  • The current study analyzed appropriateness of abandoned rice paddy wetlands as habitats for the Amphibia by assessing functions and value of abandoned rice paddy wetlands within land development districts as a habitat for living creatures and researching into the Amphibia living in the subject districts. For this purpose, the study designated abandoned rice paddy wetlands within Hwaseong A District and Pangyo B District under land development as subject lands. Those wetlands went through succession after abandonment of farming. Detailed study results are as follows. From classification of wetland types and an analysis of their characteristics, it was found that herbaceous plants such as smartweed communities, horsetail communities and reed communities, and woody plants such as pussy willow communities appeared in both districts. These abandoned rice paddy wetlands shows typical characteristics of palustrine wetlands. As a result of a vegetation structure research, it was observed that succession has been progressed for at least over 2~3 years. In assessment of wetland functions by item, it was found that they are developing into fine wetlands in terms of functions because they are ranked over Moderate Class except separate distance from streams. Also from a research into animals living in the abandoned rice paddy wetlands, it was found that main inhabitants are Rana nigromaculata,Rana dybowskii, Hyla japonica, Bufo bufo gargarizans, etc. It can be confirmed that the abandoned rice paddy wetlands are providing appropriate conditions as habitats to the Amphibia in a view that those species have life cycles of inhabitation (shores and wetlands) - egg-laying (rice paddy, puddles and swampy places) - hibernation (rice field banks and swampy places). From this point of view, it was found that abandoned rice paddy wetlands that developed because of abandonment of farming can be used as means to improve structure and functions of habitats.

  • The yellow crystalline material present in yellow and green glass beads excavated from sites in the Baekje region of Korea was previously analyzed through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, revealing that the yellow crystalline material was $PbSnO_3$. This material is a pigment that is rarely seen in the Korean peninsula. Furthermore, some studies have been published on the provenance of lead in this material, which revealed no relationship to Korea, China, or Japan. In this study, we collected all accessible results of analyses on the lead isotope ratio of yellow and green glass beads excavated from the Korean peninsula, specifically from 7 sites in the Baekje region(located in the vicinity of Seoul, Wanju, Hwaseong, Osan, Gongju, Buyeo, and Iksan) and 2 sites in the Silla region(located in the vicinity of Gyeongju and Changnyeong). We subsequently investigated the lead provenance of the opacifying agents in the glass beads through comparison with the current extent of the galena data accumulated for the East Asian region, including Korea, China, and Japan, and for Thailand(Kanchanaburi Province), Southeast Asia. Our analysis determined that the lead provenance of the glass beads excavated from the Korean peninsula was Thailand(Kanchanaburi Province). Beyond our results, further studies should seek to determine the production sites of the glass beads. Obtaining and comparing the scientific analyses of glass beads from India and Southeast Asia would enable research on the glass beads trade through the maritime silk road.

  • This study examined the effects of hold-relax with agonist contraction (HR-AC) on the symptoms of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) induced by intensive eccentric exercise of the non-dominant biceps brachii. Ten men (mean age=26.7 yrs, mean height=172.1 cm, mean weight=66.2 kg) and ten women (mean age=27.4 yrs, mean height=165.9 cm, mean weight=60.7 kg) who had not participated in a regular exercise program for the upper extremities in the previous six months were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups: the HR-AC group, or the control group. We measured joint range of motion (ROM), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), and muscle soreness before eccentric exercise, and 24, 48, and 72 hours after eccentric exercise. The subjects in the HR-AC group received the HR-AC technique in the non-dominant biceps brachii. The HR-AC technique was applied 24 and 48 hours after eccentric exercise. There was no significant difference between the HR-AC and the control group. However, the HR-AC group, compared to the control group, had a significant difference between the time points of the various parameters. Increased ROM (p<.05), decreased muscle soreness (p<.05), and reduced MVIC (p<.05) were found in the HR-AC group after 72 hours. Decreased ROM (p<.05) and MVIC (p<.05), and increased muscle soreness (p<.05) were observed in the control group. These findings suggest that the HR-AC technique effectively reduces muscle soreness and increases ROM 72 hours after eccentric exercise.

  • To investigate heavy metals (Hg, Pb and Cd) and their potential health risks in commercial dried laver (Porphyra sp.), we collected 45 samples from the major production areas on the western and southern coasts of Korea (Hwaseong, Seocheon, Gunsan, Muan, Shinan, Jindo, Haenam, Wando, Jangheung, Goheung and Busan). The Hg, Pb and Cd concentrations were measured using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) or a mercury analyzer. The average Hg, Pb and Cd concentrations in the dried laver were $0.006{\pm}0.0017$, $0.196{\pm}0.0614$ and $0.894{\pm}0.4882$ mg/kg, respectively. Based on the 2007 Korean Public Nutrition Report, these levels are 0.02, 0.11 and 2.47% of the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) for Hg, Pb and Cd, respectively, established by the FAO/WHO. The hazard quotient (HQ) determined from the ratio of exposure and safe levels were less than 1.0. Therefore, the levels of overall exposure to Hg, Pb and Cd for dried laver were below the recommended JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) levels, which indicate safe levels for public health.

  • Laboratory and in-situ tests were conducted to evaluate the cone factors for the layers with low plasticity containing a lot of silty and sand soils from the west coast (Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan areas) and its applicability was evaluated based on these results. The cone factors were evaluated from 19 to 23 based on unconfined compression strengths (qu), from 13 to 13.8 based on simple CU strengths and from 11.6 to 13.1 based on field vane strengths, respectively. The unconfined compression strengths of undisturbed silty soil samples with low plasticity were considerably underestimated due to the change of in-situ residual effective stress during sampling. Half of unconfined compression strength (qu/2) based cone factors of silty soils with low plasticity fluctuated and were approximately 1.8 times higher than simple CU based values of these soils. When evaluating cone factors of these soils, it should be judged overall on the physical properties such as the grain size distribution and soil plasticity and on the fluctuation of the corrected cone resistance and the sleeve friction due to the distribution of sandseam in the ground including pore pressure parameter.

