  • If rare earth ions could be activated by electrical means after introducing into an appropriate semiconductor host, it might be possible to achieve the electrically-driven optical amplifier. Futhermore, some groups report that rare earth doped semiconductor nanoparticls show the sensitized emission. In this study, we try to prepare the Er/PbS nanoparticles encaupsulated by phenyl modified silica shell via sol-gel process. Er/PbS nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis absorption, XRD, FT-IR and TEM etc. Finally we will present the luminescence properties of Er doped PbS nanoencapsulation.

  • As a series of studios on the suitability as a second intermediate host of Clcnorchis sinensis, the wormicidal effects of mucus from epidermis of Cyprinus carpio nudus were observed. The results obtained were sumlnarized as follows : On the silica gel thin layer chromatography with the greenisll yellow supernatant in acetone: benzene110:90 as carrier, seven spots were observed in iodine chamber. The spot of Rf. 0.225 value among them disclosed the strongest wormicidal effect on the cercaria, the encysted metacercaria, and the adult of C. sinensis. hfeanwhile, no seasonal variations were found in Rf. values and effect of the wormicidal fractions. The wormicidal materials in epidermal mucus of C. carpio nudes and Carassius carassius were compared in their effect, and the former was Inore effective killing substance than the latter. It seemed that C. carpio nodus could not be proper intermediate host of C. sinensis according to results of the present study, in addition to our previous observation results.

  • Application of piezoceramic materials in actuation and sensing of vibration is of current interest. Potential and more popular applications of piezoceramics are probably in the field of active vibration control. However, the objective of this work is to investigate the effect of shunted piezoceramics as passive vibration control devices when bonded to a host structure. Resistive shunting of a piezoceramic bonded to a cantilevered duralumin beam has been investigated. The piezoceramic is connected in parallel to an electrical network comprising of resistors and inductors. The piezoceramic is a capacitor that stores and discharges electrical energy that is transformed from the mechanical motion of the structure to which it is bonded. A resistor across the piezoceramic would be termed as a resistively shunted piezoceramic. Similarly, an inductor across the piezoceramic is termed as a resonantly shunted piezoceramic. In this study, the effect of resistive shunting on the nature of damping enhancement to the host structure has been investigated. Analytical studies are presented along with experimental results.

  • This paper introduces an active sensing node using radio-frequency (RF) telemetry. This device has brought the traditional impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technique to a new paradigm. The RF active sensing node consists of a miniaturized impedance measuring device (AD5933), a microcontroller (ATmega128L), and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (XBee). A macro-fiber composite (MFC) patch interrogates a host structure by using a self-sensing technique of the miniaturized impedance measuring device. All the process including structural interrogation, data acquisition, signal processing, and damage diagnostic is being performed at the sensor location by the microcontroller. The RF transmitter is used to communicate the current status of the host structure. The feasibility of the proposed SHM strategy is verified through an experimental study inspecting loose bolts in a bolt-jointed aluminum structure.

  • As a part of studies of plant tumor induction, this experiment was prepared for the purpose of studying the ability of tumor induction and the tendency of tumor initiation in some Korean plants using the various Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains. Results obtained from this experiment are as follows. The virulences of five strains used in this experiment were gradually decreased in order of strain A6Kl, B6, 11BV7, T37 and 11 BNV6. Especially strain T37 which is known to the host limited strain showed virulent effect to the most of plants given for the materials as well as strain A6Kl, B 6 and 11BV7. Concerning the grade of tumor development, in plants which has tough stem, for example, Glycine max Meer, tumor induction was not well developed after the inoculation of all strains. Particullary in Ricinus communes Linne all strains showed virulent effect but tumor tissues were declined in relation to the development of lignification. It was also confirmed that the induction of tumor tissues on plants is to delay according to the increase of the age of host plants.

  • In an attempt to achieve high rate capability of cell, a new composite cathode was prepared by mixing host compounds with MWCNTs and Super P carbon. Because MWCNTs generally have bundle-type morphologies, it is not easy to get completely separated form. Successful dispersion of divided small bundles between the host particles keeps electrochemical contacts among the particles and plays a significant role in the buffer action as a volume-change absorber. Relative amounts and distributions of the additives are important for design of the electrode for high power application of lithium ion batteries.

  • This paper reports the oxidation mechanism of epitaxial Ni thin films grown on GaN/sapphire(0001) substrates, investigated by real-time x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. At the initial stage of oxidation process, a thin NiO layer with a thickness of ${\sim}50\;{\AA}$ was formed on top of the Ni films. The growth of such NiO layer was saturated and then served as a passive oxide layer for the further oxidation process. For the second oxidation stage, host Ni atoms diffused out to the surfaces of initially formed NiO layer through the defects running vertically to form NiO grains, while the sites that were occupied by host Ni, became voids. The crystallographic properties of resultant NiO films, such as grain size and mosaic distribution, rely highly on the oxidation temperatures.

  • In a Guest-Host cell the orientational ordering of dyes doped into liquid crystals has been investigated. To evaluate the influence of the host liquid crystals on the ordering of the dyes we have measured precisely the ordering parameters of the liquid crystals by using the dichroic ratio of the absorbances for infrared light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the diector. Our experimental results show that the ordering of the dyes can be expressed as a function of not only the molecular structure of the dyes but also the order parameter of the liquid crystals. These functions are dependent on the kinds of the liquid crystals and the dyes. Particularly the combination such as anthraquinone dyes doped into cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals show a very high ordering parameter. This is considered due to a strong intermolecular interaction between the dipoles of both liquid crystals and dyes.

  • A taxonomic study of the fungivorous Korean Endomychidae is presented. Ten species in seven genera belonging to three subfamilies are recognized in Korea. Four species, Endomychus gorhami (Lewis), Eumorphus quadriguttatus pulchripes Gerstaecker, Lycoperdina castaneipennis Gorham, and Mycetina ancoriger Gorham, are newly recorded in Korea. Most species are associated with the fungus-grown bark, and mold contaminated materials. I provide information on host-fungi records of Korean Lycoperdina castaneipennis Gorham.

  • A double layered photoreceptor using phthalocyanine dye was made by dip-coating method. The under cutting layer(UCL) was coated with A1$\_$2/O$\_$3/ or polyamide, and the charge generation layer(CGL) was formed by .tau.-type metal-free phthalocyanine. The oxadiazole was used as a charge transport layer(CTL) and polycarbonate and poly(vinyl butyral) was employed as a host polymer. The .tau.-H$\_$2/Pc had an absorption peak around 780nm, which coincided with the emitting wavelengths of GaAlAs diode lasers. Maximum charge acceptance of CTL that gives thickness of 12.mu.m was -900V by corona charge of -6.0kV. In photo-induced discharge measurements, residual potential was less than -20V and sufficient for ordinary use, and sample films using of poly(vinyl butyral) was showed good charge retention. In printing test, drum that was employed polycarbonate as a host polymer showed the good print quality.
