Several metrics have been reported in the literature to assess stereo image quality, mostly based on visual attention or human visual sensitivity based distortion prediction with the help of disparity information, which do not consider the combined aspects of human visual processing. In this paper, visual attention and depth assisted stereo image quality assessment model (VAD-SIQAM) is devised that consists of three main components, i.e., stereo attention predictor (SAP), depth variation (DV), and stereo distortion predictor (SDP). Visual attention is modeled based on entropy and inverse contrast to detect regions or objects of interest/attention. Depth variation is fused into the attention probability to account for the amount of changed depth in distorted stereo images. Finally, the stereo distortion predictor is designed by integrating distortion probability, which is based on low-level human visual system (HVS), responses into actual attention probabilities. The results show that regions of attention are detected among the visually significant distortions in the stereo image pair. Drawbacks of human visual sensitivity based picture quality metrics are alleviated by integrating visual attention and depth information. We also show that positive correlation with ground-truth attention and depth maps are increased by up to 0.949 and 0.936 in terms of the Pearson and the Spearman correlation coefficients, respectively.
In this paper, we propose the digital video frame obfuscation method for intellectual property protection using the DC component of the intra frame and the motion vector of the inter frame at digital video encoding. The proposed method considers characteristics of the HVS (human visual system) which is sensitive at the low frequency and the middle frequency. This method makes the signal distorted as operating XOR between authentication signal and the DC coefficient of the intra frame including main information and the sign of the motion vector including edge motion, so that the video is normally displayed only when suitable authentication signal is applied.
The rapid growth of multimedia network systems has caused overflowing illegal copies of digital contents. Among digital contents, watermarking technique can be used to protect ownership about the image. Copyright protection involves the authentication of image ownership and the identification of illegal copies of image. In this paper, a new digital watermarking technique using HVS and adaptive scale factor based on the wavelet transform is proposed to use the binary image watermark. The original image is decomposed by 3-level wavelet transform. It is embedded to baseband and high frequency band. The embedding in the baseband is considered robustness, the embedding in the high frequency band is concerned about HVS and invisibility. The watermarking of a visually recognizable binary image used the HVS and random permutation to protect the copyright. From the experimental results, we confirm that the proposed technique is strong to various attacks such as joint photographic experts ground(JPEG) compression, cropping, collusion, and inversion of lines.

To assess image quality accurately, an image quality assessment (IQA) metric is required to reflect the human visual system (HVS) properly. In other words, the structure, color, and contrast ratio of the image should be evaluated in consideration of various factors. In addition, as mobile embedded devices such as smartphone become popular, a fast computing speed is important. In this paper, the proposed IQA metric combines color similarity, gradient similarity, and phase similarity synergistically to satisfy the HVS and is designed by using optimized pooling and quantization for fast computation. The proposed IQA metric is compared against existing 13 methods using 4 kinds of evaluation methods. The experimental results show that the proposed IQA metric ranks the first on 3 evaluation methods and the first on the remaining method, next to VSI which is the most remarkable IQA metric. Its computing speed is on average about 20% faster than VSI's. In addition, we find that the proposed IQA metric has a bigger amount of correlation with the HVS than existing IQA metrics.
In this paper, we proposed a robust watermarking algorithm based on fuzzy inference and human visual system. In the first, discrete wavelet transform(DWT) is involved to calculate additive energy strength, then we devised fuzzy inference, which was established by computing contrast and texture degree in gray-level image. Watermark is embeded into the coefficients of 3-level DWT so as to consider a spatial effects. Visual recognizable patterns such as binary image were used as a watermark Consequently, experimental results showed that proposed algorithm is robust in JPEC compression.

We propose an adaptive digital watermarking algorithm using HVS(human visual system) and SOM(Self-Organizing Map) among neural networks. This method adjusts adaptively the strength of the watermark which is embedded in different blocks according to block classification in DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) domain. All blocks in 3 classes out of 4 are selected to embed a watermark. Watermark sequences are embedded in 6 lowest frequency coefficients of each block except the DC component. The experimental results are excellent.
LED backlight for LCD TV is a great alternative to CCFL backlight due to its low power consumption and flexible arrangement. Various LED backlight configurations are being used to control the backlight locally in order to achieve both power efficiency and high contrast. However, the relatively small spatial resolution of the backlight system results in showing artifacts of backlight control that is acknowledgeable to human vision. Moreover, such artifacts get worse between temporal frames. In this paper we present a method of decreasing such temporal artifacts with a Human Visual System(HVS) approach to minimize distortion caused by local backlight dimming.

Automated Vision Inspection (AVI) systems automatically detect any defect feature in a surface image. The performance of the system can be measured under a special circumstances such as ultimate defect detection. In this situation, the defect signal level is similar to noise level and it becomes hard to make a solid decision with AVI systems. In this paper, we propose an effective preprocessing technique to enhance SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). The method is motivated by some principles of HVS (Human Visual System) and RLC (Run Length Coding) techniques is used for this purpose. The proposed preprocessing technique enhances SNR under ultimate defect conditions and improves overall performance of AVI system.
In this paper, we proposed a wavelet-based digital watermarking algorithm using human visual system and subband-adaptive threshold. After the original image is transformed using discrete wavelet transform(DWT), the perceptually significant coefficients of the each subband excluding the lowest level subbands are utilized to embed the watermark. To select perceptually significant coefficients, we use subband-adaptive threshold. For the selected coefficients, the watermark is embedded by rising HVS. We tested the performance of the proposed algorithm compared with conventional watermarking algorithm by computer simulation. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the conventional algorithm.

This paper proposes progressive image transmission(PIT) methods based on the wavelet packet transform, in which quantizers are optimized at each stage for the given bit rate. Scalar and vector quantizers are used and the performance of each quantizer is compared. After quantization, selected subbands are ordered by their priority for transmission. Subjective quality of the reconsetructed image is improved by human visual system (HVS) weighting.
