  • Cache-based side-channel attacks have achieved more attention along with the development of cloud computing technologies. However, current host-based mitigation methods either provide bad compatibility with current cloud infrastructure, or turn out too application-specific. Besides, they are defending blindly without any knowledge of on-going attacks. In this work, we present CacheSCDefender, a framework that provides a (Virtual Machine Monitor) VMM-based comprehensive defense framework against all levels of cache attacks. In designing CacheSCDefender, we make three key contributions: (1) an attack-aware framework combining our novel dynamic remapping and traditional cache cleansing, which provides a comprehensive defense against all three cases of cache attacks that we identify in this paper; (2) a new defense method called dynamic remapping which is a developed version of random permutation and is able to deal with two cases of cache attacks; (3) formalization and quantification of security improvement and performance overhead of our defense, which can be applicable to other defense methods. We show that CacheSCDefender is practical for deployment in normal virtualized environment, while providing favorable security guarantee for virtual machines.

  • Long-short pile composite foundations bear both vertical and horizontal loads in many engineering applications. This study used indoor model tests to determine the horizontal bearing mechanism of a composite foundation with long and short piles under horizontal loads. A custom experimental device was developed to prevent excessive eccentricity of the vertical loading device caused by the horizontal displacement. ABAQUS software was used to analyze the influence of the load size and cushion thickness on the horizontal bearing mechanism. The results reveal that a large vertical load leads to soil densification and increases the horizontal bearing capacity of the composite foundation. The magnitude of the horizontal displacement of the pile and the horizontal load borne by the pile are related to the piles' positions. Due to different pile lengths, the long piles exhibit long pile effects and experience bending deformation, whereas the short piles rotate around a point (0.2 L from the pile bottom) as the horizontal load increases. Selecting a larger cushion thickness significantly improves the horizontal load sharing capacity of the soil and reduces the horizontal displacement of the pile top.

  • Lung cancer is the most common causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and a lack of effective methods for early diagnosis has greatly impacted the prognosis and survival rates of the affected patients. Tumor-initiating cells (TICs) are considered to be largely responsible for tumor genesis, resistance to tumor therapy, metastasis, and recurrence. In addition to representing a good potential treatment target, TICs can provide clues for the early diagnosis of cancer. MicroRNA (miRNA) alterations are known to be involved in the initiation and progression of human cancer, and the detection of related miRNAs in TICs is an important strategy for lung cancer early diagnosis. As Hsa-miR-155 (miR-155) can be used as a diagnostic marker for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a smart molecular beacon of miR-155 was designed to image the expression of miR-155 in NSCLC cases. TICs expressing CD133 and CD338 were obtained from A549 cells by applying an immune magnetic bead isolation system, and miR-155 was detected using laser-scanning confocal microscopy. We found that intracellular miR-155 could be successfully detected using smart miR-155 molecular beacons. Expression was higher in TICs than in A549 cells, indicating that miR-155 may play an important role in regulating bio-behavior of TICs. As a non-invasive approach, molecular beacons could be implemented with molecular imaging to diagnose lung cancer at early stages.

  • In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical analyses were carried out to investigate the penetration performance of a dynamically installed Hall anchor. The advanced coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was adopted to accurately simulate the large soil deformation during the vertical penetration of a Hall anchor. In total, 52 numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between anchor penetration depth and the initial kinematic energy. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the effects of soil shear strength and soil type on the penetration mechanism of a drop anchor under self-weight. There is a monotonic increase in the penetration depth with an increasing anchor weight when the topsoil of the riverbed is not subjected to erosion. On the other hand, all the computed depths significantly increase when soil erosion is taken into consideration. This is mainly due to an enhanced initial kinematic energy from an increased dropping depth. Both depths increase exponentially with the initial kinematic energy. An enhanced shear strength can potentially increase the side resistance and end-bearing pressure around a drop anchor, thus significantly reducing the downward penetration of a hall anchor. Design charts are developed to directly estimate penetration depth and associated plastic zone due to dynamically installed anchor at arbitrary soil shear strength and anchor kinematic energy.

  • Isopropyl mercaptan is an important pharmaceutical intermediate and chemical material. And thiourea and triglycol are the main materials for the synthesis of isopropyl mercaptan. Therefore the dissolution of thiourea in triglycol solution is very important for the production of isopropyl mercaptan. The aims of this study are to examine the dissolution kinetics of thiourea in triglycol solution, and to present an alternative process for producing isopropyl mercaptan. In order to investigate the dissolution kinetics of thiourea in triglycol solution, the concentrations of solution and reaction temperature were selected as experimental parameters. It was determined that the dissolution rate of thiourea increased with the increase in solution concentration and temperature. An empirical equation was used in fitting the data. Statistical analysis indicated small errors and the results should be reliable.

