  • High temperature densification behaviors of alumina powder compacts were investigated under hot pressing and hot isostatic pressing. An alumina part of valve-head shape was fabricated under hot pressing and its forming process was simulated by finite element calculation. an alumina powder compact encapsulated by a stainless steel container was also densified under hot isostatic pressing. Inhomogeneous deformations during hot isostatic pressing due to the canning effect were observed experimentally and predicted by finite element analysis.

  • Pt loaded porous carbon Pt/C electrode was prepared by hot pressing process to enhance the electrode performance in PAFC (phosphoric acid fuel cell). By changing the hot pressing conditions and PTFE contents, Pt/C electrodes were prepared and the electrochemical characteristics of oxygen reduction and unit-cell performance were evaluated. The optimum condition of hot press to make electrode is 360$^{\circ}C$ and 10 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Maximum performance was obtained at 30 wt% PTFE content in the catalyst layer with 80% utilization of platinum clusters. Unit-cell performance of hot pressed Pt/C electrode was 200 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 700 ㎷ and stable performance was maintained more than 200 hr.

  • Densification behavior of titanium alloy powder was investigated under hot pressing at various pressures and temperatures. Experimental date were obtained for densification of titanium alloy powder under an instantaneous loading and subsequent creep deformation during hot pressing. The constitutive models of Fleck et al. and the modified Gurson were employed for thermo-phastic deformation under the instantaneous loading and that f Abouaf and co-workers for creep deformation of titanium alloy powder during hot pressing. By implementing these constitutive equations into a finite element program(ABAQUS), finite element results were compared with experimental data during hot pressing. To investigate the effect of friction between the power and die wall, density distributions of power compacts were measured and compared with finite element calculations. Finite element results from the models of Fleck et al. and the modified Gurson agreed reasonably good with experimental data for densification and density distribution of titanium alloy powder under the instantaneous loading during hot pressing. Finite element results from the model of Abouaf and co-workers, however, somewhat overestimate experimental data for creep deformation of power compacts during hot pressing.

  • Densification of alumina powder, grain size and fracture toughness of sintered body by hot pressing after cold compaction were investigated and compared to traditional hot pressing process (without cold cyclic compaction). To achieve a higher densification and to reduce the hot pressing time, hot pressing after cold cyclic compaction was more efficient compared to traditional hot pressing. This phenomenon resulted from the increment of packing densityby the acceleration fo rearrangement of powders under cold cyclic compaction. The grain size of sintered body was only dependent on relative density, and densification during hot pressing was governed by thelattice diffusion. Comprisons of grain size, densification mechanism and fracture toughness resulted from hot pressing after/without cold cyclic compaction showed that a low cyclic pressure may not effect on the fragmentation of alumina powders.

  • The variation of the microstructures and the mechanical properties with varying vacuum hot pressing temperature and pressure was investigated in PyM processed 20 vol%) SiCw/ 2124Al composites. As increasing the vacuum hot pressing temperature, the aspect ratio of whiskers and density of composites increased due to the softening of 2124Al matrix with the increased amount of liquid phase. The tensile strength of composite increased with increasing vacuum hot pressing temperature up to $570^{\circ}C$ and became saturated above $570^{\circ}C$, To attain the high densification of composites above 99%, the vacuum hot pressing pressure was needed to be above 70 MPa. However, the higher vacuum hot pressing pressure above 70 MPa was not effective to increase the tensile strength due to the reduced aspect ratio of SiC whiskers from damage of whiskers during vacuum hot pressing. A phenomenological equation to predict the tensile strength of $SiC_w$/2124AI composite was proposed as a function including two microstructural parameters, i.e. density of composites and aspect ratio of whiskers. The tensile strength of $SiC_w$/2124AI were found more sensitive to the porosity than other P/M materials due to the higher stress concentration and reduced load transfer efficiency by the pores locating at whisker/matrix interfaces.

  • The prime objective of this research was to study the influence of hot-pressing pressure and matrix-to-reinforcement ratio on the densification of short-carbon-fiber-reinforced, randomly oriented carbon/carbon-composite. Secondary objectives included determination of the physical and mechanical properties of the resulting composite. The 'hybrid carbon-fiber-reinforced mesophase-pitch-derived carbon-matrix' composite was fabricated by hot pressing. During hot pressing, pressure was varied from 5 to 20 MPa, and reinforcement wt% from 30 to 70. Densification of all the compacts was carried at low impregnation pressure with phenolic resin. The effect of the impregnation cycles was determined using measurements of microstructure and density. The results showed that effective densification strongly depended on the hot-pressing pressure and reinforcement wt%. Furthermore, results showed that compacts processed at lower hot-pressing pressure, and at higher reinforcement wt%, gained density gradually during three densification cycles and showed the symptoms of further gains with additional densification cycles. In contrast, samples that were hot-pressed at moderate pressure and at moderate reinforcement wt%, achieved maximum density within three densification cycles. Furthermore, examination of microstructure revealed the formation of cracks in samples processed at lower pressure and with low reinforcement wt%.

  • Densification behaviors of mixed metal powder under high temperature were investigated. Experimental data of mixed copper and tool steel powder with various volume fractions of Cu powder were obtained under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. By mixing the creep potentials of McMeeking and co-workers and of Abouaf and co-workers originally for pure powder, the mixed creep potentials with various volume fractions of Cu powder were employed in the constitutive models. The constitutive equations were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to compare with experimental data for densification of mixed powder under hot isostatic pressing and hot pressing. Finite element calculations by using the creep potentials of Abouaf and co-workers agreed reasonably well with experimental data, however, those by McMeeking and co-workers underestimate experimental data as observed in the case of pure metal powders.

  • The influence of hot pressing on the pore structures of Nafion membranes was investigated by observing the Nafion before and after hot pressing with $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The freezing point depression and chemical shift data of water in the Nafion indicated the presence of two different pore size ranges in Nafion. Hot pressing mainly reduced the sizes and number of the big pores. The reduction of water uptake and proton conductivity after hot pressing was explained by this variation of pore size and number. We demonstrated the potential application of chemical shift data and NMR cryoporometry experiments to measure the relative pore sizes, on a nano scale, and numbers.

  • The behavior of magnesite during hot pressing is studied from 80$0^{\circ}C$ to 110$0^{\circ}C$ by Knoop hardness test, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The growth of magnesia crystallite in magnesite is observed at 110$0^{\circ}C$ and crystallite size is about 2 microns. It is also observed that hot pressing showes enhanced sinterability comparing to ordinary pressure-less sintering. The magnesia body with 95 per cent of theoretical density is obtained by hot pressing at relatively low temperature such as 110$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The objective of this work was to investigate the mechanism of heat transfer in hot-pressing process for MDF manufacturing by reference study. Firstly, general heat transfer theory was studied. The numerical analysis of heat transfer in hot-pressing process was studied on temperature profile, moisture profile, physical properties between moisture and board. The mechanism of heat and moisture transfer inside of board was analyzed by conduction, convection, radiation and diffusion of bound water in wood cell walls. Especially, the change of core temperature as hot press time was important factor to setup hot-pressing schedule in MDF manufacturing.
