Towards Conservation of Omani Local Chicken: Phenotypic Characteristics, Management Practices and Performance Traits

  • Characterizing local chicken types and their mostly rural production systems is prerequisite for designing and implementing development and conservation programs. This study evaluated the management practices of small-scale chicken keepers and the phenotypic and production traits of their chickens in Oman, where conservation programs for local livestock breeds have currently started. Free-range scavenging was the dominant production system, and logistic regression analysis showed that socio-economic factors such as training in poultry keeping, household income, income from farming and gender of chicken owners influenced feeding, housing, and health care practices (p<0.05). A large variation in plumage and shank colors, comb types and other phenotypic traits within and between Omani chicken populations were observed. Male and female body weight differed (p<0.05), being $1.3{\pm}0.65$ kg and $1.1{\pm}0.86$ kg respectively. Flock size averaged $22{\pm}7.7$ birds per household with 4.8 hens per cock. Clutch size was $12.3{\pm}2.85$ and annual production $64.5{\pm}2.85$ eggs per hen. Egg hatchability averaged $88{\pm}6.0%$ and annual chicken mortality across all age and sex categories was $16{\pm}1.4%$. The strong involvement of women in chicken keeping makes them key stakeholders in future development and conservation programs, but the latter should be preceded by a comprehensive study of the genetic diversity of the Omani chicken populations.

  • Since 2002, Korea Government has introduced Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design Certification for reducing GHG emission in building area. However, total number of G-SEED Certification is only around 1% of total number of approved apartment buildings despite the various boosting policies. In this situation, most boosting policies and policy improvement researches are leaning toward the supplier's aspect. However, comprehensive relation and dynamics between consumer and supplier has to be considered because housing market is operated by market participants' mutual interaction. Therefore, this research presents system dynamics models based on decision making analysis of consumer and supplier in G-SEED Certification apartment building market. Then, this research evaluate the validity of boosting policies using the model. The proposed analysis can assist government to make next G-SEED Certification boosting policy.

Ecological Risk Assessment based on Watershed System Assimilative Capacity in take Texoma, Texas-Oklahoma, USA (유역시스템 정화력을 고려한 생태위해성평가 사례연구: Lake Texoma Watershed (TX&OK, USA)를 대상으로)

  • Lake Texoma is located on the border of southern Oklahoma and northern Texas. It has 93,000 surface acres, and is a focus of the recreation, and farming industries in the region. There are potential stressors around the Lake Texoma watershed that may cause adverse ecological effects in the lake. System assimilative capacity (SAC) is the ability of abiotic and biotic processes to atteuniate the stressors. SAC Exceeded indicates potential of occuring adverse eco-effects. A number of representative chemical release sites and stressor sources in the surrounding watershed were characterized, and several impact sites having stressors sources, such as being near agriculture, landfills, housing areas, oil production fields and heavy use recreational activity, were selected for surface water, sediment, and groundwater monitoring. A paired reference site, having similar physical characteristics as its impact site, was also chosen based on its proximity to the impact site. Lake water samples were collected at locations identified as marina entrance, gasoline filling station, and boat dock at five marinas selected on Lake Texoma from September 1999 to December 2001. Paired water and sediment samples were also collected. Groundwater samples were collected at about 70 producing monitoring wells. Water quality parameters measured were inorganics (nitrate, nitrite, orthophosphate, ammonia, sulfate, and chloride), dissolved methane, total organic carbon (TOC) (or DOC), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and BTEX, and a suite of metals. Biotic communities were evaluated at impact and reference sites. Five basic components were measured; two terrestirial components (plants and bird comminitires) and three aquatic components (benthic inverbrates, litteral-zone fishes, ecosystem attribures). Potential impacts to these comminites were evaluated.

Estimating Construction Cost for Small-Sized Apartment Unit (소형공동주택의 적정건축비 추정방안 연구)

  • The changed Korean government law associated with the public apartment housing supply, so called the $^{\circ}{\AE}$Apartment Sales Price $Cap^{\circ}{\phi}$, requires new system for estimating construction cost in order to set appropriate price. A model apartment project was carefully designed and its construction cost were analyzed in many different ways. Based on the analyses outcomes, 1,028,000 Won/m2 (excluding cost for underground parking lot) is the most appropriate Price Cap for a smaller than $85{\beta}{\geq}$ apartment unit. Further, it was revealed that the price have to be adjusted reflecting such factors as underground size; structural system; external complex quality; and consumer preferences. Findings from this study will enable the Korean government to realize faster and better application of the related laws. The methodology for obtaining appropriate apartment construction cost will also benefit for future researchers.