  • Integral fire shutters are installed indiscriminately, regardless of evacuation. There is always the risk of an accident because integral shutters are applied mainly to corridors, passages, and stairs of schools This study evaluated the problem of integral shutter's entrance, evacuation, construction management, and maintenance control through a fire shutter accident case, including present condition of fire shutter installed at school of Okgil, Bucheon and Dongtan, Hwaseong. The results suggest that emergency lighting or signs for passage be set up to check location of entrance easily and install obstruction sensors at fire shutter to reduce life damage. In addition, the number of efficiency tests of fire shutters should be increased by running a trial test monthly or weekly to maintain the performance of fire shutter. Schools need to install a fire shutter- applied sprinkler at the entire floor.

  • The purpose of this study are to analyze the realities and characteristics of the inflow manufacturing factories located in non-urbanized area in the Capital region, and to extract the problems from locational point of view during the last 10 years. Using the raw data of factory registration statistics from 2006 to 2015, this study has intended to show the distributional characteristics of the independently-located manufacturing factories by various mapping methods. As a result, about 90% of the factories are heavily concentrated into 10 adjacent regions to Seoul and large cities. This study carried out questionaire surveys and in-depth interview to the leaders of Janganmyeon, Hwaseong-shi which have experienced the rapid increase of manufacturing factories. The independently-located factories have caused environmental pollution, destroyed rural village landscape, and affected the negative impact of the neighborhood community. The results of this study provide some implications to establish a desirable industrial location policy of non-urban areas in Capital region.

  • Recently, bicycle sharing system is introduced and the usage of shared bicycles is increasing in Suwon city. Despite the need to expand the bicycle road infrastructure, this is not the case. Therefore, this research attempts to propose a method for bicycle lane installation in Suwon city. For this, this research conducted location analysis based on the shared bicycle usage data and trip inducing facility data. Using location analysis results, appropriate routes for bicycle lanes are selected. As a result, two routes are selected. These routes have advantages that it is easy to connect with the existing bicycle roads or traffic inducing facilities and to install using the existing bicycle roads. However, these routes also have disadvantage that traffic congestion may occur due to the occupancy of the existing road space. It is expected that this research may contribute to expansion and maintenance of bicycle lane infrastructure, the bicycle and PM sharing service usage, implementation of sustainable urban transportation systems in Suwon city.

  • The Middle Jurassic granite dike swarm intruding into the Paleoproterozoic banded gneiss is pervasively observed in Ueumdo, Hwaseong City, mid-western Gyeonggi Massif. Based on their cross-cutting relationships in a representative outcrop, there are four dikes (UE-A, UE-C, UE-D, UE-E), and depending on the direction, there are three granite dike groups, which are NW- (UE-A dike), NW to WNW- (UE-C dike), and NE-trending (UE-D and UE-E dikes). These granite dikes are massive, medium-to coarse-grained biotite granites, and their relative ages observed in outcrops are in the order of UE-A, UE-D (=UE-E), and UE-C. The geometric analysis of the dikes indicates that the UE-A and UE-C dikes intrude under approximately NE-SW trending horizontal minimum stress fields. The UE-A dike, which showed a relatively low average SiO2 content by major element analysis, is a product of early magma differentiation compared to other dikes; therefore, it is consistent with the relative age of each dike. The 206Pb/238U weighted mean ages for each dike obtained from SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating were calculated to be 167 Ma (UE-A), 164 Ma (UE-C), 167 Ma (UE-D), and 167 Ma (UE-E), respectively. The samples of the UE-A, UE-D, and UE-E dikes showed very similar ages. The UE-C dike shows the youngest age, which is consistent with the results of the relative age in the outcrops and major element analysis. Therefore, the granite dikes intruded into the Middle Jurassic (approximately 167 and 164 Ma), coinciding with those of the Gyeonggi Massif, where the Middle Jurassic plutons are geographically widely distributed. This result indicates that the wide occurrence of the Middle Jurassic plutons on the Gyeonggi Massif was formed as a result of igneous activity moving in the northwest direction with the shallower subduction angle of the subducting oceanic plate during the Jurassic.

  • This study investigated the repair of UVB-induced cell damage by magnolol. We performed a drug-repurposing screen, and, in the STAT3 reporter gene assay, magnolol was identified as a suppressor of STAT3 that improves the cell viability of HDF cells. HDF cells treated with IL-6, UVB, and IFNγ showed the highest expression of Jak2 and phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3), and magnolol was able to decrease the expression of Jak2 and p-STAT3 in UVB-induced cells. Moreover, UVB-damaged cell growth increased significantly in correlation with both reactivation and with magnolol in a dose-dependent manner. Compared with AG490 (a Jak2 inhibitor) treatment of UVB-treated HDF cells, cell proliferation increased significantly. We confirmed that AG490 and magnolol reduced TNF-α concentrations, and Western blotting (protein level) showed decreases in Jak2 and p-STAT3 expression in only the magnolol-treated cells. The expression of Jak2, p-STAT3, and SOCS3 also increased only after treatment with magnolol. Cells were treated with magnolol and ML385 (an NRF2 inhibitor), and these secondary metabolites reduced cell proliferation and NRF2 expression. The amount of MMP9 was also increased by cotreatment with magnolol and ML385. Collectively, these results demonstrate the potential of magnolol for repairing cells after UVB-induced damage by regulating the expression of NRF2, SOCS3, Jak2, and STAT3.
