Microstructure and High-Cycle Fatigue Properties of High-Speed-Extruded Mg-5Bi-3Al Alloy (Mg-5Bi-3Al 마그네슘 고속 압출재의 미세조직과 고주기피로 특성)

  • In this study, the microstructural characteristics of a high-speed-extruded Mg-5Bi-3Al (BA53) alloy and its tensile, compressive, and high-cycle fatigue properties are investigated. The BA53 alloy is successfully extruded at a die-exit speed of 16.6 m/min without any hot cracking using a large-scale extruder for mass production. The homogenized BA53 billet has a large grain size of ~900 ㎛ and it contains fine and coarse Mg3Bi2 particles. The extruded BA53 alloy has a fully recrystallized microstructure with an average grain size of 33.8 ㎛ owing to the occurrence of complete dynamic recrystallization during high-speed extrusion. In addition, the extruded BA53 alloy contains numerous fine lath-type Mg3Bi2 particles, which are formed through static precipitation during air cooling after exiting the extrusion die. The extruded BA53 alloy has a high tensile yield strength of 175.1 MPa and ultimate tensile strength of 244.4 MPa, which are mainly attributed to the relative fine grain size and numerous fine particles. The compressive yield strength (93.4 MPa) of the extruded BA53 alloy is lower than its tensile yield strength, resulting in a tension-compression yield asymmetry of 0.53. High-cycle fatigue test results reveal that the extruded BA53 alloy has a fatigue strength of 110 MPa and fatigue cracks initiate at the surface of fatigue test specimens, indicating that the Mg3Bi2 particles do not act as fatigue crack initiation sites. Furthermore, the extruded BA53 alloy exhibits a higher fatigue ratio of 0.45 than other commercial extruded Mg-Al-Zn-based alloys.

Absorption Enhancer and Polymer (Vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29) by Solid Dispersion Improve Dissolution and Bioavailability of Eprosartan Mesylate

  • The aim of the present study was to improve the solubility and bioavailability of a poorly water-soluble drug in human body, using a solid dispersion technique (hot melt extrusion). The solid dispersion was prepared by cooling the hot melt of the drug in the carrier (Vitamin E TPGS and PVP). The dissolution rate of formulation 1 from a novel formulation prepared by solid dispersion technique was equal to release of formulation 6 (40% of eprosartan mesylate is in contrast to teveten$^{(R)}$) within 60 min (Table 1). The oral bioavailability of new eprosartan mesylate tablet having vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29 was tested on rats and dogs. Of the absorption enhancer and polymer tested, vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29, resulted in the greatest increases of AUC in animals (about 2.5-fold increase in rat and dog). When eprosartan mesylate was mixed with the absorption enhancer and polymer in a ratio of 2.94:2:1, vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29 improved eprosartan mesylate bioavailability significantly compared with the conventional immediate release (IR) tablet Teveten$^{(R)}$ (formulation 7). These results show that solid dispersion using vitamin E TPGS and PVP K29 is a promising approach for developing eprosartan mesylate drug products.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-Ni-Mm-(Cu, Fe) Alloys Hot-Extruded from Gas-Atomized Powders (가스분사 분말로부터 고온 압출된 Al-Ni-Mm-(Cu, Fe)합금들의 미세구조 및 기계적 성질)

  • The effects of Cu and Fe additions on the thermal stability, microstructure and mechanical properties of $Al_{85}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5},\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5}Cu_1,\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Fe_1$ alloys, manufactured by gas atomization, degassing and hot-extrusion were investigated. Gas atomization, with a wide super-cooled liquid region, allowed the alloy powders to exhibit varying microstructure depending primarily on the powder size and composition. Al hotextruded alloys consisted of homogeneously-distributed fine-grained fcc-Al matrix and intermetallic compounds. A substitution of 1 at.% Al by Cu increased the thermal stability of the amorphous phase and produced alloy microstructure with smaller fcc-Al grains. On the other hand, the same substitution of 1 at.% Al by Fe decreased the stability of the amorphous phase and produced larger fcc-Al grains. The formation of intermetallic compounds such as $Al_3Ni,\;Al_{11}Ce_3\;and\;Al_{11}La_3$ was suppressed by the addition of Cu or Fe. Among the three alloys examined, the highest Vickers hardness and compressive strength were obtained for $Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Cu_1$ alloy, and related to the finest fcc-Al grain size attained from increased thermal stability with Cu addition.

  • The n-type $(95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3)$ compound was newly fabricated by gas atomization and hot extrusion, which is considered to be a mass production technique of this alloy. The effect of powder size on thermoelectric properties of 0.04% $SbI_3$ doped $95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3$ alloy were investigated. Seebeck coefficient $({\alpha})$ and Electrical resistivity $(\rho)$ increased with increasing powder size due to the decrease in carrier concentration by oxygen content. With increasing powder size, the compressive strength of $95%Bi_2Te_3-5%Bi_2Se_3$ alloy was increased due to the relative high density. The compound with ${\sim}300\;{\mu}m$ size shows the highest power factor among the four different powder sizes. The rapidly solidified and hot extruded compound using $200[\sim}300{\mu}m$ powder size shows the highest compressive strength.

