Graduate School of Public Health, Seoul National University The national health insurance system in Korea is characterized as relatively high out-of-pocket payments, which are the principal source of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE). The objectives of this study are to estimate the incidence of household CHE and to clarify the characteristics that affect the occurrence and recurrence of household CHE using the Seoul Welfare Panel Survey database for 2008 and 2010. Thresholds to estimate CHE were 10% and 20% of the total household income (T/X), and 25% and 40% of the income excluding food share (T/Y). Determinants of the occurrence and recurrence of CHE at the threshold of T/X=10% were analysed using multiple logistic regression models. Out of the 3,665 households that responded in 2008 survey, households with CHE were 12.07% (T/X${\geq}$10%), 5.34% (T/X${\geq}$20%), 6.84% (T/Y${\geq}$25%), and 4.44% (T/Y${\geq}$40%). Risk factors associated with household CHE included living with a spouse, non-Medicaid beneficiary, householder unemployment, low household income, the number of disabled members, poor subjective health, and the number of chronic diseases. A total of 41.78% of households with CHE in 2008 repeatedly experienced CHE in 2010. Risk factors of CHE recurrence included decreased household income and an increase in chronic diseases over the two time periods, the number of members with disability or chronic diseases, and the presence of cancer patients in 2008. Households with lower socioeconomic and health status had a higher financial burden on health care than do their counterpart households. There is a need to enhance society-wide financial protection from health spending among vulnerable citizens in Seoul, particularly, households with low income, disabled members or cancer patients.
This paper attempts to provide a new theoretical approach and an empirical analysis based on it to interrogate the structure of household income inequality and its changes in South Korea in the 2010s. Previous research on inequality in sociology, labor economics and feminism has focused on local inequalities which derive from specific spaces of society. For a comprehensive understanding of social inequality in totality, it requires a discussion of global inequality beyond local inequalities. Thus, a synthetic approach that integrates local inequalities, encompassing class, the labor market, population, and family. By using regression-based inequality decomposition, we decompose the contribution of gender, level of education, employment status, occupation, household composition and wealth to household income inequality. This paper shows that household and wealth, as well as the factors discussed in the previous research, are significant factors affecting household income inequality in South Korea.
The objective of this paper is to construct pseudo-panel data set and estimate price and income elasticities of car travel demand, using 1995-2007 household income and expenditure survey data, in order to provide quantitative information for analyzing related policy effects in the transport sector. We categorized household survey data into 14 cohorts based on the birth year of the household head. As the result, a total of 133 pseudo-panel data sets was created for estimating price and income elasticities of car travel demand. Especially, price and income elasticities of car travel demand were separately estimated both short-term and long-term. We analyzed the panel model considering fixed effect within cohorts, using explanatory variables such as previous year's fuel consumption, real household income after tax, education level of the household head, the number of children under five, and the share of household type averaged by cohorts. As results, the short-term and long-term price elasticities of car travel demand were calculated as 0.2974-0.4280 and 0.4087-0.6275, respectively. Similarly, the short-term and long-term income elasticities were calculated as 0.3364-0.6281 and 0.7098, respectively.
This study was to compare the income and financial assets of the Salary Earner and those of Self-Employed households. The data was drawn from the Korean Household Panel Study(KHPS) that was surveyed by Daewoo in 1995. The major findings were as follows: 1. All households were holding salary/business income, and the average of salary/business income of Salary earner household and Self-employed household were found to be 1,580,000 won and 2.050,000 won respectively. 2. Households were holding saving accounts most in both groups. 3. The yearly financial income, yearly immovable property income, and the yearly annuity income were correlated with yearly subsidiary income. The yearly financial income were correlated with the yearly annuity and yield from bonds. There were negative relationships between the yearly annuity and yield from bonds. The yearly miscellaneous income was correlated with the yearly yield from stock. There were negative relationships between the yield from stock and bonds in Salary-Earner households. 4. The yearly subsidiary income and yield from bonds were correlated with monthly business income. The yearly annuity and yearly total amounts of saving accounts were correlated with yearly subsidy income. The immovable property, the yearly yield from stock and bonds were correlated with the yearly financial income. The yearly yield from stock and bonds were correlated with the immovable property and the yearly annuity income. The yearly misellaneous and total amounts of saving accounts were correlated with the yearly yield from stock and bonds. The Yearly yield from stock was correlated with yield from bonds in Self-Employed households. (Koran J of Human Ecology 2(l) : 1-11, 1999)
