brown laying hens, birds were selected based on weight at equal intervals to collect feces (n = 20 per growth) and ileal contents (n = 10 per growth) for each growth stage (days 10, 21, 58, and 101). The V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene were amplified after extracting DNA from feces and ileal contents. Amplicon sequencing was performed using Illumina, followed by analysis. Results: Microbial diversity increased with growth stages, regardless of sampling sites. Microbial community analysis indicated that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in the feces and ileal. The abundance of Lactobacillus was highest on day 10, and that of Escherichia-shigella was higher on day 21 than those at the other stages at the genus level (for the feces and ileal contents; p<0.05). Furthermore, Turicibacter was the most abundant genus after changing feed (for the feces and ileal contents; p<0.05). The fecal Ruminococcus torques and ileal Lysinibacillus were negatively correlated with the body weights of chickens (p<0.05). Conclusion: The gut microbiota of laying hens changes during the four growth stages, and interactions between microbiota and feed may be present. Our findings provide valuable data for understanding the gut microbiota of laying hens at various growth stages and future applied studies.

A Study on the Degradation Properties of DGEBA/TETA Epoxy System for Restoration of Ceramics by Temperature (도자기 복원용 DGEBA/TETA Epoxy계 수지의 온도에 의한 열화 특성 연구)

  • This study identified degradation properties by temperature stress with Araldite$^{(R)}$ AY103-1/HY956 used for ceramics. Tensile and compressive strength of durability increased for 6,480 hours at temperature of $34{\sim}45^{\circ}C$. In stability of external stress and temperature, compressive strength is superior to tensile strength, it requires conservation plans considering strength properties and stress of restoration materials. The tensile shear strength of adhesion properties decreased for 4,320 hours at temperature of $40{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In ceramics with porosity, environments under isothermal-isohumidity are important because interfacial properties of adherend are concerned with performance variation. Glossiness decreased for 6,480 hours at temperature of $34{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ and color difference increased. Gloss stability was superior and color stability was weak, which requires improvement of optical properties. In artifacts on display in museums, there is concern about temperature rise on restoration materials by lighting therefore, it needs to minimize change in physical properties by exposure environments.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of distilled water, pH, uv-irradiation, carrier, emulsifier and organic solvent on the stability of butachlor formulations in the course of storage. The uv-irradiation increased the decomposition rate of butachlor formulations in the order of emulsifiable concentrate, sand coated granular and zeolite adsorbed granular. Decomposition of butachlor emulsion was not affected by water and pH. Decomposition of butachlor emulsifiable concentrate which were prepared with various organic solvents at $50^{\circ}C$ was higher in the polar organic solvents than in the non-polar organic solvent. Decomposition of butachlor-emulsifiable concentrate emulsified in Tween-60 was higher than in Hy-620C or Newkalgen-MC.

  • Today, design is not free from fashion, which emerges and vanishes temporarily, and aims at equalization. As a result, products quickly become obsolete because of fashion. This means that the span of products is determined by a social concept, which is not clarified, regardless of their functions. Usable products will gradually disappear from us and it will cause serious environmental problems, unless we can find out measures against fashion. As such, it is important to study the characteristics of the shaker's design in this circumstance. The Shaker's community has a distinguishable difference from other general societies. Temporary fashion and misled information cannot interfere with their consciousness. Religion, the life and the principle of design have developed on the same level in their community. Especially, any decoration or the difference of materials is not allowed in shaker's design. It reflects their thinking that all people are equal in the sight of God. Therefore, any decoration for social and economical superiority can not be used. Through this consciousness, they can be free from fashion or decoration. They, also, believe that they can reach perfection through practicality and simplicity. The reason why shaker's design is not disturbed by fashion is that their belief is involved in their design. Consequently, if religious or conscious contents are primarily set up, design can be free from fashion and products can be used for a long time.

