  • The objective of this study is to investigate hwnan operator's perceptual and psychophysical responses to vibrotactile stimulation on various parts of the hand. Using a small vibrotactile display, five different loci of the hand along with two other mechanical parameters consisting vibrotactile stimulations, which are vibration frequency and number of active contactors, were examined for the effects on absolute thresholds. All test variables were found to have significant effects on thresholds. It was observed that absolute threshold is a function of vibration frequency and number of active contactors. Tactile sensitivity was the greatest at the vibration frequency of 240 Hz, and the fingertip was found to be the most sensitive locus on the hand. The area of stimulation on the hand was also found to be significant in that the sensitivity increased with the number of active contactors. The results of the study generally supported those of other previous studies. It should also be noted, however, that the conclusions from the study should be limited to the absolute sensitivity, not to the suprathreshold intensities of normal everyday contact with the hands.

  • In this paper, we proposed an electromyography(EMG) based control method of a virtual robot arm as an adaptive human supporting system or remote control system, which consists of an shoulder control part, elbow control part, and wrist control part. The system uses four surface electrodes to acquire the EMG signal from operator. It is shown from the experiments that the EMG patterns during arm motions can be classified sufficiently by using SOM and LVQ. The interface system based on PC environment is constructed to 3-D graphic user interface(GUI) program. Experimental results show that proposed method obtains approximately 94 percent of success in classification.

  • Fuzzy control has been researched for application of industrial processes which have no accurate mathematical model and could not controlled by conventional methods because of a lack of quantitative input-output data. Intelligent control approach based on fuzzy logic could directly reflex human thinking and natural language to controller comparing with conventional methods. In this paper, fuzzy controller is implemented to acquire operator's knowledge. The tested system is constructed for sending a ball to the goal position using wind from two DC motors in the path. This system contains non-linearity and uncertainty because of the characteristic of aerodynamics inside the path. Ball position is measured by a vision camera. The system used in this experiment could be hardly modeled by mathematic methods and could not be easily controlled by linear control manners. The controller, in this paper is designed based on the input-output data and experimental knowledge obtained by trials.

  • The main control room (MCR) of a nuclear power plant plays an important role in the operation of the plant. Since the traditional man-machine interface of the current MCR is old-fashioned, a next-generation MCR, that provides a VDT-based human-computer interface is being designed. This paper aims to provide a systematic and efficient method for converting a traditional man-machine interface of the MCR into a VDT-based one. Procedures and analysis methods are presented for efficient and effective development.

  • A model free controller utilizing a set of linguistic fuzzy logic of the human operator's experience is developed to control the steam generator water level in a pressurized water reactor. Only 9 rules for control action are generated from the inputs of water level error and mass flow error implicitly representing the time variation of the collapsed water level. The bell type membership functions of the premise side and the result side are tuned by the sensitivity study. This compact fuzzy logic controller shows a robust control during transient and no offset error and oscillation during steady state operation. For a multi-ramp power increase from start-up to full power, the proposed controller shows good performance for the entire range.

  • A novel framework for quantitative estimates of the benefits of signals on nuclear power plant availability and economics has been developed in this work. The models developed in this work quantify how the perfect signals affect the human operator's success in restoring the power plant to the desired state when it enters undesirable transients. Also, the models quantify the economic benefits of these perfect signals. The models have been applied to the condensate feedwater system of the nuclear power plant for demonstration.

  • The roller machines installed in the industrial field are operated under hazardous conditions due to no safety devices available, human error during operation, defective safety devices, and inadequate regulation even in case that safety devices are provided. Up to now, most roller machines installed in domestic field are provides with band breaking system as a safety device. In this study, the emergency stop distance is measured within the limit of domestic regulation but violates a foreign regulation(EN1417). Consequently, it is concluded that the roller machines with a band breaking system have high possibility of death or serious injury of the operator and the system should be improved with the introduction of additional safety devices. This thesis suggests the safety measures suitable for the roller machines with different drive systems based on the experiment results. The use of the newly developed safety system has been tested on many cases.

  • For the remote operation of the mobile robot, the human operator depends fully on the sensory information which is the partial information of the workspace of the mobile robot. It is usually very hard to fully manually operate the mobile robot in this situation. We propose the efficient guidance navigation method for improving the efficiency of the remote operation with the expanded guide circle using the sensory information. The guidance command is generated from the proposed algorithm using the expanded guide circle. We evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithm using the experiments.

  • As modern power systems become large and complicated, the automated voltage and reactive power control system is required in most developed countries due to the recent amazing progress of computer net works and information thechnology. So far the voltage control has been depend on human operator in korean power system. This paper presents an intelligent voltage control system based on sensitivity analysis and artificial intelligence technology. Detailed state space modeling technique is discussed and a new performance index is proposed to speed up the searching performance of the expert system. As the searching strategy is very important factor of the speed of expert system the least first search algorithm is applied using this performance index. The intelligent voltage control system is applied to the Jeju power system. As a result, case studies showed a promissing application of the intelligent voltage control system.

  • The multi-tasking feature of digital I&C equipment could increase risk concentration because the I&C equipment affects the actuation of the safety functions in several ways. Anticipated Transient without Scram (ATWS) is a typical case of safety function failure in nuclear power plants. In a conventional analysis, mechanical failures are treated as the main contributors of the ATWS. This paper quantitatively presents the probability of the ATWS based on a fault tree analysis of a Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant is also presented. An analysis of the digital equipment in the digital plant protection system. The results show that the digital system severely affects the ATWS frequency. We also present the results of a sensitivity study, which show the effects of the important factors, and discuss the dependency between human operator failure and digital equipment failure.