  • With the increasing demand for light-weight materials to reduce fuel consumption, the automobile industry has extensively studied magnesium alloys which are light weight metals. The intrinsic poor formability and poor ductility at ambient temperature due to the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure and the associated insufficient number of independent slip systems restricts the practical usage of these alloys. Hot working of magnesium alloys using a forging or extrusion enables net-shape manufacturing with enhanced formability and ductility since there are several operative non-basal slip systems in addition to basal slip plane, which increases the workability. In this research, the thermomechanical properties of AZ80 Mg alloy were obtained by compression testing at the various temperatures and strain rates. Optical microscopy and EBSD were used to study the microstructural behavior such as misorientation distribution and dynamic recrystallization. The results were correlated to the hardening and the softening of the alloy. The experimental data in conjunction with a physical explanation provide the optimal conditions for net-shape forging under hot or warm temperatures through control of the grain refinement and the working conditions.

  • In order to effectively improve interfacial adhesion strength between polypropylene (PP) and jute fiber, we particularly incorporated maleic anhydride grafted PP (MAPP) into the matrix through the environment-friendly process without an additional method of process and had better mechanical performances by providing the alignment into the natural fiber than those of the conventional fabrication technology such as an extrusion or injection molding. We also proposed hot pressing method which applied relatively low shear to the composites and confirmed the chemical bonds among the functional groups of MAPP and jute using FT-IR approach. The concentration of MAPP for maximum tensile strength and modulus was optimized at 3 wt%. Flexural properties had no noticeable tendency to increase with MAPP contents compared to tensile strength, which could probably be explained by the degree in wetting of PP/MAPP matrix.

  • Magnesium alloys still have a lot of technical challenges to be solved for more applications. There have been many research activities to enhance formability of magnesium alloys. One is to design new alloy composition having better formability. Also, low formability of wrought alloys can be improved by optimizing the processing variables. In the present study, effect of process variables such as forging temperature and forging speed were investigated to forgeability of three different magnesium alloys such as AZ31, AZ61 and ZK60. To understand the effect of process variables more specifically, both numerical and experimental works have been carried out on the model which contains both upsetting and extrusion geometries. Forgeability of magnesium alloys was found to depend more on the forging speed rather than temperature. Forged sample showed a significant activity of twinning, which was found to be closely related with flow uniformity.

Mechanical Properties of Rapidly Solidified Mg-Zn Base Alloys (급냉응고된 Mg-Zn계 합금의 기계적 성질)

  • Interest in rapid solidification of magnesium alloys stems from the fact that conventional ingot metallurgy alloys exhibit poor strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance. Such properties can be improved by microstructural refinement via rapid solidification processing. Mg-5wt%Zn alloys have been produced as continuous strips by melt overflow technique and the strips were consolidated by hot extrusion. The yield stress, tensile strengh and ductility obtained in asextruded Mg-5wt%Zn alloy were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=152\;MPa$, ${\sigma}_{T.S{\cdot}}=263\;MPa$ and ${\varepsilon}=21.8%$. In order to evaluate the influence of additional elements on mechanical properties, Th and Zr were added in rapidly solidified Mg-5wt%Zn alloy. An 130% increase in yield stress of as-extruded Mg-5wt%Zn-3wt%Th-1wt%Zr alloy was attributed to grain refinement by rapid solidification and elemental addition.

Hot Metal Extru-Bending Process for the Aluminum Curved Tube Product (알루미늄 중공 곡관제품의 열간 압출굽힘가공)

  • The bending phenomenon has been known to be occurred by the different of velocity at the die exit. The difference of velocity at the die exit section can be obtained by the different velocity of billets through the multi-hole container and by the cohesion of billet inside the porthole die chamber. The bending phenomenon can be controlled by the different hole diameter. The experiments using aluminium material for the curved tube product had been done. The results of the experiment show that the curved tube product can be formed by the extru-bending process without the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of the wall of tube and the folding and wrinkling. It is known that the welding and extruding of each billet has done simultaneously although the curved tube is extruded with four billets.

  • Most important for meaningful forging simulation is the determination of correct process parameters. In addition a check and a compensation of the data base after the comparison between experiments and the computation of the developed process is necessary. The existence of a systematic process parameter data bank for special kinds of forming process in combination with forging specific simulation lifts the value of the products. Finite volume method is applied to simulate the hot forging process to investigate the defects for the automobile product. Three typical forging processes have been investigated; Extrusion by hydrolic press, Upsetting by crank press and Inclined upsetting by hammer press. Simulated result has compared with the experiment and provided a direction to improve the process.
