The purpose of this study was to analyze the state of the living arrangement plan, the housing plan, and economic plan for elderly's life and contributing factors to their life plan. The sample in this study consisted of 713 middle-aged and aged couple living in Korea. Statistics employed for the analysis were frequencies, means, x2 test, logit analysis and multiple regression. The results could be summarized as follows. The middle-aged and aged couple were planning to live independently in their elderly life. The husband's age, religion, living area, total income, total asset, home owenership had significant effects on the living arrangement of the middle-aged and aged. They had a plan to live in single detached house in their elderly life. And husband's age, educational attaintment, job, and living region were affecting the housing type in their elder life. The middle-aged and aged people had a economic plan that they estimated 970,000 won as living cost in their elderly life. And the factors affecting living costs were husband's educational attaintment, job, and total asset.
This study aimed to analyze the preliminary data to increase the residents' satisfaction of mixed-generation house-sharing. For this purpose, we examined the recognition and demands of different generations and compared the differences. The participants were 50 elderly and 100 young people living in Seoul. The data were analyzed using SPSS statistics. The key findings are outlined below; 1. Most of the young people in our sample got to know about the house-sharing via various routes, but this option was not well known to the elderly. The interest in living in a house-sharing situation was higher among the young people than among the elderly. The reason why people were uninterested in house-sharing was their comfort in living alone. 2. Secure personal-space privacy and the choice of a housemate were regarded as the most important considerations in house-sharing by the young and the elderly, respectively. Young people anticipated a division of housework and the elderly were worried about communication with the younger generation. 3. Expected benefits tended to be higher in economic aspects for the young and in psychological aspects for the elderly. The elderly responded that they would be willing to share the kitchen and living room with the younger generation. Young people demanded necessary living facilities such as a laundry room and a community area with the elderly. The majority of the respondents from both generations said they would be able to solve problems through communication. In conclusion, public relations are needed to increase interest in house-sharing. The elderly and young should understand its purpose and treat each other as family members, not as house owners and tenants. There should be a manager who can coordinate the residents.
This study was conducted to examine elderly users' satisfaction with welfare services and the environments of the senior citizen centers in mid-sized and small cities in Korea. Three hundred and two elderly users were surveyed for this study. Age and gender differences in the level of satisfaction were found. The male elderly users and older users were more satisfied with the education programs than the female and younger users. The elderly people who reside in single-family residences were more satisfied with the educational programs and part-time job opportunities offered at the center than the elderly users who were living in apartment buildings. This could be explained by the fact that dwellers of single housing had more freedom and more room for self-regulation in scheduling their program participation, whereas the apartment building residents had rarely experienced social exchanges with their neighbors. There were significant differences in satisfaction with the environments of the centers by gender, marital status, age, level of education, religion, and housing type. The group differences were explained by the abundance of community activities that are centered around younger and female participants. Based on these findings, it is suggested that more specialized educational and social programs should be developed for the younger users in their early 60s, that co-ed religious activities and hobby programs should be expanded, and that the home-visiting welfare staff should regularly provide the elderly users the information on programs and activities.
This study has been performed to analyze living arrangement in later life. In this study, 276 Koreans aged 60 or more were interviewed for their current household structure. The results are drawn as follows: 1. Of all the households with at least one person aged 60 or more, those living in three generations account for the largest proportion, 39.9 percent. For the regional difference, the rate was slightly higher in urban areas than in rural areas. 2. 48.7% of the subjects living in owned homes were households with elderly only, but only 23% of those living in rented homes are elderly only. Overall, the rate of elderly-only households becomes the highest for those living in owned single structure homes. This result indicates that the elderly with higher economic status are more likely to live without children than others. 3. As for birth order, those who grew up as the first child are most likely to live in elderly-only households, while others are in three generation homes. 4. The elderly with few children are more likely to live independently than those with many children, not because they are without dependable children, but because spend less resource for childbearing and therefore are more independent. 5. Overall in this, it is supported that socioeconomic status and independability are more influential factors on living arrangement of the elderly than regional or emotional factors.