  • Recent proliferation of building information modeling (BIM) has actively stimulated integrated utilization of geometric (graphic) and non-geometric (non-graphic) data. Nevertheless, physically and logically, linking and maintaining these two different types of data in an integrated manner requires enormous overhead efforts for practical implementation. In order to address this problem, this paper proposes a concept and structure of the object breakdown structure (OBS) that facilitates advanced BIM implementations in an automated and effective manner. Proposed OBS numbering system has secure rules for organizing graphic objects in full considerations of effectively integrating with non-geometric data (e.g. cost and schedule). It also removes repetitive linking process caused by design changes or modifications. The result of applying this concept to a housing project revealed that only 120 definitions controled over 6,000 graphic objects for full integration with cost and schedule functions.

Infrastructure Health Monitoring and Economic Analysis for Road Asset Management : Focused on Sejong City (도로 자산관리를 위한 상태 모니터링 및 경제성 분석 : 세종시를 중심으로)

  • In this study, a novel method for monitoring road pavements using the Mobile Mapping System (MMS) and a deep learning crack detection system was presented. Furthermore, an optimal maintenance method through economic analysis was presented targeting the pavement section of Sejong City. As a result of monitoring the pavement conditions, it was confirmed that the pavement ratings were good in the order of national highways, municipal roads, and roads of provinces. In addition, economic analysis using the pavement deterioration model showed that micro-surfacing, one of the preventive maintenance methods, is the most economical in terms of maintenance costs and user benefits. The results of this study are expected to be used as fundamental reference for local governments' infrastructure management plans.

Analysis on Limitations of Municipal Architectural Review Procedure for Small and Medium-sized Apartments (중소규모 공동주택의 건축심의 한계점 분석)

  • A single-person-house-holder has been increased since 2000s in South Korea, which led to high demands for small and medium-sized new houses requiring municipal architectural review committee consideration. And it has been argued recently that there are many limitations in the review system. Comprehensive expert surveys and interviews were conducted and the results were analyzed using the AHP to explore limitations in B city. The analysis with the data of 27 survey responds found that 'Related ordinance itself', 'Committee members limitation', and 'Absurdity on administrative procedure' are problematic in order of priority. It is also revealed that architects and administrative officials have different thoughts on the seriousness of those. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data on studies for improving the system.

Development of Deterioration Model for Cracks in Asphalt Pavement Using Deep Learning-Based Road Asset Monitoring System (딥러닝 기반의 도로자산 모니터링 시스템을 활용한 아스팔트 도로포장 균열률 파손모델 개발)

  • In this study, a road pavement crack deterioration model was developed for a pavement road sections of the Sejong-city. Data required for model development were acquired using a deep learning-based road asset monitoring system. Road pavement monitoring was conducted on the same sections in 2021 and 2022. The developed model was analyzed by dividing it into a method for estimating the annual average amount of deterioration and a method based on Bayesian Markov Mixture Hazard model. As a result of the analysis, it was found that an analysis results similar to the crack deterioration model developed based on the data acquired from the Automatic pavement investigation equipmen was derived. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data by local governments to establish road management plans.

Slope Failure Prediction through the Analysis of Surface Ground Deformation on Field Model Experiment (현장모형실험 기반 표층거동분석을 통한 사면붕괴 예측)

  • Recently, one of the natural disasters, landslide is causing huge damage to people and properties. In order to minimize the damage caused by continuous landslide, a scientific management system is needed for technologies related to measurement and monitoring system. This study aims to establish a management system for landslide damage by prediction of slope failure. Ground behavior was predicted by surface ground deformation in case of slope failure, and the change in ground displacement was observed as slope surface. As a result, during the slope failure, the ground deformation has the collapse section, the after collapse precursor section, the acceleration section and the burst acceleration section. In all cases, increase in displacement with time was observed as a slope failure, and it is very important event of measurement and maintenance of risky slope. In the future, it can be used as basic data of slope management standard through continuous research. And it can contribute to reduction of landslide damage and activation of measurement industry.

  • In Korea, the construction industry has been growing quantitatively because of its aggressive advances into overseas construction market and the Korean government's housing policy. Moreover, visions and goals such as 'construction industry promotion build up plan' have recently been promoted by the government while new strategic growth focused on competitiveness is gaining interests among the industry. However, there are a few problems in the construction performance. First, the specific performance measurement indicator or skills for the construction industry are hardly found in Korea. Currently, the finance or overall management system in the construction business are used as indicators to measure performances in not only the construction industry but all industries including the manufacturing industry. The government, the industry and universities recognized the need for the performance measurement indicator and skill and have developed and actively studied on them.
