  • Purpose: Acellular human dermis is very useful implant for use in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, the volume of acellular human dermis graft is known to decrease for a long time. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is a polypeptide that enhances the collagen synthesis and angiogenesis. In the current study we examined whether bFGF could improve the survival of acellular human dermis ($SureDerm^{(R)}$) by increasing angiogenesis of the graft. Methods: Forty rats were divided into two groups (control and bFGF). A 2-mm thick piece of $SureDerm^{(R)}$ was cut into smaller pieces that were $15{\times}5$ mm in size. Two subcutaneous pockets were made on the back of each rat. Grafts sprayed with bFGF were implanted in the bFGF group and injected with bFGF after transplantation every 3 days for 2 weeks. In the control group, the grafts were treated with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) instead of bFGF. Four days, and 1, 4, and 12 weeks after the implantation, the grafts were harvested and gross and histologic examinations were performed. Inflammation grade, graft thickness, neocollagen density, and neocapillary count were measured. Results: The bFGF group displayed more rapid accumulation of inflammatory cells with a higher density of neocapillaries, and increased active collagen synthesis. After 12 weeks, the thickness of the grafts in the control and bFGF groups was $75.15{\pm}4.80%$ and $81.79{\pm}5.72%$, respectively, in comparison to the thickness before transplantation. There was a statistically significant difference between both groups ($p$ <0.05). Conclusion: bFGF was effective in reducing the absorption of acellular human dermal grafts by increasing angiogenesis and accelerating engraftment. In conclusion, bFGF may be a good tool for use in acellular human dermal graft transplantation for reconstructive surgery involving soft-tissue defects.

  • The effect of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on circulating insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) in the Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, was assessed after injected of recombinant human IGF-I (6 $\mu$g/100 g body weight). Growth and metabolic status of each fish were assessed by determing body length and body weight changes, and serum glucose concentration. Serum IGF binding proteins concentrations were assessed by the Western ligand blot procedure using $^{125}I$-labeled human IGF-I tracer. The fish received IGF-I were Heavier than the saline-injected control fish after 2 weeks of treatment. Plasma IGFBP-3 concentration inclosed, but plasma IGFBP-1 and glucose levels decreased significantly after administration. Taken together, the findings of this study suggest that human IGF-I is biologically active in Korean rockfish and may be of significance in metabolic and growth-related processes.

  • This study analyzed the body shape of the body of 17~19 years old female students using the SPSS 20.0 statistical program according to the 7th Korea Human Body Survey. Factor analysis was based on six factors including body size, body height, shoulder length, and width, upper body length, hip length, and shoulder inclination related factors. Through this cluster analysis, the body shape of late adolescent female student was classified into four types. Body type 1 was the highest body height factor, and the upper body length and the hip length factor were lower. It was analyzed as 'Long leg in the body'. Body type 2 is the 'narrow shoulder skinny type' with high hip and shoulder slope factors and low body size, body height, shoulder length, and width factor. Body type 3 showed body size, shoulder length, height and hip length factor, and body height factor was rather low 'low hip obese body shape'. Body type 4 was analyzed as 'lower shoulder long upper body type' with higher upper body length factor and lower body size and shoulder slope factor. It is thought that when the pattern is made, it is possible to produce excellent patterns by fitting the dimensions of the body, as well as the dimensions of the shoulder width, the slope, and the hip length.

  • Stimulatory effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth $factor-{\alpha}$($TGF-{\alpha}$) on the growth of squamous cancer cell lines established from human oral cancer tissue with moderate differentiation were studied in vitro. After culturing in serum-free media for 24 hours, growth factors-EGF only, $TGF-{\alpha}$ only and EGF, $TGF-{\alpha}$ together-were added to the media and numbers of cells were analyzed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and compared with the control at 96, 144 hours. Each of EGF and $TGF-{\alpha}$ showed statistically significant stimulatory effects on the growth of cells respectively. Dose-dependent relationship of the stimulatory effects were not clearly demonstrated. The effects of EGF were higher than those of $TGF-{\alpha}$ and combinative administration showed higher effects than those of single uses. In conclusion, EGF may play an important and major role in differentiation and growth of human oral squamous cancer cells. $TGF-{\alpha}$, produced from cells activated by EGF, also can stimulate the cell growth and could be an alternative ligand for EGF receptor.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the method to select optimal size for the industrial products which are closely related to human's body size. For this purpose, human factors such as body characteristics, body features, and preference in product selection which needs to be considered in setting standards were analyzed. This analysis is to select optimal size to minimize losses caused by the difference of size between demand by the customers and supply from the manufacturers. Using loss function, repetitive calculation process algorithm by using bisearch method was applied in selecting the sizes of demand and supply which minimize the total expected losses. For cumulative normal distribution probability, IMSL routine DNORDF was used. In case study, comparison has been made between the result which was calculated using presented algorithm and the results calculated by the process currently used by KS and ISO by measuring aged women's body size in human factors side and sorting them through the factor analysis and cluster analysis for feature factor extraction. Thus, they can be used as a basis for establishing industrial product standards.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a recombinant human epidermal growth factor (EGF)-based cream for the prevention of acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy (RT). Materials and Methods: Between December 2012 and April 2013, 40 breast cancer patients who received postoperative RT were prospectively enrolled in this study and randomly assigned to receive human recombinant EGF-based cream (intervention group) or general supportive skin care (control group). The grade of radiation dermatitis and pain score were examined at weekly intervals during RT and 6 weeks after RT completion. Results: All patients completed the planned RT and complied well with instructions for applying the study cream and general supportive skin care. In the intervention group, radiation dermatitis of maximum grade 3, 2, and 1 developed in 3 (15%), 11 (55%), and 6 patients (30%), respectively. In comparison, in the control group, radiation dermatitis of maximum grade 3, 2, and 1 developed in 8 (40%), 10 (50%), and 2 patients (10%), respectively. The intervention group showed lower incidence of grade 3 radiation dermatitis than the control group (p=0.068 in univariate analysis and p=0.035 in multivariate analysis). There was no statistically significant difference in the maximal pain score between the two groups (p=0.934). Conclusions: This single-blind randomized preliminary study showed that recombinant human EGF-based cream can have a beneficial role in preventing or minimizing radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients. To confirm the results of our study, additional studies with a large sample size are required.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the structural relationships between attributes, satisfaction, and behavioral intention of rural tourism activity. For this study, an onsite survey was conducted to tourists of 35 rural tourism farms. A total of 408 samples were collected for the analysis. The SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 18.0 statistical package were used for frequency, reliability, exploratory factor, confirmatory factor, and path analysis. Through exploratory factor analysis, four dimensions of rural tourism activity attribute were identified from 20 variables: 'human resource', 'activity', 'rural culture', and 'facility and environment'. The results of structural equation modelling indicate that 'human resource', 'activity', 'rural culture' had positive effect on behavioral intention. Through the results, agritourism farm operators will be able to develop effective marketing strategy and management skill.
