The Role of Training and Absorptive Capacity in Mediating Human Capital Dimensions and Organizational Performance: Evidence from Pakistan

  • This study aims to examine the role of training and absorptive capacity as a mediator to examine the impact of human capital dimensions on the performance of an organization. This study employs the quantitative approach for analysis. A sample of 208 respondents was collected from the textile factories based in Karachi and Faisalabad. Data was analyzed using the PLS-SEM technique. PLS-SEM algorithm was used to check the validity and reliability of the data. PLS-SEM bootstrapping was used for studying the impact. The results show that the skills have an insignificant impact on organizational performance. Education and skills have an insignificant indirect impact on the performance of an organization. The research findings show that the human capital dimensions are full and partially mediated via absorptive capacity and training. The findings revealed that if we implement one by one dimension of human capital then it will not cause any increase in the organization's performance but if we implement all dimensions then it results in optimal performance. Thus, this study suggests adopting effective training techniques and creating absorptive capacity in an organization to increase the performance of an organization. The findings of this study significantly contribute to the existing body of knowledge.

Emily Dickinson's Ecovision: the Interrelatedness of Nature and Human Beings

  • Whereas many Dickinson scholars tend to focus on Emily Dickinson's anthropocentric dimension, her work also reveals an ecocentric aspect. On the one hand, influenced by New England Puritan typology and its offshoot Emersonian Transcendentalist idealism, Dickinson reveals her indebtedness to these two worldviews by emphasizing the invisible over the visible and the spiritual over the physical. At times, she reflects the common thread of the two outlooks-a hierarchical thinking, in which nature is inferior to human beings and does not have its own identity outside of human use. On the other hand, seeing through the downside of the hierarchical Emersonian idealism, Dickinson sometimes suggests an alternative stance on nature in a nonhierarchical way. She often appreciates nature for its own sake, becoming its neighbor and companion. This aligns Dickinson with modern ecocritics and ecofeminists who criticize a hierarchical anthropocentrism and promote an egalitarian ecocentrism in which natural and human beings are fellow citizens of the earth community. And yet, unlike most ecocritics who advocate a complete shift to an egalitarian paradigm, Dickinson embraces both anthropocentrism and ecocentrism in her poetry of "open portfolio." This openness stems from her belief in interrelatedness between God, nature, and human beings. Housing the two opposing perspectives in her poetry, she widely opens the possibility to choose the better way to relate to our sister and brother, nature.

  • 본 연구는 성남시 청년배당 지급조례를 기본소득 실현 사례로 설정하여 그 도입에 있어서 문화복지위원회 회의록을 규범과 경험의 정책기준으로 분석한 결과다. 주요 문장을 질적 코딩하여 재분류하는 분석방법을 응용하였다. 규범적 차원에서 찬성논의는 사회정의를 실현하는 목적으로 청년배당을 이해한다. 또한 원리적으로 기존정책을 대체할 수 있다고 본다. 반면 도덕적으로 정당하지 아니하며 정책의 비교 우위에 대한 모호성과 수단의 비효율성 등 원리적, 수단적 차원에서 반대 논의가 제기된다. 경험적 차원에서 찬성논의는 사회적 배려대책으로 이해하며 기존 대책의 기능부전에 따른 혁신적 정책 도입에 초점을 두고 있다. 반면 반대논의는 목표 효율성과 급여 내용에 대한 문제를 들고 있다. 양측이 너무 대조적이므로 합의는 어려우며 정치적 진영 논리가 중요 변수가 될 수 있다. 기본소득은 인간의 자기실현에 대한 새로운 사고실험이므로 생산주의 복지정책과는 다른 정책과학이다. 즉 총체적 생활지원을 요구하는 돌봄의 사회정책을 제한 조건으로 하는 실질적 자유를 위한 물질적 지원을 고려하는 비경험적 정책이다. 기존의 정책 과학적 평가 이전에 자율적인 삶의 실현을 지향하는 그 자체의 철학적 의미에 대한 이해와 복지 정치와 운동을 통한 정체성 알리기는 여전히 중요한 전략이 될 것이다.

정신장애인의 인권보장과 제한에 관한 연구 (The Assurance and Restriction on Human Rights of the Mentally Ill)

  • 본 연구는 장애의 특성상 인권보장이 '다수의 안전'이나 '치료적 이득'과 갈등이 있을 수밖에 없는 정신장애인의 인권 보장과 제한을 일반적으로 어떻게 이해하는지를 알아보고자 하는 것이다. 따라서 일반인 10명, 전문가 9명, 정신장애인 6명을 대상으로 각 권리(존엄성 존중, 차별대우 받지 않을 권리, 자발적 입원보장, 자유로운 환경보장)별로 문제영역(장기입원, 운전면허취득제한, 강제입원, 통신의 자유제한)을 구체화하여 면담하였다. 면담내용을 질적 분석한 결과 조사대상자들이 권리보장과 제한을 이해하는 두 가지 차원을 발견하였다. 첫 번째 차원은 권리보장과 제한을 다수에 미치는 긍정적 결과를 중심으로 정당화하느냐 아니면 인권존중의 보편적 원리를 내세워 권리중심으로 정당화하느냐 하는 것이다. 두 번째 차원은 권리보장과 제한의 판단주체를 공식적 체계에 두느냐 아니면 비공식적 체계에 두느냐 하는 것이다.