  • Objective: Beclin-1 has recently been observed as an essential marker of autophagy in several cancers. However, the prognostic role of Beclin-1 in colorectal neoplasia remains controversial. Our study aimed to evaluate the potential association between Beclin-1 expression and the outcome of colorectal cancer patients. Materials and Methods: All related studies were systematically searched in Pubmed, Embase, Springer and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases (CNKI), and then a meta-analysis was performed to determine the association of Beclin-1 expression with clinical outcomes. Finally, a total of 6 articles were included in our analysis. Results: Our data showed that high Beclin-1 expression in patients with CRC was associated with poor prognosis in terms of tumor distant metastasis (OR=2.090, 95%CI=1.061-4.119, p=0.033) and overall survival (RR=1.422, 95%CI=1.032-1.959, p=0.031). However, we did not found any correlation between Beclin-1 over-expression and tumor differentiation (OR=1.711, 95%CI=0.920-3.183, p=0.090). In addition, there was no evidence of publication bias as suggested by Egger's tests for tumor distant metastasis (p=1.000), differentiation (p=1.000) and OS (p=0.308). Conclusions: Our present meta-analysis indicated that elevated Beclin-1 expression iss associated with tumor metastasis and a poor prognosis in patients with CRC. Beclin-1 might serve as an efficient prognostic indicator in CRC, and could be a new molecular target in CRC therapy.

  • Goose fatty liver is one of the most delicious and popular foods in the world, but there is no reliable genetic marker for the early selection and breeding of geese with good liver-producing potential. In our study, one hundred and twenty-four 78-day-old Landes geese bred in Shunda Landes goose breeding farm, Jiutai, Jilin, China were selected randomly. The fatty livers were sampled each week after overfeeding during a three week period. Polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism and DNA sequencing were used to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of fatty acid synthase (FAS), which is an important enzyme involved in the synthesis of fat under both physiological and pathological conditions. Least-squares correlation was established between these SNPs and fatty liver weight, abdominal fat weight, and intestinal fat weight of the overfed Landes geese, respectively. The results showed that fatty liver weight of geese with EF and FF genotypes (amplified by primer P1) was significantly higher than that of the EE genotype (p<0.05), and liver weight of CD and DD genotypes (amplified by primer P2) was significantly higher than that of the CC genotype (p<0.05). Different genotype combinations showed different liver weights, and from highest to lowest were ABDD, DDEF, DDFF, DDEE, ABEF, ABFF, AADD, and CDEF. Further analysis of DNA sequencing showed that there were two SNPs within the 5' promoter region the FAS gene. The geese of EF and FF genotypes carried a change of T to C, and the geese of CD and DD genotypes carried a change of A to G. The changes of the bases could potentially influence the binding of some transcription factors to this region as to regulate FAS gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of SNPs found within the 5' promoter region of the Landes goose FAS gene, and our data will provide an insight for early selection of geese for liver production.

  • Objective: Eggshells with a uniform color and intensity are important for egg production because many consumers assess the quality of an egg according to the shell color. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of dominant effects on the variations in eggshell color after 32 weeks in a crossbred population. Methods: This study was conducted using 7,878 eggshell records from 2,626 hens. Heritability was estimated using a univariate animal model, which included inbreeding coefficients as a fixed effect and animal additive genetic, dominant genetic, and residuals as random effects. Genetic correlations were obtained using a bivariate animal model. The optimal diagnostic criteria identified in this study were: L🟉 value (lightness) using a dominance model, and a🟉 (redness), and b🟉 (yellowness) value using an additive model. Results: The estimated heritabilities were 0.65 for shell lightness, 0.42 for redness, and 0.60 for yellowness. The dominance heritability was 0.23 for lightness. The estimated genetic correlations were 0.61 between lightness and redness, -0.84 between lightness and yellowness, and -0.39 between redness and yellowness. Conclusion: These results indicate that dominant genetic effects could help to explain the phenotypic variance in eggshell color, especially based on data from blue-shelled chickens. Considering the dominant genetic variation identified for shell color, this variation should be employed to produce blue eggs for commercial purposes using a planned mating system.

  • A mobile Rayleigh Doppler wind LIDAR at an eye-safe wavelength of 355 nm incorporating double-edge technique with triple-channel Fabry-Perot etalon is developed for wind measurement from 5 to 40km. The structure of this LIDAR system is described. An intercomparsion experiment with rawinsonde is made, showing good agreement with expected measurement accuracy. A continuous observation of stratosphere wind field for several days with temporal resolution of 15 min and spatial resolution of 200 m from 5 to 40 km is presented, demonstrating the stability and robustness of the LIDAR. A stratospheric quasi-zero wind layer can be found at around 20 km with a direction change from east to west evident in the continuous observation.

  • Shim Dae-Yoon's ChunChuSaJeonSokJeon presented a new direction of the study about ChunChu in Chosun dynasty. It broke the rigid frame for the study about ChunChu in Chosun dynasty and was an experimental challenge trying to interpret ChunChu based on the view of Post-Neo-Confucian. This study is to identify the nature of the Shim Dae-Yoon's interpretation about ChunChu based on the view of Post-Neo-Confucian and to analyze his analytical methodology. Shim Dae-Yoon's interpretation about ChunChu, first of all, newly identified its nature beyond existing Confucian approach. Second, it attempted to approach to the true nature of ChunChu criticizing existing Confucian interpretation as well as differentiating its interpretation methodology. In this approach, Shim Dae-Yoon highlighted the realistic value of ChunChu focusing on the objectivity as a record instead of the absoluteness as a classical text. His study about ChunChu can be evaluated as a significant role in the intellectual history setting up a Post-Neo-Confucian foundation for the study about ChunChu though it failed to structure a complete theoretical frame.