This study attemped to analyze the financial stati of single households. The financial stati of single households were analyzed using the income and expense stati, balance sheet status and selected financial ratios as components. The data of 757 single household's from the 1998 Korean Household Panel Study were utilized. The major findings are summarized as follows; 1. Male single households had higher income and expense stati than those of females but lower holdings of other asset with the exception of liquid assets. Single elderly households had the highest holdings of both real assets and debt. 2. Usually single households were retained more short-term than long-term liquid assets. The debt burden ability in using net assets was the lowest of all assets. To accumulate capital those in single household were more likely to have savings than investment assets.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing the life satisfaction of retirees(n=1,919) in one-person and multi-person households using the 2015 wave of the Korean Retirement and Income Study, collected by the National Pension Service. Methods: Frequency analysis and χ2-test were performed to examine the general characteristics and relation between one-person and multi-person household retirees. Logistic analysis was conducted to examine the factors affecting life satisfaction. Results: Public pension income was a statistically significant factor affecting life satisfaction, economic, health, and life in multi-person households. Conclusions: To improve life satisfaction after retirement, selective insurance benefits are needed depending on the type of household. Moreover a policy for expanding labor market participation is needed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the consumption pattern of convenience flood products, and related factors among 229 Chungnam College student in Daejeon, using a written questionnaire. Of the students 31.9% were male, and 68.1% female. The results have been summarized as follows: 1) The averages household income ranged from ₩ 1,500,000 to ₩ 2,070,000 a month. Convenience flood intake of lunch was 46%, and of snacks was 31.4%. The frequency of purchasing convenience floods with a manufacturer s date was 6.09 $\pm$ 1.16, with packing conditions was 5.55 $\pm$ 1.21, with ingredients listed was 5.43 $\pm$ 1.23, and with a price was 5.40 $\pm$ 1.16. 2) In comparing household income by convenience food intake, those with household incomes ranging from ₩ 2,000,000 to ₩ 2,500,000 had a frequency of convenience flood intake of 2 to 3 times per month. When the pocket money level increased, the convenience flood intake increased. This study provides information on convenience flood intake.
Catastrophic healthcare expenditure refers to out-of-pocket spending for healthcare exceeding a certain proportion of a household's income and can lead to subsequent impoverishment. The aim of this study was to investigate the proportion of South Korean households that experienced catastrophic healthcare expenditure between 2006 and 2015 using available data from the Korea Health Panel, National Survey of Tax and Benefit, and Household Income and Expenditure Survey. Frequencies and trend tests were conducted to analyze the proportion of households with catastrophic healthcare expenditure. Subgroup analysis was performed based on income level. The results of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey revealed that around 2.88% of households experienced catastrophic healthcare expenditure in 2015 and that this proportion was highest in the low income group. Results also showed a statistically significant increasing trend in the number of households with catastrophic healthcare expenditure (annual percentage change= 0.92%, p-value < 0.0001). Therefore, the findings infer a need to strengthen public health care financing and to particularly monitor catastrophic healthcare expenditure in the low income group.
This study determined the economic impact of environment-friendly cultivation and the optimal cultivation area of Omija (Korean for Schisandra chinensis Baillon) for full-time farmers by analyzing the management performance of existing Omija cultivators. The study divided the target income into urban household income and Omija farm income, and estimate the optimal cultivation area by substituting the target profit from the cost-volume-profit analysis model. The optimum cultivation area was 1.4 ha for general cultivation, 1.08 ha for organic cultivation, and 1.18 ha for pesticide-free farming cultivation considering the average urban household income as the target, and 0.81 ha for general cultivation, 0.63 ha for organic cultivation, and 0.69 ha for pesticide-free farming, considering the average 2012 farm household income as the target. Therefore, the study reached conclusion that it is necessary to secure the price of Omija farm and stable support for income increase. Therefore, the support plan for income stabilization of Omija farm should be considered. Especially, the central government should provide various policies and financial support to help the optimal cultivation area of Omija Farm.

The proportion of people living in poverty in Soc Trang is comparatively large. 27,154 households in this province are considered to be poor, which represents 8.4 percent of all households. The gap between rural and urban areas, between farmers and other social classes in this province, tends to increase, and the living standard of people in the countryside remains difficult. This paper aims to investigate the determinant factors of poor households' income in rural areas of Soc Trang province, Vietnam. Data from 120 poor households in Vinh Chau district and Ke Sach district of Soc Trang province collected in the year 2019 is employed to test the proposed hypotheses in this study. By applying the descriptive statistical method and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, the results show that the factors of production land, number of income generation activities, access to credit, means of transportation, and means of production positively affect the income per capita of poor household in the study area, whereas household size has a negative impact on the household income per capita. Considering the empirical findings, several solutions and recommendations are proposed to improve the income of poor households in Soc Trang province.
