In this paper, we describe an algorithm which can automatically recognize human gesture for Human-Robot interaction. In early works, many systems for recognizing human gestures work under many restricted conditions. To eliminate these restrictions, we have proposed the method that can represent 3D and 2D gesture information simultaneously, APM. This method is less sensitive to noise or appearance characteristic. First, the feature vectors are extracted using APM. The next step is constructing a gesture space by analyzing the statistical information of training images with PCA. And then, input images are compared to the model and individually symbolized to one portion of the model space. In the last step, the symbolized images are recognized with HMM as one of model gestures. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm is efficient on gesture recognition, and it is very convenient to apply to humanoid robot or intelligent interface systems.

Mobile manipulators are getting lime light in the field of home automation due to their mobility and manipulation capabilities. In this paper, we developed a small size manipulator system that can be mounted on a mobile robot as a preliminary study to develop a mobile manipulator. The developed manipulator has four degree-of-freedom. At the end-effector of manipulator, there are a camera and a gripper to recognize and manipulate the object. One of four degree-of-freedom is linear motion in vertical direction for better interaction with human hands which are located higher than the mobile manipulator. The developed manipulator was designed to dispose the four actuators close to the base of the manipulator to reduce rotational inertia of the manipulator, which improves stability of manipulation and reduces the risk of rollover. The developed manipulator repeatedly performed a pick and place task and successfully manipulate the object within the workspace of manipulator.

As the 3D modeling technology and conversational algorithm is developed, digital humans are being used in various fields, and also virtual bankers have begun to appear in banks, including major banks such as Shin-Han Bank and Nong-Hyup Bank. However, most of the research of digital human mainly focus on its appearance, and research on robot persona that should be considered in anthropomorphizing a robot is insufficient. In this study, an experiment was conducted to find out the user experience of three scenarios (student ID receipt, deposit and withdrawal account opening, leasehold loan consultation) in which the level of anthropomorphism of the speech strategy and the level of personal information use differed in the specific context of banking. As a result of the study, social presence and usefulness had an interactive effect on the scenario and the level of anthropomorphism. There was no interaction effect on intimacy, trustworthiness, and perceived intelligence, but a tendency could be confirmed.

Human and robot will have closer relation in the future, and we can expect that the interaction between human and robot will be more intense. To take the advantage of people's innate ability of communication, researchers concentrated on the facial expression so far. But for the robot to express emotional intensity, other modalities such as gesture, movement, sound, color are also needed. This paper suggests that the intensity of emotion can be expressed with color and blinking so that it is possible to apply the result to LED. Color and emotion definitely have relation, however, the previous results are difficult to implement due to the lack of quantitative data. In this paper, we determined color and blinking period to express the 6 basic emotions (anger, sadness, disgust, surprise, happiness, fear). It is implemented on avatar and the intensities of emotions are evaluated through survey. We figured out that the color and blinking helped to express the intensity of emotion for sadness, disgust, anger. For fear, happiness, surprise, the color and blinking didn't play an important role; however, we may improve them by adjusting the color or blinking.

As home network system begins serving in earnest, the recent fruits of research in home service robot show that the new epoch that human and intelligent robots are living, communicating and interacting together at home, may come true in the near future. In the other hand, it is generally known that the multiagent system, performing distributed process together with other different devices in a home network system, is better than single robot or single home server for adapting themselves to home environment and completing their mission because the characteristic of home environment is 'open'. Therefore, in this paper we suggest the framework model to define agents, which is needed lot the home with a home network system, and the communication protocol architecture between agents. For this, we focus our attention on an agent comprising the set of many agent instances rather than the single intelligent or ability of a robot or home server, and also suggest the way of adaptation for agent systems to their environments and interaction with human in the manner of cooperation and negotiation among agents or agent instances in each agent.

Human has various types of emotions which affect speculation, judgement, activity, and the like at the moment. Specifically, walking is also affected by emotions, because one's emotion status can be easily inferred by his or her walking style. The present research on biped walking with humanoid robots is mainly focused on stable walking irrespective of ground condition. For effective human-robot interaction, however, walking pattern needs to be changed depending on the emotion status of the robot. This paper provides analysis and comparison of gait experiment data for the men and women in four representative emotion states, i.e., joy, sorrow, ease, and anger, which was acquired by a gait analysis system. The data and analysis results provided in this paper will be referenced to emotional biped walking of a humanoid robot.

In this paper, we propose a humanoid active audition system which detects the direction of sound and performs speech recognition using just three microphones. Compared with previous researches, this system comprises simpler algorithm and better amplifier system having advantages to increase a detectible distance of sound signal in spite of simple circuit. In order to verify our system's performance, we install the proposed active audition system to the home service robot, called Hombot II, which has been developed at the KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology), thus we confirm excellent performance by experimental results

This paper proposes a wireless EMG-based human-computer interface (HCI) for persons with disabilities. For the HCI, four interaction commands are defined by combining three elevation motions of shoulders such as left, right and both elevations. The motions are recognized by comparing EMG signals on the Levator scapulae muscles with double thresholds. A real-time EMG processing hardware is implemented for acquiring EMG signals and recognizing the motions. To achieve real-time processing, filters such as high- and low-pass filter and band-pass and -rejection filter, and a full rectifier and a mean absolute value circuit are embedded on a board with a high speed microprocessor. The recognized results are transferred to a wireless client system such as a mobile robot via a Bluetooth module. From experimental results using the implemented real-time EMG processing hardware, the proposed wireless EMG-based HCI is feasible for the disabled.