Safety Culture, A New Challenge to Human Factors Engineering for 21st Century

  • Objective: This paper discusses the recent challenges to human factors engineering due to the safety culture. Background: As incidents occurring in specific fields such as logistics, plant, energy and medical sectors in Korea, as well as in the public sectors including railway, road, aviation and shipping, are recently raised as social issues from the disaster dimension, those incidents are dealt with as man-made disasters in many cases. The trend regarding all accidents as man-made disasters has been expanded in the active perspective that the controllability of all incidents should be ensured in technology development, due to change from a fatal point of view regarding disasters as random occurrence of uncertainties in the past. Method: Man-made disasters are concluded as human errors, and safety culture stands out as a cause of human errors or a new cause item recently. Because safety culture, however, is a very comprehensive term, of which true nature is obscure, although many definitions of safety culture have been presented, the safety culture may make avoid the true nature and responsibility of an incident, or make the main player and subject obscure. Raising safety culture as a cause without presenting a specific countermeasure will be just a wisdom of hindsight. Results and Conclusion: This study reviews the fundamental discussions on "Is safety culture a task of human factors engineering?" and the existing approach carried out from various perspectives in order to seek an effective approach on the new task of safety culture in the human factors engineering field. This study discusses an engineering approach to meet a precondition that safety culture is not just an added factor through a review of the approaches in the proactive fields such as nuclear power and aviation, and the traditional approaches of human factors engineering. Application: This study especially defines the perspective of socio-technological system that has expanded the existing man-machine system, and discusses a systemic approach embracing various interactions, and several overriding tasks.

사무실 의자의 인간공학적 디자인 (Ergonomic Design of Office Chair)

  • 국내의 의자 개발은 선진외국의 인체치수 및 설계기준에 의한 디자인으로 인해 많은 사용자가 작업 수행도는 물론, 허리, 목, 어깨 통증에 대한 호소가 늘고 있는 실정이다. 다양한 체격의 사용자가 무리없는 자세로 사무작업을 수행하기 위해선 사무용의자의 각종치수에 대한 인간공학적 설계기준이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 한국인 성인 인체측정자료를 바탕으로 선 연구의 설계지침을 이용하여 설계권장치수를 제시하였다. 이에 대한 타당성 검증을 위해 피실험자들을 측정하여, 선호치수를 구하였고, 그것과 설계지침에 따른 차이를 분석하였다. 그리고 일반적으로 많이 사용하는 사무용의자들과 자신의 신체에 맞게 조절가능한 의자를 사용하여, 안락감과 신체불편도를 평가하였으며, 각 설계치수가 인체에 미치는 영향을 비교 분석하였다. 좌면의 높이가 높으면 허벅지에 영향을 미치고, 등받침대 폭, 높이, 각도는 어깨, 목, 허리에 피로를 가져다준다.본 연구실험결과 한국인을위한 사무용의자의 좌면 높이 권장치수는 고정식일때 425mm, 조절식일때 365-484mm를 추천한다. 그 외 설계권장치수는 논문에 제시하였으며, 이와 같은 인간공학적 설계권장치수는 결론적으로 사용자의 신체에 맞게 조절범위를 제공하므로 설계분야에 중요한 기초자료가 되리라 본다.

노출 시간과 영상 해상도가 프랙탈 차원값에 미치는 영향 (Effect of exposure time and image resolution on fractal dimension)

  • Purpose : To evaluate the effect of exposure time and image resolution on fractal dimension calculations for determining the optimal range of these two variances. Materials and Methods : Thirty-one radiographs of the mandibular angle area of sixteen human dry mandibles were taken at different exposure times (0.01, 0.08, 0.16, 0.25, 0.40, 0.64, and 0.80 s). Each radiograph was digitized at 1200 dpi, 8 bit, 256 gray level using a film scanner. We selected an Region of Interest (ROI) that corresponded to the same region as in each radiograph, but the resolution of ROI was degraded to 1000, 800, 600, 500, 400, 300, 200, and 100 dpi. The fractal dimension was calculated by using the tile-counting method for each image, and the calculated values were then compared statistically. Results: As the exposure time and the image resolution increased, the mean value of the fractal dimension decreased, except the case where exposure time was set at 0.01 seconds (α = 0.05). The exposure time and image resolution affected the fractal dimension by interaction (p<0.001). When the exposure time was set to either 0.64 seconds or 0.80 seconds, the resulting fractal dimensions were lower, irrespective of image resolution, than at shorter exposure times (α = 0.05). The optimal range for exposure time and resolution was determined to be 0.08- 0.40 seconds and from 400-1000 dpi, respectively. Conclusion : Adequate exposure time and image resolution is essential for acquiring the fractal dimension using tile-counting method for evaluation of the mandible.

  • Based on a combination of theories, experiences and cases a sustainable change strategy and self-assessment method with a focus on the human dimension in TQM are suggested and discussed. The Post Denmark TIQ (Total Involvement in Quality) case will be used to illustrate how breakthrough in people attitudes and organisational culture happened and became the foundation for a new culture focusing on change, continuous improvements and everybody's participation.

  • Engineered nanoparticles are materials purposefully produced with at least one dimension between 1 and 100 nanometers. Nanotechnology has the potential to dramatically improve the effectiveness of a number of existing consumer and industrial products and could have a substantial impact on the development of new products in all sectors. However, nanoparticles is little known about what effect these properties may have on human health. This materials provide an overview of what is known about the potential hazards of engineered nanoparticles and measures that can be taken to minimize workplace exposures.
