  • Generally, the tire curing process is the process in which the sulfur is added and subsequently the tire is heated to give the tire elasticity. In this process, all kinds of the chemicals in the tire are emitted with a lot of heat. The chemical fume and heat aggravate the work environment. To solve this problem, 92 local exhaust ventilators and 8 gravity ventilators were used, but not satisfactory yet. Preliminary survey showed that the temperatures in the process were very high: 30.3, 32.9 and $37.2^{\circ}C$ at 2, 4 and 6m above the ground level, respectively in the winter (outside temperature was $2^{\circ}C$). It can be imagined that the process is severely hot in the summer time. The higher temperature distribution in the higher space tells us that the hot plume could not be removed with the existing ventilation systems. Therefore, in this study, some alternative ventilation systems were designed. The partitions were used to contain the hot plume to increase the capture efficiency. The gravity ventilators were newly designed to improve the extraction efficiency of hot fume. To satisfy the balance of pressure in the curing process, some supply air system was introduced by renewing the existing air conditioning system. Many alternative solutions were evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics modelling. The best and applicable solution was selected and the existing ventilation system was modified. After implementing the new ventilation system, the hot environment was much improved. The temperature reduction in the curing process was about $6.4^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, the hybrid system combining fuel cell and gas turbine has drawn much attention owing to its high efficiency and ultra low emission. It is now on the verge of world wide development and various system configurations have been proposed. A national project funded by Korean government has also been initiated to develop a pressurized hybrid system. This work aims at presenting design performance analysis for various possible system configurations as an initial step for the system development. Study focuses are given to major design options including the power ratio between gas turbine and fuel cell, reforming method (internal or external), reforming heat source (reforming burner, cathode hot air, fuel cell heat release) and steam supply method for reformer (anode gas recirculation, external steam generator). A wide variation in performance among different configurations has been predicted.

  • A simulation study was conducted to use city-water which is thermally regulated by unused energy as a heat source for urban dwellings. This study utilized multiple heat pump system using the city-water as a heat source and suggested a method of reducing the heat load of hot water supply. The simulation was done to calculate the energy savings at a dwelling for a year. The relation between the controlled temperature of city-water. and electric energy in all seasons was also investigated. Furthermore, it has been found that the controlled water system can lead to considerable energy savings and decrease environmental load such as sensible waste heat which otherwise would form heat islands.

  • Shin-gumho station in Seoul underground subway have been selected to be experimentally investigated and analyzed for the real air supply & exhaust capacity compared to the original capacity of ordinary and emergency condition. The depth of Shin-gumho station is 43.6m which consists of the island-type platform ($8^{th}$ floor in underground) and a two-story lobby (first & second floor in underground). An emergency staircase connects between the platform and the lobby. Hot-wire anemometer, capture hood, wind vane & velocity meter and data acquisition systems are employed to perform the automatic measurement in this experiment. For ordinary case, air supply and exhaust capacity in the lobby were reduced by 34% and 46% compared to the original capacity, respectively. Air supply and exhaust capacity in the platform were reduced by 66% and 38%, respectively. For emergency case, air supply in the lobby was reduced by 42% and air exhaust in the platform was reduced by 28% compared to the original capacity. Therefore, air pollution in the station is expected to be worse in the ordinary environment and smoke control capability in the platform will be weakened in case of fire emergency.

  • In order to save the energy in apartment houses, it is essential that the energy amount consumed in heating per household should be surveyed and analyzed according to heating method, which can be classified into unit, central and district methods. As a basis, we selected the household with nominal area of 32 py. because it accounts for the most percentage in Korea. It is estimated that the gas amount for cooking is 90 ㎥ and the energy amount for hot water supply is 11.41 GJ for a year, which is necessary to calculate the heating energy. Through the survey of actual energy consumption in Seoul and Gyeonggi, the energy amount used in heating can be obtained according to the heating type: 26.02 GJ/year for the unit heating, 28.09 GJ/year for the central heating and 40.61 GJ/year for the district heating.

  • At present, many countries are trying to reduce green gas emissions to mitigate the effects of these gases on climate change. Year after year, there have been efforts to cut energy use for heating and cooling. Heating and cooling systems, common in all forms of housing, are increasing due to the constant supply of new housing resulting from improvements in economic growth and the quality of life. Thus, studies related to the design of cooling and heating systems to improve energy efficiency are expanding. Among the new designs, radiant floor cooling and heating systems which use capillary tubes are becoming viable means of reducing energy use. Radiant floor cooling and heating systems which use capillary tubes are creative and sustainable systems in which cool and hot water is circulated into capillary tube which has small diameter. In this study, the cooling and heating performance of this type of capillary tube system is investigated in an experimental study and a simulation using TRNSYS. The results of the experimental study show that under a peak load, a capillary tube radiant floor cooling system using geothermal energy can achieve desired indoor temperature without an additional heat source. The set room air temperature is maintained while the floor surface temperature, PMV and PPD remain within the comfort range. Also, this system is more economic than a packaged air conditioner system due to its higher COP. The results of the simulation show that the capillary tube radiant floor heating system maintains set temperature more stable than a PB pipe radiant floor heating system due to its lower supply temperature of hot water. In terms of energy consumption, the capillary tube radiant floor heating system is more efficient than the PB pipe radiant floor heating system.

  • Power consumption in Southeast Asia is steadily increasing due to industrialization and the effects of hot and humid climates. However, there are not enough energy generation facilities and infrastructures to meet the growing demand because it is difficult to secure the construction and operation costs of the transmission and distribution systems. This study aims to develop a gas engine driven heat pump system that supplies heating, cooling and electric power to buildings. This system, besides its normal function to produce heat, has the capacity to generate electricity on a household level. This paper investigates similar cases overseas before developing the system. Through the investigation of commercialized similar systems, the level of technology and market trend of development system were identified. Features and specifications of commercial and industrial systems will be used for system development.

  • A small domestic solar water heating system in thermosyphonic flow was tested in Seoul. The system consisted of four flat plate aluminium roll bond type collectors of total effective area $3.28m^2$ and a $280{\iota}$ storage tank. It was tilted $52^{\circ}$ relative to the horizon. And the collector plate, collector tube and storage tank were equiped with 14 thermocouples. As the results, the following facts were found; 1) To provide water at $55^{\circ}C$ for a family of four in Seoul, a collector area of $3-4m^2$ and a storage capacity of $180{\iota}- 200{\iota}$ are suggested. And this system can supply hot water at above $45^{\circ}C$ day about. 2) In the late afternoon hours, it might be advantageous to stop the flow in the system as heat losses to the environment increase unduly. 3) Without any hot water consumption throughout the day, water temperature distributions inside the storage tank was found almost linear. This indicates essentially no mixing inside the storage tank. 4) In case of a small domestic solar water heating system, it is better to employ a single transparent cover rather than double one.
