  • This study aims to investigate the motivation for science learning of 3rd year high school students who choose different majors from their track. A total of 2,012 high school 3rd year students participated in this study. We used Science Motivation Questionnaire II (Glynn et al., 2011) to measure the students' science motivation and performed Rasch analysis, MANOVA and logistic regression analysis. First, results showed that 11.5% of students in the science track switched their pathway to a non-STEM major and 14.3% of students in the humanities track switched to a STEM major. In addition, there were gender differences in switching majors. Second, we found a significant difference in science motivation between two groups of students switching their major only in career motivation. Third, science motivation was the significant predictor of STEM major choice; in particular, career motivation was the most influential variable. Based on these results, we proposed that prediction of and paying close attention to students' career motivation are required before making decisions on which track to take.

  • According to Symantec's Internet Security Threat Report(2018), Internet security threats such as Cryptojackings, Ransomwares, and Mobile malwares are rapidly increasing and diversifying. It means that detection of malwares requires not only the detection accuracy but also versatility. In the past, malware detection technology focused on qualitative performance due to the problems such as encryption and obfuscation. However, nowadays, considering the diversity of malware, versatility is required in detecting various malwares. Additionally the optimization is required in terms of computing power for detecting malware. In this paper, we present Stream Order(SO)-CNN and Incremental Coordinate(IC)-CNN, which are malware detection schemes using CNN(Convolutional Neural Network) that effectively detect intelligent and diversified malwares. The proposed methods visualize each malware binary file onto a fixed sized image. The visualized malware binaries are learned through GoogLeNet to form a deep learning model. Our model detects and classifies malwares. The proposed method reveals better performance than the conventional method.

  • This study analyzes the results of a survey based on classes conducted in the field to understand the educational needs of learners, and reflects the elements necessary for SW education. In this study, various experimental elements according to learning motivation and learning achievement were constructed and designed through previous studies. As a survey applied to this study, experimental elements in three categories: Faculty Competences(FC), Learner Competences(LC), and Educational Conditions(EC) were analyzed by primary area and secondary major, respectively. As a result of analyzing CT-based SW education by area, the development of educational materials, understanding of lectures, and teaching methods showed high satisfaction, while communication with students, difficulty of lectures, and the number of students were relatively low. The results of the analysis by major were found to be more difficult and less interesting in the humanities than in the engineering field. In this study, Based on these statistical results proposes the need for non-major SW education to improve into an interesting curriculum for effective liberal arts education in the future in terms of enhancing learners' problem-solving skills.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out if the analogical role-playing class activity had an effect on the students' academic achievements on cellular respirations as well as their science learning motivation for those who took part in the cellular respiration. To examine the effects of applying the activity, the research was conducted targeting a high school with humanities and social sciences courses, located in Busan. The target was specified as two classes that had selected a Biology II class, with one class (27 students) set as the test group and the other class (28 students) set as the control group. The conclusion drawn from this research was as follows: First, it seemed that the analogical role-playing activity helped the students to take their own parts in cellular respiration and gave them an opportunity to explain the concepts through direct physical activities, enhancing their academic achievements. Second, it was concluded that as the students found confidence and relevance in scientific knowledge as well as obtained a sense of accomplishment, the analogical role-playing class activity increased their level of satisfaction and their science learning motives. Third, as a result of the interviews on the change of the concept, students expressed some dissatisfaction over the new concept, and thought of the analogical role-playing activity as an intelligible alternative. It appeared that the alternative was plausible and fruitful.