The purpose of this study is to examine demographic characteristics, psychological characteristics and patterns of supportive relationships with their children that affect the successful lives of the elderly. A survey was conducted of 410 people aged between 65 and 85, and 405 samples were used for the analysis. First, the supportive relation between the elderly and their children was categorized into four groups depending on the total amount and direction of support. The four groups consisted of the elderly who exchanged little or no support, those who only received support from their children, those who only gave support, and those who both gave and received support. Second, the more the elderly exchanged support and gave emotional support to their children, the better the chance that the elderly would lead a successful life in later years. Third, subjective health conditions most significantly affected the successful lives of the elderly who exchanged little or no support. The level of education was most significant for the elderly who only received support. The level of housing satisfaction mostly affected the elderly who only gave support. Mutual support primarily affected the elderly who both gave and received. Thus, we should provide health programs for the elderly who exchange little or no support to encourage a healthier lifestyle. In addition, opportunities for continuing education should be provided for the elderly who only receive support to make up any deficiency in education. Because spouses are mostly affected for those elderly who exchange little or no support and the elderly who only receive support, we should provide educational programs about how to be better lifetime companions to each other and also provide medical and in-home care for the remaining spouse even after the other partner is gone. Because housing satisfaction greatly affects the elderly who only give support, improvements in the residential environment are essential. Since the level of mutual support is crucial to the elderly who both give and receive support, programs on the development of human resources are needed for the elderly to interact dynamically and intimately with their children.

With the progress of the aging society into the aged society, the planning of senior housing is inevitably required. Among the factors of planning, color appeals to people's vision which mostly accepts information about the environment, so age-related color vision changes should be studied. The purpose of the study is to find out characteristics of color perception focused on yellow and blue with advancing of the yellowed eye sight in the old age. The findings are as follows. (1) Regardless of gender, losses of color perception in sensitivity is occurred as aging is proceeded. But the rate of reduction is mitigated compared with the ex-research in Japan because of the promotion of physical health. (2) Human lens coloration was not common until 85 years old and the hue of yellow and red was easily perceived by the older subjects. (3) Yellow is more preferred to other colors by the elderly and accuracy of yellow-color perception is higher than that of blue-color. (4) It is especially hard for the elderly to perceive the difference between pure blue and mixture of blue-green. Therefore blue and blue-green should not be adopted simultaneously in senior housing environment. Except for the space which specially requires carefulness, various color preferred by the elderly should be applied to the senior housing environment to satisfy their psychological condition and provide the vitality of life.
This study is to suggest a social welfare policy to overcome the exclusion from the three sectors of economic life, income, labor market, housing, etc., which are the most important items of the welfare of the elderly in the life cycle. The results are as follows. First, income security policies should be comprehensively established and implemented. National institutional guarantees such as national pensions, basic pensions, and national basic living security should be sufficient. Second, housing policy must be reasonably improved. Since housing is a problem for the elderly, policies that suit the taste of the elderly should be effectively established and executed. Third, national and social agreement is needed. Geriatric welfare policies basically require social consensus. In conclusion, measures to overcome the economic exclusion of the elderly should be sought comprehensively in the long-term and various fields. There must also be an explicit agreement from the members of the society. a social welfare policy to overcome from economic exclusion should find ways to overcome the elderly's right to life.

The purpose of this study was to find out the moving motivation of senior cohousing inhabitants in Scandinavian countries, which experienced change of typical nuclear family structure and higher vocational activity rates of women, earlier than East Asian countries. Cohousing schemes were evolved as an alternative housing to reduce housework for working women, and to reduce loneliness of elderly people by promoting active mutual relationship among inhabitants in the community. This paper described why the elderly moved to senior cohousing in Sweden and Denmark. The project was carried out by social survey. 935 postal questionnaires were sent from April to May 2002 to 28 senior cohousing communities throughout Denmark and Sweden. Of those, 536 replies (57.3%) were collected and analyzed by SPSS program. 19 moving motivations were discussed connected with the variables such as characteristics of residents, community-initiative, and dwelling size. As a result ideology of senior cohousing, wanting to be free from housing management and physical attraction of the building could be interpreted as main reasons to make inhabitants move to senior cohousing community. The important variables affecting moving motivation were found out as living situation and community-initiative.