Acoustic Analysis for Thermal Environment-related Vocalizations in Laying Hens (산란계의 열환경별 특이음에 대한 음성학적 분석)

  • The aim of this study was to divide vocalizations of laying hens (Hy-Line Brown) into general vocalizations (GVs), heat stress-related vocalization (HSV), and cold stress-related vocalizations (CSVs) and to determine if they are classified by the discriminant function analysis method. Thirty laying hens, 65-wk-old, were recorded using digital video recorders 2 times from 10:00 to 14:00 h in each thermal environment (thermoneutral: $22.0{\pm}1.8^{\circ}C$, too hot: $32.0{\pm}2.0^{\circ}C$, too cold: $8.0{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C)$ after a 7 day acclimation period. When the laying hens were not recorded, they were kept in thermoneutral conditions. The GVs, HSV, and CSVs were divided based on the shapes of spectrums and spectrograms. The GVs, HSV, and CSVs were identified as 5, 1, and 3 types, respectively. Pitch, intensity, duration, formant 1, formant 2, formant 3, and formant 4 among the thermal environment-related vocalizations were significantly different (P<0.001). The discrimination rate determined by discriminant function analysis was 86.2%. These results suggest that HSV and CSVs are present and may be used as an indicator of the thermal environment.

A Preliminary Study for the Development of the Korean Version of the Daily Stress Inventory(DSI) (한국어판 매일 스트레스 평가서 개발을 위한 예비연구)

  • As a preliminary step to develop the Daily stress Inventory(DSI) for assessing minor stressors frequently experienced in everyday lift. We examined the reliability and validity of the DSI. The Daily Stress Inventory(DSI), the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), the Social Readjustment Rating Scale(SRRS) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI) were administered to 111 college students. Compared with the weekly DSI Event, Impact and I/E ratio scores of the American college students, the weekly event and I/E ratio scores of the Korean college students were significantly higher but weekly Impact score was lower. The internal consistency reliability of the DSI as computed by Cronbach alpha was .98. The DSI I/E ratio scores were significantly correlated with the scores of State Anxiety$({\gamma}=.27)$ and Trait Anxiety${\gamma}=.24)$, but not with BDI scores. And the SSRS scores were not significantly correlated to the DSI Event or Impact and In ratio scores. Significant correlations were revealed between the DSI Impact scores and the Sc and Ma scales of the MMPI. And the correlation between the DSI I/E ratio scores and the L, D, Hy, Pd and Pa scales of the MMPI was also significant. But no significant correlation was found between the DSI Event scores and all the scales of the MMPI. This study suggests that the DSI can be a reliable and valid tool to assess the minor stress frequently experienced in everyday life future study should be directed to obtain normative data based on more varied and larger population. Especially gathering additional evidences for the validity of the DSI using other minor stressor scale will be required.

Effect of social order, perch, and dust-bath allocation on behavior in laying hens

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different social ranking order (SRO) and the enrichments (perch and dust-bath) allocation (EA) on behavior of laying hens in furnished cages. Methods: Total experimental period was 4 weeks. There were 216 Hy-line brown layers beak-trimmed at 1 d of age and selected randomly at 14 weeks of age from a commercial farm, and randomly divided into 36 cages with 6 hens in each cage. High enrichments (perch and dust-bath) allocation (HEA) and low enrichments (perch and dust-bath) allocation (LEA) were provided. Video observations of behavior were obtained from the focal hens between 14 and 18 weeks of age and perching, dust-bathing and other general behaviors of the hens with different social orders were measured. Results: Perching behavior of high SRO hens (HSR) were significantly higher than that of medium SRO hens (MSR), and that of the MSR were significantly higher than that of low SRO hens (LSR) (p<0.01), except for lying on perch (p>0.05). The hens in the high EA cage (HEAC) showed more lying behavior on perch than those in the low EA cage (LEAC) (p<0.01). The different SRO and EA did not affect dust-bathing behavior except vertical wing-shaking behavior (p<0.05). The LEA did not affect general behaviors (p>0.05), except standing and preening behaviors (p<0.01 and p<0.05), of which the hens in the HEAC showed less standing (p<0.01) and more preening behavior than the hens in the LEAC. Conclusion: The SRO of laying hens has a significant effect on the perching behaviors, but SRO and EA have little effect on dust-bathing and general behaviors.
